I-Pad equivalent for 4 year old?

Another vote for the iPad. Mine of my girls are slightly to moderately delayed in different areas and the iPad has been a blessing. They even use them in their speech and occupational sessions. Many of the schools around here use them as early as kindergarten, so they need to be comfortable with them. Both of my girls know how use their apps and are very proficient with them.

If you are concerned about damage, Fisher Price makes a case for the iPads, made for children.

Yes the "mini" or "micro" pad is an apple product.

Same as an iPad (10 inch)just smaller -- or bigger than an iPod Touch -- (4 inch). It supposed to be 7.5 inch and is designed for the in between market.

It's still a rumor of course, just a poorly kept secret/rumor as they always are.

Well, I feel decidedly low tech!! I don't even have an IPad, never even used one before. I don't even have a smart phone. (My husband does have an iPhone and it is kind of neat, I admit.) I can't justify the cost for any of them for myself, never mind for the kiddos. We could in theory afford them but then we wouldn't have as much for pointless Disney souveniers.

Sorry if I'm not much help. I'm just fascinated at how many kids my children's age (4 and 5) have such technology at their hands! Mine just have blocks, books, balls, marbles, etc - and of course way too many Disney stuffies.

Check out slickdeals. Cheap tablets often come up under their hotdeals forum. There was recently one for $69. Of course it isn't as good as an ipad but, something like that would probably be good enough for a child.

Something to keep in mind is that the cheap Androids might be DOA -- stuck with a non compatible OS that cannot utilize the new Android marketplace -- which means no software other than what came with it.

We bought a KLU from Walmart for MIL to take on her trip to Europe, and it was only good as a $150 PDF reader.

Alhtough I do not own an ipad personally, I work in an autism program where many of our children have ipads. I have been very impressed with how much abuse they can take when they have a cover. There are special covers made for really tough abuse. The ones I have seen get thrown, pounded on, dropped on the floor, etc. and they still work great!
So, make sure you get a cover and screen protector!

Don't go with an older generation iPod Touch. My son has one generation back and Apple no longer supports the operating system so I can't upgrade his when new upgrades come out. That means he is stuck on an old operating system and many of the apps don't work/can't be downloaded onto his iPod.

Purchased an Innotab yesterday for DD *yes she's 9 **barely* she's expressed interest in it as recently as a few days ago, checked the demo model out @ Walmart. She has 2 cousins, 5 & 3 + 1 more on the way we can pass it down to - all boys *the oldest told the Dr. @ the US "I hope you're wrong!" somewhat angrily he wanted a baby sister

I went with blue, it is one of DD's favorite colors + those 2 *soon to be 3 boys* I played with it last night *purchased a wall adapter/car one is on the way from Amazon* it's pretty neat, I'm excited about being able to load movies/music on an SD card for her!
*She's not aware of it yet, spent last night and Grandma/pa's house.
