Christmas lights… especially the stupid white icicle kind. (hey lady they don't look like icicles, they look like little white lights tied on crooked white strings.) Who took the color out of Christmas? This year, as I drove around my development, it really hit me. Every single house had white icicle lights in the windows and strings of white lights in the bushes and trees. (in the trees might be nice in WDW but Jersey City is no Magic Kingdom.) Not one color light in the whole development. It is just sickening that this could happen in this day and age in such an advanced country. (first corn and now color lights, what's next)

Well I have some news for you; I went out and brought a couple of those old fashioned strings of color lights. (you remember the big bulbs don't you?) The guys over at my local Home Depot, more or less laughed in my face when I asked for them. (they got on the sound system and announced, "Someone is asking for old fashioned color Christmas lights in aisle 5, go check the FOOL out") How humiliating, I left with my scarf covering my face. (I bet all of the white light lovers had white or aluminum fake Christmas trees in the 1950's, no wonder they are so screwed up.)

I was able to find a few strings of color in an old neighborhood hardware store. (the old-timer behind the counter remembered them well) He told me a great story about the twinkle bulbs. (I can't repeat it on the DIS) He put them in a brown bag, and told me to be careful. (I felt like James Bond, no better yet an 18 year-old who just scored a 6pack of beer.)

I proudly put the big old lights in my front windows for ALL to see. Yes the beautiful blues, the gracious greens, the regal reds, and the outrageous oranges. Those are the true colors of Christmas. (young people take note)

My anti-white crusade has not been an easy one. The neighbors are sending around a petition to have me take down my color lights. They said that we are ruining the flow of the neighborhood Christmas theme. (FLOW THIS!) I heard that the association is scheduling a special meeting about my lights. (come and get me, and you thought Waco was bad)

My wife and I can take the abuse but I am very worried about my two young sons. Some neighborhood hooligans started telling them that Santa doesn't go to houses with color Christmas lights. (they came home in tears)

I will let you all know what happens.

By the way what is it at your house WHITE or COLOR?

(don't be afraid to admit your preference, the DIS is a friendly place)

MERRY CRISTMAS!

Though I prefer white lights on house, I would never refuse to look at a house with color lights.

But I don't like when color is mixed with white! Doesn't look good to me at all. Seems like these two should be kept seperate and in their respective corners, if you know what I mean.

COLOR, COLOR, COLOR
Around my porch and on my tree too. My neighbors accross the road have color lights in their windows. ::yes::

:teeth: :teeth: :teeth: :teeth:

I love holiday decorations of all kind!!

White icicle lights :teeth: so guess you better not come over!

I do have colored lights in the windows and on the tree.
I just love Christmas decrations! At least your neighbors put them up.

I have COLOR lights on the outside, white on the tree only because we got a Noble Fir this year, and I thought it would be pretty to kind of wrap each branch with the white lights...usually I am a COLOR gal!

A house down the street has all Yellow and Green lights- Go Ducks! (Univ of Oregon!)

charlie: Either I'm having a major flash of deja vu or something, because I KNOW for a fact that I've read this before! Is this your yearly "I hate white christmas lights" thread??? LOL

LOL! Charlie posts this EVERY YEAR about the white lights!

And I still like the white lights!

But I don't like when color is mixed with white! Doesn't look good to me at all.

You'd think our house looks terrible then!

We "mixed white" icicle light and red bulbs. Red bulbs on top, then the white coming down.

I think it looks very nice. :o :p

I have color lights on my windows, but on my Christmas tree, I do have white lights.

My parents still have those big color bulbs which they proudly display around their door. I like color lights, but those big bulbs have got to go;)

My kids refuse to have a tree without multi-colored lights. I have white lights outside on the shrubs and around the front door. However, since the Christmas after 9/11, I have one big pine tree with red, white, and blue lights. Sorry, Charlie, that one is going to be a tradition at my house.

Classic, Charlie!!!! I still prefer white icicle lights around here! And some day I'll take a pic of a house I know you'll apreciate!

I am still doing the whole red, white, and blue theme.
We still have far too many soldiers away from home so I do it to honor them.

I love it, as always, charlie!

Hee, hee. Charlie, I love this editorial of yours. Thanks for posting it again :)

Not only do I have color, but ALL of my 1600 color lights are programmed to flash, twinkle, chase, slow-go, sequential, fast fade and combine 10 other effects. As a result, there is never a dull moment in my light array. I also maintain the light sets to insure that all the lights are working (i.e. no burned out bulbs). I also have backup bulbs and backup light sets in case of any significant system failure.

We were driving through the neighborhood last night and I found myself nostalgic for those big 70's lights....LOL. Perhaps the trend will shift away from white in a few years.

Oh I'm a big mix--multicolor on the bushes, one tree with a red, white and blue set from 2001 and white icicle lights--plus 6 of the light-up candy canes! You can also see our multicolored tree through the window, although the blue tree in the family room is not visible.
I love color too--there is a street way in the back of our subdivision, a double cul-de-sac no less, where almost all the lights are white and they pride themselves on lighting 144 luminaries the week before Christmas (I know the number because one of the women told me so!). DD#1 and I joke about their street having an extra set of rules banning colored lights.
