We recently moved into a new house, and I promised DD that we would redo her bedroom. She is 6 and will be 7 in 5 months. One thing about her room is that she has a new Queen size matress, which I want to keep. We often have family visit from out of town and we do not have a guest bedroom, so I wanted to keep her bed, a larger bed for guests.

Also her room is huge!!! I can easily fit in the queen sized bed, a small loveseat, a children's table and chairs, a bookshelf or two and have plenty of room. So size is not a problem.

I really want to do some kind of theme. I have a friend who will paint murals on her walls for no cost but the paint.

So what kind of room would you do for your daughter that would last until she was at least 11?

I had a girlfriend do a garden theme in her daughter's room at about that age when they built a new house. The mural was based on a large victorian looking birdhouse sitting in the play area with some flowers, birds and vines around the room. It was definitely something that was not too "kid" looking (remember, in a couple years, she'll be a pre-teen) and yet not something that was too adult. Base-color of walls was a really soft seafoam. At this age, you can do a fairy corner (string sheers around a hula hoop, hot glue some silk flowers and hang it from the ceiling) and then take that down later.

I would stay away from the pink/purple wall idea as she'll outgrow it quick.

8 yr DD picked flowers and butterflies when she moved into her new room last yr. The walls are lavendar, and she has lavendar comforter bed sets (bunk beds) that have butterflies and flowers on them in yellow, mint, blue and pink. We haven't finished yet, but she will have a matching border and ceramic butterflies, and white curtains with yellow flowers on them

That was exactly the type of advice that I am looking for. Because right now all she wants is pink. Which I know will change within the year. I want something "girlie" but not "little girl".

I love the garden idea, I will have to talk to my friend who paints murals and see what she can come up with.

Second the be careful with pink

My daughter at 7 is already calling her pottery barn kids stuff too babyish. Maybe some brighter colors instead of the pastels.

I had to redo my son's pottery barn kids room this year too, and he went for a more grown up look.

It is hard for me to believe that they grow up so fast these days!

what about a cali/surfer girl type room? you could do hibiscus flowers and incorporate a lot of pink because she likes it but also have blue and green and other stuff too that she won't grow out of... i don't know just an idea.

FreshTressa - that is exactly what I am worried about. I want to do what she would like, but I don't want to do something that I know in less than a year she will have out grown!

Ashjohnson - I love that idea, and since DH is a surfer he would really love that!

Glad you got some nice ideas. The surfer thing would be really fun and definitely grow with her, but I might shy away from a bunch of hibiscus flowers on the wall...maybe one wall w/a painting of surf coming in and then do the rest just a simple color (maybe SAND) and use the accessories to decorate and pull in the hibiscus flower idea.

The garden room I was talking about was done in almost a "shabby chic" look about it. The girl is now 12 and still likes the room (and she's pretty tomboyish).

I understand where you are coming from though, as I have a just turned six who seemed to have gone from Barbie ballerina on her walls to Hillary Duff posters in no time! LOL

My first suggestion would have been flowers and butterflies. I also like the idea of an Hawaian theme. Of course it also depends a lot on you DD. If she´s into sports, maybe you could use that as a theme. If she does ballet, you could change her room into a ballet studio, with mirrors and a bar to practice at on one wall.
If she likes animals you could go with a jungle theme, or puppies or kittens.

How about painting the walls a pale blue or very muted sage green? The trim could be white. You could then have all pink linens, accesories and curtains. I think those two colors are a nice compliment to pink.

As for the mural...Could your friend paint it on a large canvas? They have the kind that the canvas wraps the edges and you don't need a frame. You could paint the canvas the same color as the wall, then have her do her artwork on top. The canvas will blend in with the color of the wall and when your daughter gets tired of it, it can be saved instead of being painted over.

Check out my DD12 TINK ROOM in my Sig we just finished .I would love to have a real painter and some more room.

Good luck and have some fun.

One of the things I have done with my kids is theme the room with color. I don't have girls, but you'll get the idea. When DS#1 was going to be 3, he moved to a "big boy" room--and the new baby got the nursery.

We painted his walls green, color washed. I picked a green that would be good for a boy or a girl and would span the ages of newborn to adult. We then picked blue for his quilt (no theme) which also has traces of red, tan, green. We put up a blue window treatment.

Then to satisfy his interests, we picked up dinosaur sheets. No one sees them, but him at night (and very cheap to replace when he outgrows dinosaurs) We also picked up a dinosaur lamp (Company Kids, lots of great things there) for his table--easy & cheap to change. Then some small pillows that I put dinosaur pillow shams on--easy & cheap to change. Then I found some "grown up" type of dinosaur posters, nothing cutesy but the type you'd find in a classroom, put them in poster frames (blue) and hung them on the walls--easy & cheap to change. Then on the back of his door, I had an artist friend paint a canvas that goes over the door inside a frame type of thing of a dinosaur.

He has a very dinosaur looking room that should last to the pre-teen years and I have what really amounts to a gender neutral room. All that boy stuff is easy to remove when we decide to move and easy & cheap to replace if & when he outgrows it.

We just re did my 6 y/o dds room in a spin of a garden theme. She too has a rather large bedrrom. We painted the walls a pretty yellow, white trim and some clouds on the ceilings. She has skylights so the clouds look great. I went with blue and white toille accessories and a blue and white check loveseat. Lots of yellows, whites and blues with a little lavender thrown in. Looks beautiful.

Go to a Pottery Barn Kids in about 1 week and they will have a Hawaiian theme quilt and sheets as well as acessessories(sp). :thumbsup2

I had done butterlies in my DD's room when me moved to our house - she was 6 at the time. I actually did do pink - but very pale & I did it combined with white paint & a sponge roller.

We just repainted her room last weekend & she is now 13 1/2 so the butterflies went longer than expected. Believe it or not though, she opted for purple :confused3 Of course, it was that or a bright orange that she wanted & I put the kabosh on the orange!!!!!

She is all about trends so I just got her some of those "car wash" curtains yesterday for her windows. Not my taste, but it's her room & as long as she's happy I figured it's something I can live with.

My DD's room was decorated with butterflies/flowers when she was 6, and now at the age of "almost 12" she is wanting it repainted over springbreak. She is sick of the look - of course, I'm crushed - I love that room.

Her new room will have 1 accent wall of lime green, and the remaining walls will be a medium-ish royal blue. Over the summer, she will be getting new carpeting too (replacing 14 year old pink carpeting) that will also be about the same "medium-ish royal blue" as the walls. Of course, the final carpet color will be determined after the walls are painted.

We stressed to DD that this will need to be her room until she is done with college!
