Christmas lights. Especially the stupid white icicle kind. (hey lady they don't look like icicles, they look like little white lights tied on crooked white strings.) Who took the color out of Christmas? This year, as I drove around my development, it really hit me. Every single house had white icicle lights in the windows and strings of white lights in the bushes and trees. (in the trees might be nice in WDW but Jersey City is no Magic Kingdom.) Not one color light in the whole development. It is just sickening that this could happen in this day and age in such an advanced country. (first corn and now color lights, what's next)

Well I have some news for you; I went out and brought a couple of those old fashioned strings of color lights. (you remember the big bulbs don't you?) The guys over at my local Home Depot, more or less laughed in my face when I asked for them. (they got on the sound system and announced, "Someone is asking for old fashioned color Christmas lights in aisle 5, go check the FOOL out") How humiliating, I left with my scarf covering my face. (I bet all of the white light lovers had white or aluminum fake Christmas trees in the 1950's, no wonder they are so screwed up.)

I was able to find a few strings in an old neighborhood hardware store. (the old-timer behind the counter remembered them well) He told me a great story about the Twinkle bulbs. (I can't repeat it on the DIS) He put them in a brown bag, and told me to be careful. (I felt like James Bond, no better yet an 18 year-old who just scored a 6pack of beer.)

I proudly put the big old lights in my front windows for ALL to see. Yes the beautiful blues, the gracious greens, the regal reds, and the outrageous oranges. Those are the true colors of Christmas. (young people take note)

My anti-white crusade has not been an easy one. The neighbors are sending around a petition to have me take down my color lights. They said that we are ruining the flow of the neighborhood Christmas theme. (FLOW THIS!) I heard that the association is scheduling a special meeting about my lights. (come and get me, and you thought Waco was bad)

My wife and I can take the abuse but I am very worried about my two young sons. Some neighborhood hooligans started telling them that Santa doesn't go to houses with color Christmas lights. (they came home in tears)

I will let you all know what happens.

By the way what is it at your house WHITE or COLOR?

(don't be afraid to admit your preference, the DIS is a friendly place)

(this is a re-post from last year…and the year before that…and the year before that..) (note to self: I have got to come up with some new stuff)

The outcome of all of this was that I was able to keep my lights and the association “did the right thing” they rewrote the Christmas light regulation. (You gotta fight the power!)

(I think the movie Pleasantville was based on my story…hey I want some compensation!)

I love white lights and I love colored lights. But this year my dad put up purple lights and that is just too strange for me.

Coloured lights with the BIG bulbs here too.
We live out in the country, so only the squirrels throw nuts and try to break them.:p :p

Atta boy, Charlie! I hate white Christmas lights. They're snooty and pretentious and contain no more Christmas spirit than a line of headlights from the opposite direction of a highway. Give me Christmas color!!!

We have white lights on the outside of our house. We started using white when we lived in Las Vegas and missed the snow of New Hampshire. I use color lights every where I can in the house. DH and I have agreed to go light shopping after Christmas and purchase all new ones for next year so maybe we'll go for color and join your campaign.

A lot of our neighbors have put up red and white lights this year (OK University colors) in support of the Rose Bowl bound OU team ;) One brave sole even put up orange lights for OK State University (OSU).

LOL.....I LOVE those old fashioned colored lights....I just wouldn't know where to find them!

HeHeHe! Another classic, Charlie!!! :teeth:

However, I want to officially challenge you to come up with some new Christmas material this year. Don't try to pacify us with the tree falling story, either. We want new stuff!!! :teeth: ;)

BTW, we have big colorful lights. Unfortunately, I can't seem to keep them all lit. They keep tripping breakers and blowing fuses because I have too many strands connected together. But, if I ever manage to get them all lit, I'm sure you would approve! :teeth:

COLOR

I love your classics Charlie, and new ones are always welcome. :teeth:

We have a big mish-mosh of things going on. The tree is covered in colored lights. We have big colored globe lights hung in the kitchen. Outside, we have oneof those colored net lights things on one of the bushes. We have colored around the front window. One of our bushes has white because we didn't realize we bought one box of white and I said no way is that going on my tree!! We will have the icicles at some point whenever DH goes out and puts them up.
I had to laugh though, I watched one of my neighbors hang up those icicle lights and then he went and turned them on. Only two strands lit, and they weren't even two next to each other. DH asked him, "Didn't you check them before you hung them?" And he said "Who the h*** checks their lights before they hang them?!?!" Is it just us? Or do you guys check yours too?

PS- Cute story, my aunt lives in a snobby development too, they get all worked up over that kind of stuff

I love this one Charlie! It always makes me smile when I read it!

I admit, I am a snob! I love white lights and only white lights. I even went out and bought new lights this year for my tree that are all white and if my outside gets decorated it will be done in all white icicle lights.

Thanks again Charlie for the laugh.

Colored lights all the way! And I love to have them blink!

My SIL has told everyone that her house is going to be decorated elegantly...white lights and no tacky decorations outside. Then she points to a picture with a light up snowman and Santa in it...guess what is in my yard?

Yep I'm a tacky, tacky person! I added a lightup spiral tree (colored lights) to the mix this year, I guess I'm trying to out tacky the rest of my neighbors, we all have colored lights!

DH calls houses with white lights and white Christmas trees in the window "sterile" and thinks they are just not Christmas-y. I have to listen to this rant every year.

While I "sort of" agree with him, and prefer bright colorful lights on both tree and outside, I think white lights have a more FORMAL look, which is nice too.

However, I totally agree with you about the icicle lights. They do NOT look like icicles. 2/3rds of the time they don't hang straight down and just look like crooked strings of verticle lights (i.e., a mess). The only good thing about them is that more people decorate the outside of their houses since they came out.

You know it is Christmas when Charlie starts pulling out the classics!!

Waiting for the ornament one now...... ;)

We're showing our support for The Great Multi-Color Light Crusade in Monmouth County, Charlie! ;) BTW, we HAD those BIG multi-color lights until we moved a few years ago...I can't decorate outside this year, but we have the inside windows decorated w/ our Multi-Color Christmas Spirit. :teeth:

Actually, I sometimes like white lights too, but it depends on how they're used. I like more color than just all white lights. And I'm not partial to the "icicle" lights either.

(P.S. I must've missed this thread in previous years...it was fun finding it! :) )

SAFE & HAPPY HOLIDAYS TO ALL! :)
