And if I haven't had this card since I was 18, I would so be long gone.
I had some free time tonight, so I decided to contact all of my credit card companies and request new cards because of my name change. (I got married and finally changed my name legally last week.)
I called Chase, no issues. I called American Express, talked to the nicest lady, whole process took 2 minutes. Called Kohls, no problem.
Called Capital One.
Apparently, someone placed a password on my account. I didn't do it, I would remember. Was transferred to the fraud department.
Long story short...
They told me that I would need to mail a copy of my drivers license with the name they have on file to them, stating that I did not approve the password on my account, and to write the name I wanted my account changed to and the address the new card should be sent to.
I told them that (duh) I changed my name and my drivers license now has my NEW name on it.
He told me I would need the one with the name THEY have on it.
I asked why he simply couldn't ask me the standard "mothers maiden name and birthday" question.
He told me I needed my password, not any of my mothers name or birthday information.
I asked what I should send if I didn't HAVE the old drivers license anymore.
He told me... HIGH SCHOOL REPORT CARDS!
I told him I am almost 30! Looong out of high school.
Finally, I asked him this. If someone stole my wallet WITH my credit cards AND drivers license in it, called Capital One requesting the card be changed from AKL_Megs to "Jane Doe", sent a photocopy of my drivers license that they stole, asking for them to change it to Jane Doe and send it to their address, would they do it?
He said yes, they would.

I am so upset with that CC company.
Would it really ruin my credit that much to cancel this card? I am ticked.
