I watched American Idol for the first time...

OK, I admit I've been watching a little AI lately, because John Stevens is from our area and of course, locally, they're making a huge deal about him. The student body at his high school gather at the school on AI nights to watch - so in alot of ways, he's really promoting school spirit, which is nice to see.

I think he has a nice voice and the red hair is definitely a draw, as most young guy singers have settled on brown with blond highlights - it's getting old.

As far as loosening up, I don't know, I kind of admire his laid back style - so very unique in the pop star world these days.

Oh, and if John doesn't make it, I like Jasmine next best.

I have to say, that I have always HATED Willie Nelson's "You Were Always On My Mind" - I cringe when that song comes on. But I thought Fantasia took it and spun it into something very listenable.

Jasimine and George are my favs so far. Can't stand JPL or Fantasia. I like John Stevens alright but he's not a pop star. He'll go a little far just because he's different and he'll have an older fan following.

Gee, am I the only one that likes Diana? I feel she has a much BETTER voice, than ANY of the other girls, Fantasia included! I am hoping she goes ALL the way, as she has talent. As far as Matthew, I like him, but he was doomed from the start in Simon's eyes. Also, "Carrot Top" is good, but way out of league to the other singers. JPL-like his kookiness, but , he will be out soon.

I caught the finger thing. I don't remember it being during a heated exchange - I thought he was talking to a contestant at the time. I took it as an unconcious gesture which he fixed as soon as he realized what finger he had up.

I think Simon is articulate enough to say what he's thinking without resorting to foul gestures. If he wants to be negative he says it. Nothing in his behavior on the shows so far has led me to believe he would purposely do that.

He also did that when he was talking to one of the contestants rather kindly in fact so I'm not convinced that he did it in "that way". It seemed more like an affected way of resting his head but who knows. I suspect that some people are overreacting a little now.

I don't dislike Camilla even though I didn't like last night's performance so I hope that she gets another chance. I hope that Fantasia goes this week.

I am a Jasmine fan, but she didn't do so well last night. However, Latoya London won me over big time I'm not a country fan at all. George Huff seems like the nicest guy in the world, and is a great singer, but I don't feel like he fits the Idol mold

When DD mentioned it I told her I thought is was subconscious. My Dad uses his middle finger when he points at things. My kids always tease him about it but he has always done it. I found it interesting that it was made an issue.

I love John Stevens........ but then again I am an "old lady." LaToya is extremely talented and it's obvious that she has had lots of experience singing on stage. I find Fantasia to be quite crude...... not Idol material. Amy was fantastic last night. She is adorable.

The second time, with the contestant, he noticed what he was doing and changed fingers. Did anyone else notice that but me?

In the UK, people do not give "the finger." Their sign is two fingers. (You can see Spike do it on the opening for Buffy in reruns. They do not show that part of Buffy in the UK, apparently.)
Therefore I do not believe for one instant that Simon was giving anyone "the finger." In fact I think that he changed it the second time because he became aware of what he was doing and was sensitive to cultural differences, and therefore changed his normally unconscious gesture.

I followed the link to that Drudge Report, and it seems like the networks are blowing everything all out of proprtion post-Super Bowl. Do we want our media to be be controlled by the narrowest of minds and their out-of-context knee-jerk reactions?

As I said in a previous post, I admire Simon. He has a lot of fortitude to stand up to all the unwarranted criticism.

I loved Amy last night, I thought she stole the show! I like Diana too. I think La Toya has been consistently good every time though, so I think she should be the A.I. I wasn't surprised that Matt got the boot, but I thought for sure Jennifer Hudson was gone! She has a bad attitude and I don't enjoy her singing at all.

I really like Amy, too. Funny, cause I am not a big fan of pink hair (and the stereotype message it sends), but I find myself liking her more and more each week. Gotta love George and I think LaToya is awesome, too. I don't like Fantasia much, it's like she is lacking class or something, I don't know. Jasmine is a cutey, but maybe too cute....I thought Jennifer or Camille should have gone tonight, but it was poor Matt. Camille better drop the "shy and timid" act or she will be gone next. Confidence is a big part of the show. I love reading everyone else's opinions, it's cool to see what my fellow DisBoarders think about the contestants
