I think my puppy swallowed cellophane.

your pup is beautiful. I have a Cavalier as well, a tricolor. I let her tear up soda bottles, plastic cups, etc. all the time. I had no idea :scared1: that it could be expecially harmful. She is my first puppy. I'm still learning.

Glad to hear that things are "moving along". Let us know how he is doing.

you have to watch whether they are a chewer or a swallower.
then you have to keep watching to see if they change as they grow up.

Q is a chewer, Fred eats things.

I hope Brian is doing well.

We had a dalmation that used to chew EVERYTHING! She ate a loaf of bread once, plastic wrap and all. She also liked tinsel off the Christmas tree and once her and the cat got a roast off the kitchen counter and had a little feast. Squirt lived to a ripe old age of 16.

Our newest addition, Piper a Jack Russell, also likes to chew everything. We buy lots of Nylabones, the ones for powerful chewers. When she feels we aren't paying enough attention to her she will also eat socks or empty water bottles. It's like a game to her when we chase her around trying to get it back.

FYI, onions, grapes and raisins are all bad for dogs as well as other things mentioned earlier.

Your dog is adorable. Hope Brian is feeling better.

Aww the poor little babydoll! He is adorable!

I hope everything works out ok!! Please keep us posted!

Dogs cannot eat chocolate, onions, grapes and raisins either!

OP, I'm sorry to hear about your puppy :grouphug:

FYI for the others who mentioned it, turkey and pork are actually just fine for dogs. That is, if there are no bones and the meat is cooked.

Pork can cause some issues because some types of pork (i.e., ham) are very fatty and salty. But plain, uncured pork (like uncured pork chops) are okay. Turkey skin should also be avoided because of the fattiness.

Of course, there are some dogs out there who can't tolerate it, but that can be the case with any food (just like some people get stomach issues when consuming certain foods -- nothing wrong with the food, just the individual person can't handle them).

Well, it looks like Brian will be having surgery tomorrow to remove the cellophane or whever clear foreign object is in his system.:sad1: The good thing is that he's no longer in pain/discomfort, as the barium scans showed the thing has moved from his stomach to his lower intestine, so I guess he can't feel it anymore. His appetite is back and is eating, but hasn't pooped at all in over 48 hours, so there's a blockage. We still have almost 12 hours until surgery, so there's still hope that he passes the thing by tomorrow morning. My poor baby. I promise to be more careful from now on. I feel terrible. I just want him to be ok, I love him so much. I'll post an update tomorrow. Thank you so much for the support.

Aww. Hopefully he'll "go" in the next few hours. pixiedust: (I'd think if it moved, there must be peristalsis.)

Oh, Aisling, please don't feel so bad! It's a great sign that Brian is eating. Eating/appetite is one of the biggest signs that something is wrong, so the fact that he actually *wants* to eat is good. Accidents happen...it's all a part of life. All you can do is learn and move forward. I think that you are a great person for being so concerned and doing everything that you can (and have)! Hang in there and best wishes!

isn't there an old remedy like castor oil or something?

Good luck with whichever way this event takes you.

 I hope your dog can pass it by tomorrow!!
My dog once bit a battery; that was bad. She was okay in about 48 hours. She also had a thing for eating wires and they got stuck while they were ahem...coming out and we had to assist her buy pulling them out.:scared1:Needless to say she doesn't eat foreign things anymore and we learned to keep things out of her reach.
I hope things work out okay:hug:

Hi Aisling, how's the dog doing? My male ate a long woolen glove when he was about 1 r old. It sat in his belly and wouldn't move so he had surgery to remove it. The fact is,dogs will eat ANYTHING and no,they don't learn a lesson! Given the opportunity, your pup will eat cellophane again!! Keep us updated on Brian.

I hope your puppy comes through surgery ok. Don't feel guilty these things happen. I have let my dogs chew on water bottles before I would have never thought about the cellophane.

Mineral Oil works for humans. Had a pediatric gastroenterologist recommend it for my son when he was a toddler.

I"M NOT SURE IF IT IS SAFE FOR DOGS maybe google it or ask the vet?

Brian is gorgeous and what a great name. I love it!

Don't feel guilty. Look how you're handling the problem - you're doing everything you can to make him better. Guilt would be appropriate if you hadn't bothered going to the vet or just didn't care. He's lucky to have you.

I'm sure he'll be all better soon. :)

Brian is sooo adorable. I hope all goes well with his surgery. Please don't feel guilty. Dogs (and cats) are notorius for eating stuff that is bad for them.

Don't feel guilty - really. Dogs eat anything they can get their hands on, much to your dismay. We have dog proofed the heck out of our house and they still get into things on occasion.

Hope he comes through the surgery okay!

I have one dog (a Lab/Weimeraner mix) who's definitely a chewer. He chewed a hat of mine up once and I caught him chewing on an earring the next day, luckily before he swallowed any of it. The other one (a Pitt/Lab mix) isn't a chewer at all. I've let them play with an empty soda bottle. I never thought of the cellophane as a danger, but I'm glad I know now and I hope your puppy is okay.
