YOU'LL NEVER BELIEVE WHAT HAPPENED TO ME YESTERDAY!!!
Daytona Beach - Yesterday:
Hubby and I were walking out to the water to play, and he says, "it smells kinda fishy here, let's move down a little bit." I didn't think anything of it, and I followed him. Now think. Suddenly the water smells fishy. What could it be? Gee - a shark feeding-frenzy, perhaps? YES!!!
He knew what it was, but didn't want to scare me. As we were strolling through waist-high water to where it wasn't so "fishy", I suddenly feel something hard, slimy, and MOVING across my right ankle. I darn near tripped over it. I didn't panic until I set my other foot down, and felt it with THAT foot, too. Now, my feet were over 12 inches apart, and I have this slimy hard thing kinda trapped between my ankles, and it's wiggling like crazy on one end (the tail). I was sort of tripping over it, and for hours afterwards, my ankles were sore and swollen from the "impact". This is where I let out two really long, really loud, blood-curdling screams. People on the beach all stopped what they were doing to watch this woman get eaten alive (or panic for no reason).
Everything I've ever heard about sharks came rushing back to me in that instant as I was screaming so loud and hard my throat was about to bust. I remembered that most people are bit by sharks while swimming in the ocean because they step on the little buggers. So I jumped straight up and started swimming (not kicking my feet) with just my hands toward shore. Hubby says, "are you ok?" I say, "for now, but MOVE IT!"
Luckily, a nice size wave was coming, so we rode it in as fast as we could.
It was definitely a shark - I felt the dorsal fin as my other foot swept across the top of it. And besides, what other fish is the size of a full-grown german sheperd? A vendor on the beach said maybe a mackerel, but based on what I told him, he said it was most definitely a shark.
Whew. There was MY nightmare material for yesterday!
I wonder if I'll go back in the water again...probably!
