I want one resort, husband wants another

Split stays are too difficult with the dining plan & cost you more.
I never ask a question that I might not like the answer to-lol ;)
I would go with the mod for $200 more.
Make it up to him another way..

Both DH and I are Pooh-sized and cannot sleep in a double bed so we have not stayed at a value. Having said that, I would love to stay at a Value because of the theming. I have read plenty of TR's where people return time and time again to Pop because they love it so much. I think kids would be much happier at Pop. I agree that a split stay would be too much for a 6 day vacation and a hassle with the dining plan. You can buy quite a few souveniers with $200! Since it is your first trip, there will be others so next time you can stay at a different resort.

I live that you said that you guys are "Pooh sized"
Too cute!

I would let hubby win with the resort. While I prefer POFQ, I don't mind the Values... Little ones seem to love them too. Plus from POP you could go explore the new Art of Animation resort! I wanted to stay at Pop for our next trip but with DD1, DD2, DH, my mom and I, we could use that extra space. If it were just our little family we would go value and use the extra money for special experiences or souvenirs.

I would price out how much it would cost to go to Universal for a day or two. I know the numbers helped us decide to do only one day at Seaworld! No way we were going to spend so much money for Universal when we had little ones a pregnant women and older folks who don't like rides that move too much! It's all about compromise isn't it? I think it is crucial to plan together. What are your must dos, your children's must dos and your husband's must dos? If we are a group, we all pick one or two. I plan the rest :).

You make a good point. It is all about compromise. I priced out the cost of Universal, and it's just going to be too much extra money, once I add the price of the tickets and food for the day. Right now DH is telling me what would make him happiest is if I would just make up my mind and pick something! :rotfl: He said he doesn't care, just pick something. I know he really likes Pop, and if it weren't for the double beds I think I'd be all for it for the entire trip. We do sleep okay in our double bed at home, but for some reason the double bed at my mom's house seems to be smaller than our bed, so we don't sleep as well (we're both a little pooh sized too. :) ) As much as I don't want to do a split stay, I think doing 2 nights at Pop would be good to get the experience, and 5 or 6 nights at POFQ would be good for the nicer resort and the queen beds. Or maybe I'll just suck it up and do Pop for the full stay. I probably will drop Universal though - maybe Legoland because it's a little cheaper. But first I need to talk to my mom, because she claims she still has these free passes to Universal that never expire, that we got when we went to Universal about 20 years ago! She claims she knows where they are, I don't really believe her, but if I tell her we're planning to go, she'll look for them. If she does find them, I will fall out of my chair, lol.

Did you ask him which ROOM he likes better? I wouldn't pick a resort based on the outside...I personally choose based on the rooms themselves. Does he like the rooms at Pop? What about POFQ?

If you would have to share a double bed, that would probably be a deal breaker for me, but if you get your own double bed & he gets his own...that's even better. LOL A $200 price difference isn't huge between the two resorts so either way I'm sure you'll both be happy. You can maybe stay at Pop and splurge on an extra special meal, or stay at POFQ. What about doing an upgraded room at Pop...do they have King bed options or anything? I'm not very familiar with the values. If you don't mind moving mid-week you can choose to do a split-stay instead. I'd have a hard time doing a split-stay, but a lot of people love it. I like to just have a "home" and stay put for the week!

We had stayed at Pop a couple of times and liked it. Your kids are young and they would like it...they do fun things with the kids by the pool and movies at night. The mods have water slides so if your kids can't swim they would be a tease as they can not go down with you and you can not stand at the bottom. At least that is the official policy. Universal is really geared towards older kids so save that for another year. Don't waste your time on a split stay. I don't know why people make such a big deal about queen beds...it is only 6" wider than a double! Believe me you will have a wonderful time no matter where you stay. Personally I'd like the extra money for souvenirs. We are staying at pofq this year because we are 4 adults and the grandkids are 13 & 5 but our last 5 trips have been in the values and we liked them all.

I had a similar situation in 2011. I wanted POFQ but my daughters wanted Pop Century. My husband didn't have a strong opinion either way. We ended up at Pop. Our room was clean, we had a great mousekeeper and the grounds had a nice theme for the kids but I wasn't thrilled about the room size or with how basic the room felt. This year we are staying at POR in a Royal Guest Room. Only 9 more days until we are there!

