I really wanted to love this book and I'll admit at 1st I did. The premise was fresh and the writing good and then they had to go and get married and it went down hill from there! Im only about halfway through with it and I dont think Ill be able to finish it. I mean come on it has a great storyline and some interesting characters do we really need all the graphic sex. A little I can see (they are newlyweds afterall;)) but come on. Are we ever gonna get back to the story at hand or are they going to just boink each other till the end of time.

Oh and by the way I had no issues with the wife-beating! Actually I felt it appropriate for the time period and thought she probably deserved it.

there are fairly graphic scenes throughout the series, but it really does get back to the story at hand as well and overall is a rip-roaring good time! maybe you can skim the scenes that offend?

It's not that I mind graphic sex it's that it seems now that's all there is to the book. It's as if all other storylines have been abandoned and the sex scenes are twisted to say the least. At 1st I thought they were sweet and touching almost but now:scared1:

I've read the whole series. It does get back to the story, but their "lusty" relationship is a big part of who they are.

I don't remember that being too much of a big deal but (it's been a long time), I think that is part of the earlier books and it kind of "forms" their relationship.

After you get past that it sort of lays off a bit.

I will warn you though that further along in the story there are some more graphic things that are a bit tough to get through that had nothing to do with Jamie and Claire.

:lmao: Don't ever read a Laurell K Hamilton book. I really don't think the Outlander books are all sex, all the time. The author's research and attention to detail is amazing.

I didn't find the scenes in the first book particularly disturbing except for those near the end. (I've rewritten that sentence four times because I'm not sure where you're at in the book.) As Christine says, there are some really disturbing storylines in the other books. When I reread them, I just skip over those particular sections.

I just finished Outlander last night and was never bothered by the sex. I think it helps define the intense relationship they have. Keep reading, if you loved the beginning you won't be disappointed in the rest of the book. I started reading the next one, and I hope it is just as good.

I just reread the series and yes, they get a little focused on sex but there is a lot more to the books then that as well. They do tend to drag on a bit.

The series as a whole is well worth getting into. Sex is a huge ongoing part of not only their relationship, but others around them as well, and the author isn't shy about it. But this is probably my very favorite book series-- I love all the historical detail and the plot elements that are often familiar (I took lots of history classes) but told from a completely different perspective than I've ever seen before. I think if you keep going you'll really enjoy it.

I enjoyed Outlander but so far I am trudging through the beginning of Dragonfly in Amber . *sigh*

They had that as a free book on Barnes and Noble so I got that on my Nook ready to read. I've always heard good reviews on this series and I thought for free I'll try it.

me too!

I had read so many good things here on the "what are you reading threads" that I was going to use it as a Xmas gift idea! Then I saw that it was free at B&N - so I down loaded yesterday! Now if I can only find time during the holidays to read it!:)

:scared1: Just got to say that Outlander is my all time favorite book & series! I am in the middle of reading the series for the 8th time.

I felt the same way. Those parts seemed to drag on for pages. It wasn't just the sex scenes either. The book started to really go into graphic detail about beatings and whippings. I just thought it was too much. I actually started rolling my eyes every time Jamie would begin to tell the story of yet another beating in his life. We get it! I just want the story to get back to the plot!

Having said all that, I really enjoyed the storyline. I'm debating whether to dive into the rest of the series. If Diana Gabaldon routinely spends hundreds of pages on these details that really don't add too much to the story, then maybe I'm just not a fan of her writing style.
