As I've mentioned before, I work the front desk/reception area of an entertainment venue. Today, as I'm answering the phone (which rang nonstop all morning because we have a major show tomorrow and a major show also went onsale today) a gentleman comes in. I deal with my calls as quick as I can and ask how I can help him. He tells me he needs to leave a note for the lady over concessions, so he needs a pen and paper, totally normal request.
Well, I only work this position on Fridays, and the lady who normally works it is a little quirky. I can NEVER find anything because she changes the arrangement of stuff everyday. I ask him what size paper he needs, but I have trouble finding a pen. He then starts talking about how horrible my work ethic is because I'm young. I thought it was a joke, so I ignored it. I finally found a pen (turned out to be the only one at the desk because one exploded yesterday and she had to wash all the ones and they were off drying somewhere). He continues berating me for my age and incompetance. I was just so shocked I didn't know what to say.
This was early, and I'd just come back from helping sell tickets to the show that went on sale this morning, so I was still not in "secretary" mode. The lady who covered the desk while I helped sell had turned on the computer. Since I'd hardly been sitting there, I hadn't touched it. Our net was down anyway, so I didn't really need to use it for anything at the time. He told me that I was so stupid for using the computer like all the other young people. I told him I hadn't actually used it, which he followed up with "but you turned it on." I told him I didn't (not sure why I felt I needed to defend myself) and he said "Yeah, but you knew it was on." Of course I did! I'm not an idiot-I can see that a computer screen is on. If I responded to anything he said, he just kept saying, "it's ok, don't defend yourself. I know what you young people are like."
After he left I told my boss, who went after him to tell him what he did wasn't ok, etc. but he was gone. I asked the concessions lady about him and she said this was normal from him. She hasn't been allowing him to work because of this, but from her indications this may have been the last straw for allowing him to work at all. I'm guessing he may be fired.
I just regret that I was so shocked I didn't do something before he left. I do NOT have to take that sort of attitude, especially when I was extremely patient and cooperative towards him.
