YOU'LL NEVER BELIEVE WHAT HAPPENED TO ME YESTERDAY!!!

Daytona Beach - Yesterday:

Hubby and I were walking out to the water to play, and he says, "it smells kinda fishy here, let's move down a little bit." I didn't think anything of it, and I followed him. Now think. Suddenly the water smells fishy. What could it be? Gee - a shark feeding-frenzy, perhaps? YES!!!

He knew what it was, but didn't want to scare me. As we were strolling through waist-high water to where it wasn't so "fishy", I suddenly feel something hard, slimy, and MOVING across my right ankle. I darn near tripped over it. I didn't panic until I set my other foot down, and felt it with THAT foot, too. Now, my feet were over 12 inches apart, and I have this slimy hard thing kinda trapped between my ankles, and it's wiggling like crazy on one end (the tail). I was sort of tripping over it, and for hours afterwards, my ankles were sore and swollen from the "impact". This is where I let out two really long, really loud, blood-curdling screams. People on the beach all stopped what they were doing to watch this woman get eaten alive (or panic for no reason).

Everything I've ever heard about sharks came rushing back to me in that instant as I was screaming so loud and hard my throat was about to bust. I remembered that most people are bit by sharks while swimming in the ocean because they step on the little buggers. So I jumped straight up and started swimming (not kicking my feet) with just my hands toward shore. Hubby says, "are you ok?" I say, "for now, but MOVE IT!"

Luckily, a nice size wave was coming, so we rode it in as fast as we could.

It was definitely a shark - I felt the dorsal fin as my other foot swept across the top of it. And besides, what other fish is the size of a full-grown german sheperd? A vendor on the beach said maybe a mackerel, but based on what I told him, he said it was most definitely a shark.

Whew. There was MY nightmare material for yesterday!

I wonder if I'll go back in the water again...probably!

That's so scary... glad you are both okay!!!

You've just described, very vividly, one of my nightmare experiences!!!

Glad you're okay!

What a heart pounder! Glad to hear you are o.k. I hate just being in the ocean because of the fish, let alone a shark. Give me a pool anytime!

I'll probably venture back into the water again. I have to, if I want to body-surf!! Which I absolutely LOVE to do.

Besides, even if that guy did get me, I'd probably just wind up with about 50 stitches, maybe lose a toe or two....LOL

The big ones that can eat you in one bite don't come close enough to shore to get the bodysurfers.

I mean, I have been bodysurfing since I was able to walk! I can't just quit...

Lesson learned: When you suddenly notice all the pelicans and seagulls are floating out in the water and not standing on the sand where the water breaks - they're eating. And more than likely, beneath the surface, other things are eating, too!

So watch for the birdies before going out, and stay far away from them!

 That must have been terrifying! Glad you are okay. I love the ocean too so I'll remember to look for the birds.

OMG, I would be freaking out! Like Oldkicker, this is one of my nightmare scenarios too.

But I love the beach and love getting in the water, so I force myself to banish all these thoughts when I'm actually in the water.

I will not think of this incident over Memorial Day weekend....I will not think of this incident over Memorial Day weekend....I will not think of this incident over Memorial Day weekend...

:p :p :p

OH MY GOD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I BELIEVE IT!!! You are so lucky that you didn't get bitten!!!!! What a scare you had! What part of Daytona were you at? We usually go to a pretty secluded spot in Ponce Inlet. WOW! I am going to print your story off for my family to read. We haven't been in the water to swim for about almost 2 years now. I'll go in to my knees SOMETIMES but that's about it! Thank God my parents are buying a house with a pool!

Will this stop you from swimming there again? I hate to sound like a scardy cat, I know it's safe if you swim at such and such a time, etc. but I am just too fond of my body without the shark teeth scars... :)

Thank goodness you are ok! Sheeeesh!!!

gives me the heebie jeebies.....of course my most favorite movie is JAWS.......once when I was in the waters at Popham Beach....there was a big critter that was flat and a long tail.....of course I didn't go into the water after that.....give me a lake minus the eels and a good big pool.......glad you the shark was not interested in your legs....and feet

I probably would have died from a heart attack! I'm a big chicken, I dont get anywhere near the water mostly for that reason! That's good that it wont stop you from going back. I always admire people who continue after something scary happens, I'm quite the opposite, once something scares me, I'm thru!

OMG! Thank goodness you are ok! I would have died of fright on the spot and the shark would have had one very good meal!

What a scary experience. Amazing how all of that knowledge stored somewhere in our minds comes to the surface when we really need it. Glad your okay.

You've just described, very vividly, one of my nightmare experiences!!!

Me too! I am a pretty adventurous person, but sharks creep me out so bad that I used to be scared to go into the Living Seas at Epcot.:o

Oh my!!! I would've had a heart attack!!!!

Thank goodness you're OK!!:D

Once when we snorkling in the keys about eleven years ago DH turned the corner on a reef and literally bumped into a shark. He claims it was a tiger shark that he was lucky to get out alive (also said it was at least eight feet) from what I saw it looked more like a four foot nurse shark that could care less about him. It took me ten years to get him to snorkle again, and that was in the cayman islands where he became "one' with the sting rays,... maybe I should tell him they are in the shark family! :)

YIIIKETY-YIKE-YIKE-YIIIKES!!!!!!!!! I totally agree w/you that it was a shark. Isn't the creepiest part that you don't hear anything? DD lost a flipper 2 summers ago and I told her I would find it( she had just gotten a new set for her b-day) I thought to take the raft w/me as I was lazy and figured I would lay across the raft and just put my face in snorkeling to look for it. Apparantly I was just a bit further out than I thought. I saw a very dark shape swim under the raft, like a man-o-war, only the shape kept going and felt the fin along my leg! My Mom and brother had been trying to call to me as my Bro. thought he saw something, and that they felt I would never find the flipper in water that deep. I was fixed on that shape and speechless and scared and trying to stay calm all in about 5 seconds. I had a raft tho, so carefully lifted my legs out and paddled back as quickly and gently as I could. My Brother was snickering at the Florida "wannabe" and my Mom just kept saying, I figured you saw something, you usually stay out there forever! I asked if they saw it and brother said he thought he did, but nothing re-surfaced. It could of been a guitar fish, except fotr the fin part touching my leg, or something ELSE touched my leg....needless to say, DD has only 1 flipper now. I still can't believe how I never heard a thing. Not a splash, ripple, NOTHING!
Glad you are O.K....btw, I have gone back in...the next day...hey, there were dolphins out that day!:p

Ponce Inlet (South Daytona Beach) is the #1 shark bite area in the country - I'd stay away from it if I were you.

Normally, we go about 8 miles north of there, but we were kinda in a hurry before the sun went down to get in some body surfing.

We'd been working on our roof at our Daytona house, and were so hot we just wanted to hurry up to the water! I'm going back to Flagler or Ormond Beach from now on (our usual spots).
