I spoke to Jerry Monaco..Kinda long

I'm just surprised that the man took the time to look up the OP's phone number and call. Why would he do that? He must get thousands of letters. The guy is crazy.

Kudos to the OP for sending the letter with your identification to Mr. Monaco and talking to him with an open mind. Hate mail is definitely NOT okay.

While I've been reading this thread one thing has bothered me. In your original email you've mentioned you've not seen the video, Mr. Monaco's interviews, or other coverage of the incident. It does seems a little strange that you're commenting on the reaction of people who actually taken the time to follow the incident and HAVE seen the video and Mr. Monaco's media appearances. Perhaps prior to your next post you could take the time and effort to read the previous threads (with links to video, police reports, etc...) before judging peoples responses.

Something is a little strange here.

I still think he is a huge fraud and I also feel he is a liar. His actions on TV, father or not, spoke volumes about his character. The fact that he was so quick to contact the media also spoke volumes about his character.
Ditto.

Something is a little strange here.

Hope it's clear that I totally think the whole thing with the Tigger incident is totally a gambit for someone to make big money off a law suit that has absolutely no merit and that your comment meant you were less than sure about the voracity of the poster who I quoted in my response. The way your quote came out didn't reference that I was questioning the responses of another poster (not the OP).

Sorry! Yes, I meant that something seems strange that the guy would take the time to look up a phone number of the writer from one of possibly thousands of letters and call that person to discuss the subject at length. Why would the guy call a random person?? Sorry, I didn't mean your post! I really shouldn't have quoted you at all.

I think something Mr. Monaco is forgetting is this, the kid was "not" hurt. There was nothing done to hurt him.

Therefore there is no need for apology from the CM in the Tigger suit. Disney apolgized for the incident. If the CM apologizes that is an admisson that something actually happened.

Mr. Monaco, is either stupid or very naive to think he could go on national tv and not get hate mail.

It was an accident possibly on the part of both CM and kid, and therefore, it should have never been reported. They needed to just move on. By not taking the high road, they got in the gutter and when you do that you get dirty.

Sorry no sympathy from me to Mr. M.

Hate that his younger kids who are totally innocent in this are suffering. But Dad should have thought of that.

I'm sure we all know who Jerry Monaco is, if by chance you don't he is the dad of the boy who was involved in the now infamous "Tigger Incident"

I was one of the people who wrote to him after the incident happened. I did not know him before. I was and still am on Tiggers side BUT I did not send him hate mail as so many people have done. I didnt write him love mail either but mostly expressed my opinion. I signed my name to the letter and since I am not hiding he was very easily able to track down my phone number. I didnt ask him how he got it but I assume the internet. When he first told me who he was I braced myself as I expected him to get nasty. To my surprise he did not. He told me of his respect for me because I had signed my letter. He has recieved hundreds of very nasty letters and phone messages from people who we not brave enough to sign their names. He told me the most horrific part of this is how people have attacked his children, not just Jerry Jr but the others as well. He read somewhere that someone said Tigger should have attacked and ripped apart his other children as well. :sad2:

We spoke for over an hour on his dime, He was unable to sway me to his side but he calmly debated the entire issue with me. I was greatful for the oportunity to debate with him. How often have you seen someone on TV and wanted to tell them what you thought?...I have actually gotten to do that.

In the end he is a father who loves his children, he tells me (Im paraphrasing)

- He truly believes Tigger attacked his son
-The handler did approach him following the incident and apologise, saying that He (Tigger) was not feeling well
-He realizes he came off badly on the news but feels he was only protecting his child. He went to the news because the wouldnt take a police report. Once he appeared on TV, they were willing to take a report.

He told me all he really wants is an apology from MF ( man in the costume)
I asked if that happens what will he do, he said it would all be over.
Then I asked what if it doesnt, he then said he would have to explore his options. No lawsuit has been filed.

He told me that it has been a nightmare and he never imagined how cruel the world would be, especially to his children. His son is being harrassed.
He told me that his son really is a good kid, never been in trouble, never been in a fight, gets good grades in school etc. He feels badly about the way people are making fun of the gloves etc We talked about how this was a good lesson about how people percieve us based on how we dress.

I thinks its awful people have been sending hate mail, saying horrible things and then not being brave enough to sign their names. Thats no better if not worse than the way he behaved on the news. If you have an opinion send mail, not hate mail.

I told him that I felt a lot of the anger from the world is based on his appearance on TV, he was spewing venom and did not appear to be a resonable man. I think the public in general based their opinon on that. I know I did. I reviewed the incident tape and the one with him on it and I felt he was over reacting. Which is why I wrote to him in the first place.

