I touched something on Space Mountain

A friend INSISTS her son touched the ceiling in the launch tunnel and he was shocked/zapped by electricity.

Ya, I don't see that happening.

Like stated before, I highly doubt you could touch "anything" while on SM.

I remember riding SM with my dad when I was a kid - he's 6' and I always rode behind him. I figured if something was low enough to hit it would get him and not me!

Yeah... of course you touched something! They built the ride so you never know if you'll hit the track above you with your hand or head. Surprise, you lost a hand! Surprise, you're decapitated! ;)

"Keep your hands inside the ride vehicle" obviously means don't reach over the sides. Roller coasters are designed to throw ya hands in the aya.:thumbsup2
:lmao::lmao::lmao::lmao::lmao:surpise you lost a hand:lmao::lmao::lmao::lmao:

I have only rode space mountain one time, but that was enough for me, I don't like the car restraint bar, for the only thing keeping me in, I need a shoulder harness, and a seat belt tight, so I don't feel like I'm going to be thrown out at any second. It feels like i'm was traveling 90 MPH,:scared1:

I'm 6'4 and try holding my arms up high. Only manage it for a few seconds though, then I end up ducking down as low as I can in fear I'm gonna hit something. I have never ever touched anything whilst riding though, so as Robo says, it was probably a web, or a bug maybe.

It was something solid, not a cobweb or bug. I just barely brushed the last 1/8 inch or so of the longest finger on my right hand, just a quick touch, but it was my finger that was moved out of the way, not the thing that it touched. Kinda dumb reaching up like that, but I should have realized from the low ceilings on the ride that the 1970s were not exactly a time of complete idiotproofing like today.

I can easily touch the ceiling of the tunnels at the beginning and I think also at the end of the ride. I tried this long ago, out of sheer surprise that they would build a ride where you can touch anything. Maybe the "zap" was static electricity, was it by any chance on a cool, dry day? Maybe static can build up on the wheels/frames of the cars.

Oh I am sure he touched the ceiling. I certainly can and have in that launch tunnel and I'm only 5'7". I just doubt he was shocked. His mom claims that the kid's hand was numb for the rest of the day too. She's been known to exaggerate.

I have never thought of being able to touch something. You can bet when I go on it next week that is exactly what I'll be thinking the whole time now!!:lmao:

I can easily touch the ceiling in the launch tunnel as well. That being said, in the darkness part, I can only keep them up for a second or 2 because of my fear of whacking something!!! Btw I am 6'2''

My son is 6'6" and he says there are parts of SM that make him hunch over..says he feels like there is something close to his head. I asked the CM if there is a height that is too tall they said no. I definitely do not want his arms up after watching the lights on video.

Hey I think that was me you talked to! Although I don't technically work at Space Mtn. I'm in the gift shop, but I was standing at the end of the ride writing down photo numbers for guests getting off the ride. I have no firsthand mechanical knowledge but I can't imagine Disney having a ride where there is any possibility of someone getting hurt, so I wasn't doubting your word, just trying to reassure you.
Actually, a few weeks ago they had a day where CMs could come in early before the park opened and ride Space with the lights on. Unfortunately I wasn't able to do it but I wish I had - then I would've known for sure!
