my grandma used to sing this song to all the great-grandkids and i found myself singing it to my 5 yr old ds this morning..........but, i can't remember the words!

i went to the animal fair,
the birds and the bees were there,
the old baboon, by the light of the moon,
was combing his auburn hair.

the monkey, he got drunk,
and sat on the elephants trunk,
????????????

that's all i remember! i'm not even sure that i have this much right, i might have improvised over time!

can anyone help? ds is loving it and wanting to know the rest! he thinks the elephant sneezed, but we're lost!

tia!

the elephant sneezed
and fell on his knees

And what became of the
monk the monk
Oh what became of
the monk.

My mother used to sing that for my nephew and he absolutely loved it. He is 27 now and my mom passed away 3 years ago...how I wish she were here now to sing it.

the monkeyboy, he got drunk,

evidently, grandma took some artistic liberties with the song along the way, lol!!!

MY grandmother used to sing this to me as well. And I sang it to DD when she was a little girl.

Thanks for the memory--it's a great song! I also loved Mairsy Doats.

P.S.--The monkey got drunk in our version too!

I remember Mr. Greenjeans singing it on Captain Kangaroo!

thanks for all the replies and glad to see that others have good memories of the song too! i'll be updating ds when i pick him up from pre-school later today!

btw, feel free to post the words to other childhood songs, my ds is an 'old soul' and love these oldies: 'old time religion', 'drift away', 'lean on me'. i'd love to teach him some less popular ones, not heard on the radio.

Oh my goodness...that song really takes me back...4th grade...we had this very tall, slender, intimidating music teacher who bore a striking physical resemblance to the Wicked Witch of the West (minus the green skin)...she used to make us "talk" that song, to teach us rhythm...I can still hear her pounding out the beat of that song.

This song is big in my family, too! My parents are loving singing it to my 2 ds's now.

My family always did the "the monkey he got drunk & sat on the elephant's trunk". I've cleaned it up, though & sing "The monkey bumped the skunk, and sat on the elephant's trunk"

This is a great site for kids song lyrics:

we always sang a slightly differeng version

I went to the animal fair
the birds and the bees were there
the big baboon by the light of the moon
was combing his auburn hair

what became of the monk
he sat on the elephant's trunk
the elephant sneezed and fell on his knees

but what became of the monk
the monk the monk
