We are going to St Thomas in three weeks.:cool1::cool1::cool1:
My son gets his license on July 9 (we leave the 18th of July)
Indiana mails you the plastic license...until then you get a print out of your license.
They also immediately take your learners permit from you so he won't have a plastic photo ID from the state.

Are we going to have issues with ID when traveling????

THANKS! :)

He shouldn't need an ID since he's under 18. With that said, we live in Indiana and while my oldest son got his license that day (prior to the change), my youngest had his mailed, which arrived within 4-5 days :).

Hoping this is the case BUT when I renewed mine last year it took 3 WEEKS which they never could figure out why! Read the rules that they don't need ID but am just stressing that he will be asked.

We have 6 business days for it to arrive before we leave so I can hope his is one that comes fast !:)

You are wasting your time worrying. He doesn't need any id; he's under 18.

I don't really have much to add, just wanted to comment that I think it's nuts you don't get your real license on the spot!

I always thought Illinois did a lot of things pretty backwards, but we do get our real licenses right there at the DMV.

You won't be down the road. As all states switch over to "Real ID's", you'll have to wait for yours to be mailed eventually.

DD15 got her learner's permit a few weeks ago and we were given the option of the "old" way (receive on the spot) or to get a "Real ID" which will be required in a few years (including for domestic air travel).

the previous posters are right , no ID is needed for a child under 18 years of age. When my daughter was under age 18 we just brought her high school issued photo ID anyway. It made me feel better even if we didn't need it.

You did not state how you are getting to St.Thomas. Are you flying or cruising? This is what I found out about St.Thomas:

As a practical matter, U.S. travelers to St. Thomas need to carry some form of identification, which may or may not include a passport, especially when arriving by air. Carrying a passport to St. Thomas is a good idea for other reasons as well. It gives travelers the flexibility to visit other places near the USVI that are not U.S. territory, such as the British Virgin Islands. Also, travelers returning to the United States via another country need to carry a passport to reenter the United States. So even though a passport is not required for U.S. citizens entering St. Thomas, it's still a good idea to bring one with you.

If you are concerned, why not just bring his birth certificate? You shouldn't need it but it may just give you peace of mind that you have proof that he is under 18. We travel to St John a lot & usually bring the kids birth certificates "just on case". They are young but I always just think its good to have some sort of proof that they are my kids just in case anything ever happened.

Thanks for replies.
We are flying and just staying on St Thomas or St John so not leaving the USVI
I was taking birth certificates as I had read that in a book
We don't have passports....so none of us will have
Will take school ID

We have been doing DL and car titles alot this month and I have been shocked how fast they have been coming. Most have come in less than a week. We are pretty close to where they are processed so I don't know if that makes a difference or not, have a great trip!
