Ida Rain

Wow we got a lot of rain in NYC. Not much wind but for like 15 minutes as hard as I've seen it. I don't get water often but im a little nervous to look in my basment this morning

This has got to be up there as far as one of the most destructive storms over such a widespread area. To be that strong for that long while moving across half the country is something. So much damage even up through VA and up to NYC and beyond. More than quite a few deaths, so much flooding, tornados in places that don't typically get these kinds of storms. Minor flooding in my area, but just down the road was so much worse. We were predicted to get over 6 inches of rain, ended up being just over 3.

We had four tornadoes in my part of NJ. We had to seek shelter in our basement for a while while they were on the ground, but luckily they passed us by. A town not *too* far away from me, Mullica Hill, was hit by two funnels.

Quite a few people late to work this morning because they're dealing with water in their basements. I got a little in at my house, but little enough that the dehumidifier can handle it.

We got water in our basement. We usually get a bit when we have a hard rain, but last night it was running through our bilco doors and down the access stairs like a water feature. My two cousins are down there now with the shopvac, and we're just grateful that everyone's okay and we didn't sustain any major damage.

Just saw the footage moments ago of massive amounts of water pouring into a NYC subway. Talk about frightening, I imagine there's a number of dangers involved in a subway flood- like those high voltage subway lines.

We need much better threat-prediction tools for tropical systems. The whole system is built around maximum sustained winds, and that is just not a good metric.

For decades, weather professionals have said that water, NOT wind, was the big threat in tropical systems. But they have been talking about storm surge in coastal areas.

Now, just in the last couple of weeks, Grace left 22 dead from flooding in Tennessee, at least 5 that I know of in NC -- and now Ida kills another 22+ in the NE (a toll which will likely rise).

There needs to be a lot of thought given to how we look at tropical systems -- and how we look at them in the days and weeks after landfall.

Not to the extent as in the South, but historic flooding, tornado less than a mile from me, it tore roofs off, things were airborne, trees down, taking electric lines with them, and included one that fell on a house and killed the lady inside the house. Some still without power, as a long list of schools were closed today.. Rain totals varied from 8 to 14 inches. That’s a lot of rain for less than 24 hours for where I live. But a beautiful day today.

I'm about five miles from Mullica Hill. I took a drive around the area yesterday afternoon and saw about four houses mostly destroyed and a dozen or more others with varying amounts of significant damage. Yet homes just across the street were untouched.

Several tree limbs fell in my yard and neighborhood but no real damage.

The Vine Street Expressway in Philly flooded from all the rain. The road is below street level and this part may actually be below river level.

Many times there is more damage and there are more fatalities from the remnants of hurricanes rather than from the initial strike.

We're supposed to get four inches of rain today, and are under a rare tornado watch (I'm in NJ right across the bridge from Philadelphia). We don't usually flood because our house is built on high ground, but I'm keeping notifications on my phone on for the tornado thing.
We must live close to you. Spent about 20 mins in the basement because the cone showing the potential path was close to our town. But we didn't get any damage, did you? No wind damage. No flooding (our house sits at 23' above sea level according to flood plain map)
I can't stop thinking about Mulllica Hill. So so sad. The people who lost their homes but also the farms that suffered severe damage. The daughter (Karlie) of a friend of mine from college married into this dairy-farming family. https://www.agweb.com/weather/everything-gone-new-jerseys-largest-dairy-devastated-hurricane-ida
Many of their 1400 cows (those that survived) were scattered all over and needed to be rounded up so they could be milked! It's one thing to lose material possessions but when living things are your livelihood and they suffer too.... I can't imagine the stress. I literally couldn't sleep Thurs night bc of thinking about them.
There's a Go Fund Me page for the farm. Does anyone know if it's ok to post Go Fund Me links here on the DisBoards?

It didnt flood where I'm at, but the tornado threat was the issue. Western MD got the heaviest of the rain.
