I need your feedback on 'Ohana

Wow! People either seem to LOVE it or HATE. Very little in between. Since we are staying at Poly and plan to take time to enjoy the resort we have ADR's for Ohana and Kona for both breakfast and dinner. How can one place evoke such extreme responses? Maybe things will even out (for the better) before our trip in Sept?

We'll let you know soon. We have Mother's Day dinner ADR at 'Ohanas this Sunday (our 1st dinner upon arrival). Won't be able to compare to old menu as this will be our 1st venture there.

I have eaten at 'Ohana three times, twice before the menu change and once recently after. I loved the new shrimp, the scalloped potatoes, and the new dessert. I was prepared to not like the wonton chips, but they were quite good. Also, we asked for our steak medium rare and it was excellent! The only thing I could take our leave was the sausage, but I think it was a bit over-cooked.

I would give the new menu a shot if you have not tried it yet.

P.S. The guy singer is MUCH better than the chick.

I went to Ohana in Sept 05. I have to say it is THE ONLY TS place we are returning to in August, it was that great. The view was great, the service was wonderful, the entertainment for the kids was fun, the food was very good and there was PLENTY of it! I did not LOVE the peel and eat style shrimp but oh well....the turkey was kind of tough but other than that it was a GREAT GREAT MEAL!!!
I did not eat there when they had the old menu. But I did love the new one! The new dessert is WONDERFUL and we all loved it! It was a great experience for my whole family!!!
I love the salad too!!
just had to add that!!

just fyi
thanks

Jen

So, fellow Mom of 3 Princesses, may i ask what sit down meals you will be doing this trip? pretty pwease? Thanks

We have been many times before and once after the change to 'Ohana. We were very disappointed in some of the changes. The shrimp served in a bowl was the most disappointing. They were tasteless and drowing in sauce. This used to be our favorite part of the meal. No longer. We really missed the stuffed wontons. The chips they serve now aren't even up to bar food standards. They also took away the sweet dipping sauce they had for the wontons. The potatoes were very good and we liked them much better then the rice so that was a postitive change. The new bread pudding is outstanding. It is our favorite part of the meal. We do miss the pineapple bread served with the meal though. All in all when they took away the skewered shrimp and good wontons they lost us as frequent guests. At one time 'Ohana was our favorite restaurant and a must do each trip, and we take many, but now we avoid the place. What a shame.

I edited my statement above. I wrote it wrong. I meant to say that the 6 out of 30 did not like the new menu and 24 liked it more or as much as the old menu.

Thanks for the emails and responses.

Also looking at the responses here and the emails I have so far it still seems like 2/3 of the people like or love the new menu so I am not sure where the reports of most people not liking the new menu are coming from.

Aloha

Steve

Well I was just about to email this, but saw your request to post also, so here goes:

Hi Tikiman!

We have eaten at 'Ohana about 6 times before the menu changed and twice since it has changed. If I had to choose between old and new, I would choose old. It is not like I won't eat there since the change (obviously :teeth: ), but some of the changes were not for the good.

Pros (of change):
That dessert is to die for. I think the pineapple was probably a little more healthy, but..

The scalloped potatoes are great, but they DO NOT belong with that meal. As much as I love to eat them, I wish they were not there! So maybe that is a con.

I love the new salad. I could eat that entire bowl (if it weren't for those dang scalloped potatoes!)

The wings/drummettes are delicious. But very messy. Maybe another con? You decide!
But I liked the old ones better, not as messy.

Cons (of change)

the fried wontons. They are just greasy and nasty

no shrimp wontons. How could they??

I miss the rice and I know my husband misses it. Goes much better than scalloped potatoes. Sorry, had to make that point AGAIN!

Those way over cooked vegetables. Yuck. I can't remember what vegetables they used to serve, but I don't remember disliking pretty much anything on the old menu

What the heck is sausage doing in that meal?? I usually love sausage and actually tried it last time (not this time) and it was undercooked. And the other meats defiantly did not enjoy sharing the plate with that meal! I passed this time.

So, my vote is, bring back the old menu!

We were just there last week and did not like the new menu. We ate there once before and we really loved the old menu. This time we really missed the rice and prefered the old chicken wings and veggies. We hated the salad dressing, and we don't like saugage and wondered why it was offered and same goes for those potatos. We will not go back.

'Ohana has had changes before and will probably have more in the future. There are old things I miss and new things I love and it is still my favorite restaurant at WDW.

The changes occured after July 15th 2005.

