I think Capital One has to be the absolute WORST credit card company out there...

And if I haven't had this card since I was 18, I would so be long gone.

I had some free time tonight, so I decided to contact all of my credit card companies and request new cards because of my name change. (I got married and finally changed my name legally last week.)

I called Chase, no issues. I called American Express, talked to the nicest lady, whole process took 2 minutes. Called Kohls, no problem.

Called Capital One.

Apparently, someone placed a password on my account. I didn't do it, I would remember. Was transferred to the fraud department.

Long story short...

They told me that I would need to mail a copy of my drivers license with the name they have on file to them, stating that I did not approve the password on my account, and to write the name I wanted my account changed to and the address the new card should be sent to.

I told them that (duh) I changed my name and my drivers license now has my NEW name on it.

He told me I would need the one with the name THEY have on it.

I asked why he simply couldn't ask me the standard "mothers maiden name and birthday" question.

He told me I needed my password, not any of my mothers name or birthday information. :sad2:

I asked what I should send if I didn't HAVE the old drivers license anymore.

He told me... HIGH SCHOOL REPORT CARDS! :rotfl:

I told him I am almost 30! Looong out of high school. ;)

Finally, I asked him this. If someone stole my wallet WITH my credit cards AND drivers license in it, called Capital One requesting the card be changed from AKL_Megs to "Jane Doe", sent a photocopy of my drivers license that they stole, asking for them to change it to Jane Doe and send it to their address, would they do it?

He said yes, they would.

:scared1:

I am so upset with that CC company.

Would it really ruin my credit that much to cancel this card? I am ticked.

I would be far more concerned with someone having the password to your CC account than what would happen to your credit score if you cancelled the card..

Even if you followed all of their demands, there will be a "time lag" until it's all straightened out and who knows what could happen before everything is changed? :confused3

I don't think anyone placed the password on my account. They said it was placed on my account early last year (he told me this in case that would "help my memory"... yeah, no, still didn't place the password on my account, thanks), and (knock on wood) nothing strange has happened on my account.

I don't see any problems with what they are doing. They just want to make sure they aren't giving info out to the wrong person;

It sounds as if they are being careful-which you should be glad about.
My Mom still has lots of credit cards in her old name-she's been remarried fro 10 years:)

Capital One and Chase are the two cards we regularly use and have never had any issues. I think they are just being cautious, even though it's frustrating to you.

Next time you get your bill, there is a place where you can change your name and address, just cross out the old and put in the new. If that doesn't work, just cancel the card, there's really not a big ding on your score.

Oh, I don't care that they are being careful, that I appreciate.

But to tell me that ANYONE could send MY drivers license and request that my card be changed to THEIR name and sent to THEIR house, now THAT I don't like. That is just plain stupid IMO.

Oh, okay. But will they send me a replacement card with the new name on it this way? No store will let me use it with my new drivers license.

I would think that a copy of your marriage license would provide them with all the information necessary to process a change of address form. Did they mention that? If not maybe calling them and asking if that would work might do the trick, as it has both your old and new name on it.

This is going to sound really weird, but try calling back. This EXACT thing happened to me. (only I wasn't trying to change my name)

They told me there was a password on the account, when I *knew* there wasn't, and this guy wanted me to fax him a copy of my Driver's Licence, my Passport, and my birth certificate. Um...NO WAY! I went round and round with this guy, with him INSISTING "You must send us the documents," and me saying why can't you just ask me the security questions?? I finally hung up in frustration.

I called back later, when DH was home. We were going to double-team them - lol. Well, I got a very nice lady who didn't know anything about a password on my account, asked me the security questions and all was well.

It was VERY strange!! THe only thing I can think of was that I called them from my cell, and when I called back I was home. So maybe they saw I was calling from the number that was associated with the account? :confused3

I will say Capital One has the most sensitive fraud department I have ever seen. I went on a field trip with DD while DH was at work. He used the card for lunch, then I used the card to buy stuff from the gift shop on the field trip. Or I tried to - they froze it for suspected fraud. I do know to notify them when we're traveling, but gosh, I didn't leave the country, I didn't even leave the STATE. We were just a couple of hours away!

So, try calling them back and see what happens...

Thanks. I will try tomorrow... too upset tonight! :rotfl: I wonder why this happens? And my cell is the number they have, but still.

if it were me and my cc company told me there was a password on my account when I knew there wasn't; I'd send them my shredded credit card in the mail with a note to cancel the account... then they'd go on 'the list' and I'd never do business with them again..... I'm a bad customer that way. ;)

This is how I am feeling right now.

I wish I could find my report card with my A+ in Business and Marketing class, and send that along with it and a note that says they get an F in business and marketing :rotfl:

I felt that way too, believe me. I was near tears when I hung up on that "YOU MUST SEND US THE DOCUMENTS!" guy. Seriously, he sounded like a German officer from Hogan's Heroes. Which might have been funny, but that is our main card and I needed it to work! (plus it was CREEPY! Why would I fax someone everything they'd need to steal my identity!!)

Capital One is pretty much the only card left that doesn't charge astronomical fees when you travel abroad. Plus their reward program rocks. :thumbsup2 Other than that one instance, I've had really good customer service, and we've had the card for years.

So have something good to drink, take a nice hot bath, get a good night's sleep, and call them back tomorrow.

OK, so say a person's account really does have a password. What happens if they honestly just forgot what it is? I have passwords on all kinds of accounts (not Capital One) and if I forget one I usually have the option to reset it after answering the security questions. Glad I don't need my HS report cards!

OP - let us know what happens when you call back.

Had something similar (although not exact happen) on a credit card (with no balance, of course).

My response was to cut the card in pieces, write a letter explaining why I was no longer doing business with the company, and informing them that were to never contact me again. I then sent it to the corporate office.

I received one reply, an apology and a confirmation that they'd never contact me again, which is exactly what I wanted.

I will not work with a company that has poor (and I don't mean simply grumpy, I mean quantifiably poor) service or one that jeopardizes my privacy (as this password nonsense does).

Most likely someone either hit the wrong tick box on your account, fat fingered a wrong code, or was simply looking at the wrong screen!

Regardless, seriously? Who needs that stress????

Cancel the card. It's not that big of a deal. I refuse to be held hostage by a credit score (and yes ours are quite high, thankyouverymuch).