Well, DH just keeps making everything more complicated. I talked to him earlier about possibly doing POFQ and he said that whatever "we" wanted to do (meaning me and my girls) was fine. Because he had already given up going to Legoland, already given up going to Islands of Adventure, it really didn't matter if he lost out on the resort he wanted too. Good grief, and I'M supposed to be the emotional one? So I told him I'd "see what I could do" to try to add Universal in the mix for him, without totally blowing our budget.

So one idea I had was doing Saturday and Sunday night at a hotel near Universal with a package, and 5 nights at Disney with a package, but I wasn't feeling that because I'd have to make it over to Disney really quickly on Monday to get tickets and possibly make an early ADR. So then I thought maybe to make us all happy, we could do 2 nights at Pop room only then 5 nights at POFQ with a package. The last option is just to add another day to a POP or POFQ package and do Universal one of those days. I think the 3rd will be the most expensive option, but I'll have to price it out. Or the last option is just to let us stay at Pop for 6 nights and tell DH we can go back to Orlando next year for Universal!

Goodness, the whole point of taking this trip was because I figured it would be cheaper than our original plan of taking the girls on a 7 day cruise. At first it looked like we'd save about $1000 going to Disney instead, now that savings is dwindling down to about $500. I just hope this AAA person is patient with me while I figure all of this out.

I think it is very important to let your hubby win on something. You said in one of your earlier posts that you were trying to get his input on things and that it is hard to do. Well, he gave you his input, what message does it send to him if he finally tells you what he wants and you ignore it? If he wants to stay at Pop, stay at Pop. Tell him he is right, you got to pick the destination, he should get to pick the resort. Resist the urge to say, "I told you so" if he complains about being in full sized beds for 6 days. Under no circumstances complain about the resort and then do the suffering wife routine where you think you are being subtle about any problems being his fault. ;)

Seriously, (not saying you do this, just that I see women do it all the time so please read this as a general thing) why would a man continue to offer his opinion if his opinion always gets ignored?

Signed,
Very happily married for 15 years to a husband who still thinks I rock. :)

PS, if you could swing the Universal thing and then the Disney thing I would do it if it is that important to him. Don't worry about having to get somewhere early for an ADR, that is why cabs exist. Plus, no food in Disney is so phenomenal that missing it would be the end of the world. I'm sure there are great restaurants where you live too.

Edited to add: Saw your later post about the cost of Universal and your sleeping arrangements at home. U does add a lot on to the price, so if you are going to skip it I think it is even more important to let him have the resort. Legoland is about 45 minutes away so make sure it is worth the extra traveling time. If you are used to full sized beds that changes a lot. I'm used to a King and going to a full would make me nuts. That extra 6 inches of width and 5 inches of length you get from a Queen is make or break for me.

I want to thank all of you who have read and responded to my insanity of trying to decide on where to stay for our first Disney trip. Now that we have finally decided to stay onsite (yay!) and do a package, my last dilemma is choosing whether or not to stay at Pop Century or POFQ. I showed my husband pictures of both last night, and he fell in love with Pop because of the huge big wheel. :) But the more I was going over the pros and cons of each resort with him, I was really feeling POFQ more. It's not as over the top fun looking, but I like the idea of queen beds, a boat ride to DTD, a coffee maker, and I like their food court menu so much better than Pop's new menu. I figure, if we're going to spending most of our days in the parks, do we really need to come home to a resort that looks so busy and lively too? I also found a lot of fun activities that go on at POR that we could participate in too. But we will have our 5 and 6 year old girls with us, and I think they would get a kick out of the themes at Pop. And POFQ is $200 more for 6 nights. I just don't know if I want the double bed and the smaller room of Pop, for my own comfort, which sounds a bit selfish.

I know at the end of the day DH will let me choose what I want, but I don't know if I would feel bad for going against his wants, when I tried so hard to get him to actually give me an opinion on something. I don't know if I should try to convince him of the benefits of POFQ or just give in to his desire to stay at Pop. I really would love to stay in one of the Royal rooms at POR, because I know my girls would love that, but I'll have to wait and see how good of a discount AAA could give me because rack rate prices are a bit out of my budget. Anyone dealt with this before and how did you handle it? Or any insight into which resort you would choose and why?

Not even a decision for me...POFQ. The girls will love the pool theming and all the decorations in the food court. The resort has a smaller footprint so easy to get around without a lot of walking and the boat to DTD is a great way to relax and enjoy the scenery. As you stated, the queen beds and additional space make the room more enjoyable when there. The values are too small for us, but we did like the theming.

We just got back from POR royal room a week ago. It's a nice room and DD loved the theming. Our next stay looks like back to POFQ, it is still our favorite mod resort.

