I think the OP was well aware that her daughter was disturbing people! She would have been cued in by the first complaint.

After the show was over an older lady turned around and said, "I hate to say this, but you should have removed her from the show so she wasn't disrupting everyone."

Personally, I would not have sat through the show with my child coughing/wheezing. You mentioned you gave your daughter her inhaler and it wasn't working. At that point, knowing she would cough/wheeze through the entire show, it would have probably been best to take her someplace else (in my opinion). I do think the people were rude to you though and they were out of place talking to you like that. Sorry you had to go through this.

How is this even a question? Obviously the original poster was in the wrong for not taking her coughing child out of a live theatrical performance. It shouldn't take a complaint for a reasonable person to understand that loud, uncontrollable coughing would ruin the show for everybody else. Honestly, I commend the couple that said something. I'm usually too timid to stand up for myself in those situations. I think the original poster was quite inconsiderate. I understand wanting your asthmatic child to stay in a cool, dark, indoor location. A live stage show is not the place. Go find a restaurant or a store or, if it's really bad, go to first aid.

And honestly, I don't believe the original poster's story for a second. She claims that she was "yelled at" by a group of strangers. Since this is the DIS, that means she was spoken to in a calm, polite manner.

Sorry OP - but you were rude and wrong.

I would have gotten a cast member to hustle you out of there after a few minutes.

It was also rude of someone to confront you - but she may have just wanted you to get a clue.

So i'm responding to this one, but i've seen other PP also mention that the OP should have moved her seat and not the older couple. If the older couple didn't mention until the END of the show that they were bothered by her coughing/wheezing then the OP wouldn't have known to move. If they were truly that offended by the OP's daughter then they had two choices say something then or move. Personally if there were other seats available then I would have just moved. If someone nicely/politely said to me "You're child's coughing is disrupting the performance" then I wouldn't hesitate to remove my child. You can't correct a situation by getting nasty about it after it's done.

I'm sorry, but how hard is it to realize that noise during a show is disturbing. Why does it always have to come down to a confrontation rather than politeness and consideration. It would have just been more disturbing to have a conversation about something that should be understood.

The idea that it is in any way appropriate to disturb a theater full of people whether with a crying child or a telephone conversation is incredible to me. I've dealt with sick kids, crying kids, and leaving situations. To broad brush those who think that the op should have had some consideration for others as ignorant, is, well, ignorant.

Seriously, you need someone to tell you that a child coughing/wheezing through an entire live performance is disturbing others, you can't figure that out on your own ?

That is my point. The OP realized her child was making repetitive noise during a show. It doesn't take someone else to point out to the OP that the noise is disruptive. As such, OP has the obligation to move. I believe that is just the polite thing to do.

I'm an asthmatic and my older DD has seasonal asthma I know that cough VERY well, personally I would have left and maybe come back at a later time.

For some families their Disney trips might be a once in a life time trip and I would not want to disturb them, I agree maybe the older couple/crowd went about it the wrong way.

Thanks for the info. Still, she started this thread less than 24 hours ago so I guess she does check the disboards even on vacation. I'm willing to bet she has read every answer (I would if I started a thread) but is MIA because most of the responses are not what she was hoping for.

There is no innocent party in this. I would not have said anything because dwelling on something like that will just ruin my mood and I'm at Disney. However, at the same time you should have taken your daughter out of there so as not to ruin anyone else's mood either. A lesson in common courtesy is prescribed for all.

ok so if I was sitting near the child with my own children, I would have been nervous about the germs the OP's child was spreading (I wouldn't know they had asthma). I would be very worried that the child was contagious and would not want my own children to get sick. I hate confrontation so I probably wouldn't have said a thing, but I would have been very disturbed by it if I were sitting near. I think you should have taken her out immediately.

she isn't talking about a few coughs by a small child that can be ignored!
This was a full blown Asthma attack which is very loud and can't be ignored and would definitely drown out or make it very difficult to hear a show.

Also I don't expect or want to hear crying from a child when I go to a show.

And as far as not standing people, I can't stand parents that think their kids are so precious that the whole world should put up them and never have any consideration for other people. Parent anyway you want as long as it doesn't impact negatively on me.

OP was out of line in staying at a show with a coughing daughter. She should have gone to a restaurant and sat in the cool area, back to room or first aide station.

I honestly think the person did o.k. saying something but IF that person yelled that was out of line. We are only hearing OP's part of story. Imagine you paids $$$$ for your trip to Disney, you take your small child who is excited to see the Nemo show. You wait in line, wait for the show and then some person who is very inconsiderate brings a hacking, coughing child to this show and you can't enjoy. You have no way of knowing this is asthma (but even then the OP should have left and not gone to show). You don't know if this kid is going to make your child or you sick. I certainly would have had no problem in a nice tone saying something how the coughing was very disruptive and suggest going to get something for the child. It ruined the show for people, they were frustrated. I think this might be a case of something being blown way out of proportion but that can't be proven. I think there was nothing wrong with saying something as long as it was in a calm tone.

I think OP was completely selfish and rude. It is like going to a movie and having people talk thru it. How many of you would ask someone to be quiet if they were talking...kind along those lines. Maybe that person who said something should have gone to CM and said something. It was not fair for that person to move. I imagine parks are kind of crowded now with spring breaks going on ...IDK what wait times are now but I'd have been mad like the person who said something.

OP I honestly hope your child is doing better. Asthma is a scary thing (my sister had it as a child and my nephew has now). I think you were very wrong and I don't think person did anything wrong. If you were in their shoes and someone was talking or coughing through a show you probably would have said something.

Anyway don't let it ruin your trip....have fun and enjoy time with daughter!

I expect to hear crying and coughing from kids because yes they are kids, but if either can not be brought under control quickly then I expect the parents to take the child somewhere else.