I'm still trying to decide on this--the loss of the pineapple, rice, pot stickers and shrimp won-tons has really made me questions this one. I may pick Kona in it's place.

hi!! :wave2:

I would be happy to share, as we (as in I!!!) have several planned for August~

1900 PF
Ohana
LeCellier
LTT or CP (kids say LTT I say CP!)
50's but I may change that one, we'll see... I am thinking I don't want a TS on MGM day because we missed so much of it last time and its MY favorite park...may switch to Boma or Jiko...
Coral Reef (the princesses chose to do 2 Epcot days vs 2 MK days and we are doing TL one day this trip as well as DTD which we have never done!)
possibly a Ohana bkfst or Kona bkfst...have not made up my mind on this one!!

and it looks as though I need ONE more TS, preferably monorail accessable for one more day that I accidentally booked PF for!! woops...

we may do CG for 2 credits but I am leary about taking three kids there, ven though they are very well behaved....

and we've done CM's so we could always do WCC by boat from MK or Concourse....

looks like I don't have it all exactly mapped out huh??

anyway the PRINCESSES of my house want no more "Princess meals" they were not too thrilled with CRT to be honest...
however I over rule them and we are going to PF...

so nana nana booooo booooo...to them.....

:lmao:

We were just at O'Hanas last Saturday (5/6). I wanted to try it even htough my DH is allergic to pork. He was a trooper and went along with the plan. Both of us are picky eaters--no seafood, obviously no pork, very few veggies, etc. We LOVED the food! The salad dressing was awesome. We liked the wontons, especially the peanut sauce (the reddish-orange one was just ok, but we liked the pesto-y one too). We could have eaten just that and been happy. We skipped the shrimp but did like the wings. I also enjoyed the potatoes. No, they are not your run-of-the-mill scalloped potatoes. They had a sweet taste to them. We only ate the steak, and it was fine. The chef and waiter we had were extremely accomodating. The entertinment was good for us--not too overwhelming for my DS5 that doesn't do a lot in the area of participating. As for dessert--I am not a bread pudding fan, so all I did was dump the caramel sauce on the ice cream and loved it!!!

We will definitely add O'hana's to our trips. My advice--I would not expect world-class, 5 star dining. You aren't going to get that. But for an enjoyable dinner, not rushed, with some different types of food, it is well worth it! This is not the type of restaurant we would try at home, so for us it was great.

That being said, we were never there before the menu change so I cannot compare. I didn't research this restaurant too much before making the ADR so I didn't build up my expectations.

We ate there last Friday, everything was good. I do miss the wontons, but not enough to stop going. They never came around with the pork.

1900 PF (we did this last year, it was very good)
Ohana (on our list again in spite of the changes)
LeCellier(on our list for the 1st time)
LTT or CP (kids say LTT I say CP!) (doing LTT for the 1st time)
50's(doing this one on thanksgiving day) but I may change that one, we'll see... I am thinking I don't want a TS on MGM day because we missed so much of it last time and its MY favorite park...may switch to Boma or Jiko...
Coral Reef (the princesses chose to do 2 Epcot days vs 2 MK days and we are doing TL one day this trip as well as DTD which we have never done!)
possibly a Ohana bkfst or Kona bkfst...have not made up my mind on this one!!(we will hit both of these for b/f, hopefully)

We will also do Kona for dinner, Sci Fi, and I want to do room service on our last day (BF)

Thanks for sharing, I love seeing where others are eating.

Well I want to thank everyone for their feedback on the new ‘Ohana menu. I read through everything here and the emails I got to come up with some numbers. I tried to reply to everyone but I missed a few and a few of the addresses bounced back and would not deliver the message but I did add up all the responses. So it looks like 63% of those who responded liked the new menu and 37% did not like it. Some comments that were in a lot of the messages were;

1. Dry Meat
2. Desert was great
3. service was not good or felt rushed
4. atmosphere was great

I guess I will see for myself in December but I appreciate the feedback from everyone.

Aloha

A pertinent distinction should be made in regard to those who liked/loved the new menu but had never tried the old. This is invalidates the comparison statistics if used.

The old menu was great and I don't mind change but the changes were wholesale, IMO (not necessary) and the taking away of the skewered shrimp for the more mundane sauteed shrimp was a crime as was replacing real wontons with CHIPS for goodness sake!!! The addition of the god auful potatoes is a head scratcher to me as well.
pirate:

Everyone has their own tastes and right to their own opinions. In that respect, the "god awful" potatoes are really tasty. The rice everyone keeps saying they miss and was fantastic now that is a head scratcher to me. It tasted like instant rice that they quickly threw some jarred sauce in, maybe that is what hawaiian rice tastes like and I'm thinking it should taste more like chinese fried rice, but in any event, to each their own. Everyone is entitled to thier opinion and in some cases strong, obnoxious opinions but thank goodness we are all, in the end allowed to like what we like.

Heather Page, I assume I am the "stong, obnoxious opinion" you were referring to, since you took the time to show everyone how dumb I must be by pointing out a spelling mistake?

Interesting...Very interesting... :rolleyes1
pirate:

I will chime in again with regards to the potatoes. To me they are tasty, but they have no business in that meal! And neither does the sausage. I loved the old menu, I like the new menu.
