I have a Dec use year and we usually borrow a year and go in December every other year so it works well for us. 07 is the year we are supposed to go back but in the Fall of 07 we are going back to hawaii so we were going to go to Disney in the Spring of 07 instead. I though I was getting my 06 points in Dec and then would borrow 07 so we had enough for 2BR for 9 nights. I just called today and realized we had already borrowed most of 06 and only have enough for 4 days if we go in the spring of 07. And they told me I could have already booked my rooms! (I thought I had to actually wait until Dec to book)

So now I am 7 points short of being able to go for ONLY 5 days (we usually go for 9) Dont know if I should just not go in 07 and bank those until 08 - (but then agian I dont think I can wait that long.)

Guess I dont really know why I am posting, but maybe just to ask - how long did it take you to be able to figure this all out (banking/borrowing/booking dates) And what would you do, go for 4 or 5 days in March 07 or hold out for 9 days in Dec 08?

thanks

Your use year has nothing to do with WHEN you book. Only your check out date determins when you can book.....It is 11 months from the check out date for your home resort and 7 months from your check out date for a non-home resort. December is just when you get points added to the account. You are currently in your 2005 use year, and will have 2006 points coming for stays that occur between Dec.1, 2006 and Nov. 30 2007.

You can book a ressie 11 months out, so at your home resort, you could have booked a March '07 ressie as early as April '06, figuring out 11 months from the dates that you are checking out. You do not have to have the points in possession at the time you book, but the points would have to be available for the ressie. So for that March '07, you could have used points that were banked from '05 into '06, points from December '06 or points you would have borrowed from your December '07 allotment.

If I were you, I would go on the DVC site and look at where you did use the points, and probably I would try to be on the phone with a person at MS who can help you talk through the process.

March points are probably more expensive than December points unless you're going in the holiday season, so that may be some of the problem.

you can always go on the DVC rent/trade board and get another member to transfer you 7 points

Banking/Borrowing is probably the single most confusing component of DVC membership for many members - and having a December Use Year seems to often compound that even more.

For most, points from a December 2006 Use Year will be used in 2007 and points from December 2007 would need to be borrowed to have additional points to use. If you won't have enough points even with borrowing you could cerainly see if you could find someone to transfer the needed points into your account ... but it almost sounds as though you should even consider an add-on! :smooth:

(I'd take the March 07 trip, purchase an add-on and then do 9 nites in December 09 ! ;) )

Good luck with your decision! :)

how can you transfer points to someone else. I booked my trip for March and I think I have 9 pts left over that I can't use. Let me know how to transfer them I would rather give them to someone then just let them waste

You may transfer once - either in or out of your account - per Use Year. It just takes a call to MS and they will handle the details.

It does take a while to get used to the December UY calendar, where you don't get the current year's points until the last month of the year.

The thing that caught me by surprise is the fact that once you bank points into a future UY, you can't borrow them back. Somehow, that detail slipped past me until I got (slightly) burned by it last year.

thanks for the support guys - and Disneynut71 - if your looking for someone to donate your extra points to - I'm willing to take them off your hands! :thumbsup2