POR has an entire building that is further away from the main lodge than anything at Pop Century, so you need to be careful.... stay there and you can feel very isolated. It's what I don't like about the mods.

After asking for his opinion, I would happily stay at Pop! Both resorts are nice in their own way. plan a return trip for POFQ later.

Otherwise, why ask for his opinion? If you go where you want and he is unhappy, will you have a better vacation? If you go to Pop, you will have a happy hubby who will be more inclined to help you plan again in future.

Jmo, of course!

While I would prefer a Mod over Pop, I have to agree that it's good to let your husband have some aspect of the vacation that he gets "his way." Pop is fun and the food court is decent. After our last stay there, though, my husband said "No more Values," and we were just there for 3 nights.

If I could give you some info about Legoland, let me just say that unless he is a Lego FANATIC, it may not be all that he hopes it will be. The "Miniland" area is very cool with all the mini recreations of landmarks and such. The attractions there, though, are very young-child-oriented. When we went, my then-6-yr-old loved it while my then-9-yr-old thought it was "lame." The rides are very short in duration and tame. The theming is good, but IMO, I wouldn't spend the extra money on it when an extra day at a Disney park is $10 per person.

You poor thing, this has been so stressful for you :grouphug:

I am going to say for your DH and kids stay at POP. It's not a crazy loud resort. I am going next week (trip 10 to POP) with a request for a lakeview room in the 50's. I never even see other people on that side and I walk out to look at a peaceful lake. And we can see fireworks from there. We practically have bowling pin pool to ourselves. The food court and buses are good, and now we can walk across the bridge and eat at AoA which is great and your kids will love walking around both resorts. Picture opps galore for you at both resorts. They will love it and you will love that they love it! It will be a totally Disney trip!

POFQ is only mod I haven't stayed at so far. I walked all around it last fall and I loved the feel - but I love New Orleans and I think they did a great job. It's really classic NOLA, dark colors, wrought iron but other than the dragon pool area, it's not very kid like. We did visit there with our kids when smaller and we would stay at POR and they never wanted to stay there. I think it's a very mature setting. I think I would love it now without my kids but not when younger, other than pool. It's just not the immersion I want. The food court is just okay (I did eat there last year) - I think lots of folks walk over to eat at POR which is great. The boat to DTD is great but a ride or two, or better yet - thunder/lightning which gets you dropped off at next resort whether yours or not (happened), wears off.

Now if you can hit on a great rate for a POR Royal Room - grab it. Stayed last year and fell in love with it (and we are all adults). It is pretty awesome!

I think you hit the nail on the head. The reality is that though I "want" to stay at POFQ, what I "should" do is value my husband's opinion and stay at Pop. It won't kill us, I'm sure we'll have a good time there with our girls, and we may not be at the resort much anyhow. I will try my best not to do an "I told you so" if the beds end up being too uncomfortable. ;). I liked someone's idea of staying at POFQ and visiting Pop, and it made me think, we could just as easily stay at Pop and visit POFQ. I would much rather go to lunch or dinner over there anyhow, so it would make more sense to visit POFQ. And if I really like it, and we like staying onsite, then maybe that can be for a next trip. :)

Remind him of the old saying "when Mama's happy, everybody's happy"! ;)

How did you get only $200 difference for 6 nights? The difference in price is about $90 a night:confused3

With two kids in the same room, I would try to convince DH to go to FQ. More space, bigger beds, and the curtain between the sinks and bedroom area really helps with modesty issues when everyone is trying to get dressed.

Splitting between two resorts would work, but it is kind of a pain to pack up in the middle of your vacation.

I got my quotes through AAA, and I have no idea if one resort is more discounted than the other. I was also comparing a Pop preferred room to a POFQ standard room. The exact difference in the prices I was quoted, including 4 day tickets and the dining plan, was $215 for the 6 nights. I assume the preferred vs. standard and difference in AAA discounting may have had something to do with it.

ETA: I am also looking at a late June stay for next year, don't know if that makes a difference either.

I plan all of our Disney trips now and can't get my wife involved in the planning no matter how hard I try. We have done Pop three times and I love it but I would jump at POFQ for $200 more just for the Queen beds. On the other hand, I get how your husband feels, even though I would chose differently. If you don't let him pick the resort at least, I suspect he is going to feel like it's not really "his" vacation at all. Plus, you will save money at Pop!!!

FYI, I would not split the stay. Pain in the rump IMHO!

Remind him of the old saying "when Mama's happy, everybody's happy"! ;)
