I think we may be being taken for a ride

But my question is this...why should she have to ? Why aren't some owners taking a more proactive stance with their renters and keeping up on communication and not putting people through stress ? What about the people that rent from some of these owners and don't have access to Jan or the DIS ? I, respectfully, have issues with it. If I rented or referred someone to, it would be through a trustworthy owner here on DIS. But then again, I have that advantage. A potential renter shouldn't have to have someone else track down the the owner if you can understand where I'm coming from. There shouldn't be the stress and uncertainty less than a week before a trip ? Like I said, often I go down to FL to visit relatives. The OP just heard from the owner yesterday ? What if she had already left ?

True Pat, I agree....renting from people u don't know can be tricky. But I think there's a tad bit more security with a DVC owner. I'm sure DVC MS could help u track the owner if there was an issue. You can call the resort and at least confirm there is a reservation ? And you wouldn't have to worry about getting lock codes and the OP said she didn't even know the home address for her rental a mere 5 days before arrival. At least with DVC you know where to go and there is somewhat more of a leg to stand on vs someone in another country who can't be traced or located ? Honestly, this is just my humble opinion. Renting period is a leap of faith, but I think, with home owners it's even more of a leap especially if they have no references. There are some fine, upstanding people on the DIS who are not included in this of course, such as Jan. :)
 
Isn't paying last week and going Saturday a bit late to be paying final balance. As deposit was made a long time ago it is not a last minuite booking so balance surely should have been paid earlier. Owners usually require balance 8 weeks before staying in my experience. Maybe this has something to do with not getting the keycode until the payment had cleared the bank.

I know my latest owner is happy to give me the full address now but I would not expect the keycode to their property until full cleared payment had been received.

But how about a little communication with the renter ? An address ?
The OP stated :

We made our final payment last week. We still have not heard from the owner despite many emails to him asking for confimation that the money has arrived. I'm assuming the date of the final payment was an agreed upon contract between renter and rentee unless details are missing.

If the owner was simply waiting for the final payment to clear, why not at least let the renter know that ? The OP said they left "many" emails for the renter......a response/acknowledgement would have been nice.


If that had been the case, I doubt this whole thread would have been started. Sorry.....unless certain details have been left out (and this is possible), I side and sympathize with the renter in this situation if all facts are stated.