We debated our two views of the tape, I saw Tigger attempt to pull the boys arm off his back, resulting in an arm lock, he then had to turn and when doing do accidentally hit him with his "paws"
He saw Tigger get his son in a martial art arm lock and then turn and punch him. His response to the thought that tigger might now have known the boy was there....."of course he knew he was there, he had his arm around him."

He also feels tha Tigger admitted to it because he said it was in self defense, I argued that he said he turned in self defense, not that he "punched" him in self defense.

All in all I was glad to have the opportunity to debate this with him, the one question I realized I didnt ask after I hung up and was kicking my self for...
"If Tigger really did punch his son....why did he do it?" I think thats what a lot of us struggle with...no regular person hits someone for no reason.

He was nothing but polite to me.
He wants us to remember that we are not really talking about Tigger but a 31 yr old man that was inside this costume
I have been saying all along (and in my letter) lets give the boy the benefit of the doubt and maybe he accidenatlly pulled the costume resulting in the reaction from Tigger. I still think it was an accident. I don't believe it was Tiggers intention to hurt the boy. Jerry Monaco thinks differently

FYI

You seem very sympathetic to him and his son. You really think it was an accident? Perhaps you're one of the very few and that is why he responded. Then again it would not surprise me that he is trying to garner support from folks in Canada. You know, as if he may be on a campaign. :confused3

I haven't been keeping tabs on this story much, but yet I haven't seen anything having him disclose such personal, first-hand information to our media. My dh has a court case and I can't even talk about it closely with anyone. It's odd how he calls you and discusses the case so freely with a stranger. :confused3 He shares so much detail.

Sorry, this only makes me doubt him, his story, and his intentions even more.

Did you, by chance, share that you belong to this bulletin board with 1000s of members? You could be in his publicity plan. :)

I am in the UK and there has been no media coverage of this. I have seen stills but have not managed to find the coberage you referred to. Perhaps if my right of free if not totally informed free speach bothers you so much then you could post the relevent links to help me.

Well, I am glad he has calmed down, but I don't believe for a second that he "just wants an apology". If that were so, he wouldn't have done the ER visit, etc.

He is probably backing down because enough folks have reminded him that he was a horses' pitoot.

My arn't we touchy!

I am sure you trust your neighbor, did you ask him how he found out as I am sure that Lawyers have a duty of confidentiality.

No, not touchy at all. :) Just if you quote something somebody said, you should quote it correctly!! ;)

Sure I asked him...I asked him A LOT of thing about it....we talked about this ordeal over dinner and some tv.

I guess that is not any more confidential than the guy pulling the media in on this 5 minutes after he watched the video and saw $$$ in his pocket. ;)

He did not tell me to not say anything...so perhaps he figures even if he really should not have told me, who in the world would trace it back to me or him? Not like I am telling the neighborhood - they could care less. :teeth:

Sammie - that was very well said. :thumbsup2

I don't know think I am sympathetic, I am merely reporting the conversation as it happened.
I stand by my support for Tigger. I do think however that this man has realized he got a lot more than he expected for his 15 mins of fame. I am not taking his side we merely had a calm debate, each of us with our own opinions.
He tells me that no lawsuit has been filed. I went back and reviewed all the videos I had seen before writing my letter and I can not find anywhere that he says he is planning to sue..... if anyone finds video of him saying this please send me the link.

I do agree that he has brought all this grief on himself

If you spoke to him for a long time did he say how he found out. I am guessing this is legal industry gossip. I was not really making a point about your neighbor not keepping a confidence but the lawyer for the alleged plaintiff. Even if it was your neighbor who was his lawyer you would have no legal duty to keep quiet.

Thanks for the link.

Having seen the coverage I am a little surprised by the level of the debate.

The incident seems less serious than the stills. I find it difficult to make my mind up what happend but could not see some of the subtleties people have referred to previously. I also thought the interviews were less inflamatory than I thought from the responses.

I hope I am now allowed to make comments!

I think that is the point with the majority of people debating this. That this situation was not serious enough to warrant Mr Monaco to get the media involved, take his child to the ER (please), obtain an atty, etc. I think most people think it is obvious that his actions suggest he is looking for FAR more than an apology.

Maybe all of the negative backlash gave him pause and he will just let it die. I hope so, for the sake of his kids. I can't imagine how embarrassing this has to be for them.

I have only debated this here, don't really have any interest in talking to him, writing him hate mail or otherwise. I do think it's ironic that he is so shocked that he received hate mail after making this a media spectacle.

Actually, and no offense to the OP, but I find it a little odd that anyone would write any kind of letter or anything to him, hate or otherwise. It seems a little over invested.

I was kind of thinking the same thing. I can't imagine feeling the need to contact him. That is strange to me.
