Brought my cat into the vet this week and he had me giving him subcutaneous fluids for the next two weeks, he taught me to do this to save on vet fees :goodvibes.

So, the first day he's at the vet and is good as gold because he's on the "table of doom" aka the metal table. Animals just seem to freeze up on that table, lol. It goes well. Yesterday, I set up the bag, get him in his bed on the table and put the needle in, he's sitting there all nice and stuff and then he turns his head and gives me "The Look".:scared1:

Yup folks, it's all over, I anticipate a little more friction with the treatment today, I may just wear a nice sturdy ski glove.

Can you put foil on your dining room table and wear a white coat?

:lmao:

When we had to do that to our cat it took two of us. I would hold her still on the counter and DH would administer the fluids. You may need to see if you can get someone to help you if she won't cooperate.

LOL! I may just try that...I'm reminiscing about the last time I had to pill him for a week...did you know that hacking up hairballs is really good practice for hacking up an expensive antibiotic pill and shooting it across the floor?

:rotfl:

I also like Lara's suggestion.

I wish there was some way to get animals to understand that this will help them. Our dog takes pills stuffed in a treat with no issues but anything else, forget it. We had to use a steroid spray for her allergies this past spring and you would have thought we were trying to kill her. It was about 4 or 5 mists from a spray bottle-pretty simple but not to her :lmao:

My cat has to take laxatone for hairballs. you put it on their paw and they freak out because they don't want anything on their paw and you hope they lick if off instead of flinging it everywhere. This is what my mom has experienced with one of our other cats.

With my cat, I opened the tube, she came running over and started lapping it up out of the tube. Lucky me! She thinks it is a treat.

Pills, however, are a whole other story.

Towels are great. Big bath sheets. Catch the cat napping (it's hard to find our cats NOT napping) and wrap the towel around the cat before he/she knows what's up.

But yep, nothing beats a pair of heavy winter gloves when you're dealing with cat claws and teeth.

Sometimes smarter cats will figure out the whole rigamarole is for their benefit. We had a diabetic cat who would come to us if we were even the teeniest bit late with his insulin and demand his shot. Either he knew it was a 12 hour thing or he could feel his blood sugars. It made life easier to have him trot into the kitchen ahead of the shot giver and just stand patiently for his injection!

Did the vet give you a butterfly needle? That gives you (well, actually the cat) some wiggle room. I hang the bag with fluids from a large paper clip (or a plant holder..that works nice too), and put some tape on a butterfly needle, get it in fast, and then pet the cat..they don't seem to realize it's happening, as long as I don't have to hold them tight. It is much easier in either case with two people.

Done for the day! No fits or starts. I went a little slower today and brushed him as it was dripping. He was great :thumbsup2, such a good boy! He was actually purring.

He DID give me a little stinkeye, like "I know what you're up too!" but he behaved.

DMRick, I don't think it's a butterfly needle, but so far so good. I just keep a hand on it until I have to remove it.

Ha! He's making you think it's all ok...just wait till you fall asleep!!! :rotfl:

Seriously, glad it went well. My littlest one takes medicine better than my kid, but my other girl...well, it takes two grown women to hold her, both wearing shoulder length leather gloves, and another to clip her nails. She's all of 8 pounds. I pray she never gets sick. :rotfl:

I took my cat in for the subcut fluids after he refused(even tho he was so weak). Good luck!

LMAO! I can relate. He's actually really good with getting the nails clipped, but takes pill giving as a personal challenge. So, I got this liver tasting paste (so I was told anyway) instead of the pills and the first day, fine, the second day, fine-ish, third day he dribbled it out so on the fourth day I just opened up his mouth and shot it right down his throat...HAH! I think, gotchya!

Hack, hack, hack, BLEH! all over my chair...darned hairball reflex! Next time I'm just paying extra for the shot in the butt that is two weeks worth of antibiotic.

Glad things went well.

Mine is finally relaxing when I clip his nails. He usually waits until #9 before he starts spazzing now. :lmao:

On the other hand I am the only one that can give my brother's cat medicine when they go on vacations. His in laws used to volunteer but decided quickly that wasn't the job for them. I don't have any problem with it which is very odd since she is not a friendly cat. :confused3

We have just started using the Greenies Pill Pockets (I've tried other similar things) and I am so imporessed. The cats and kittens love them and I can get any pill down with those. I generally use a pill pusher, but sometimes it's not practical for the cat. I wish they had invented these a long time ago..my own cats could eat around anything I put their meds in.
