Tommorrow is storybook day at my kids school. They have to dress up as storybook characters. The letter that was sent home said that they can not wear their Halloween costumes and they cannot be store bought costumes, thay have to be homemade. I am at a loss, I'm not very creative, and I have been going through the tons of children's books looking for a character.
Does anyone have any ideas of what kind of costume or character I could make?

How about Pinnochio? All you need is a hat with a feather and somehow make a really long nose??? The rest is just boys' clothing.

Uuuuggghhh! Our old elementary school always did this and I hated it. Fortunately, we were allowed to buy costumes.

You could do the scarecrow from the Wizard of Oz.

You could do an indian girl (Pocahontas). We were lucky on that one because we found some "indian looking" material and my mom kind of made some thrown together indian garb.

Good luck.

Pippi Longstocking

Junie B Jones

those are both girls- but I bet ya got the clothing in your house! Those are the 2 that my DD's did, and we didnt have to buy anything

Why do schools do this? I am the most uncreative person ever and would struggle with this...the poor parents!!!!

NO I am!

DS11. Same problem. We chose an old fashioned ghost!

Instructions.
1) Get a white sheet
2)Place over their head
3)Cut to length (does not need to be straight)
4)Make eye holes (this step is VERY important)
5) Have a glass of wine & send the little goblin on their way.

8 year old boy, 5 year old boy, and 5 year old girl.

Tom Sawyer and Huck Finn for the boys?

Little Red Riding Hood for the girl?

A pirate is an easy one...there are lots of storybook characters that are pirates...here is a costume example with no sewing...http://familyinternet.about.com/cs/halloweencostumes/l/blcostumepirate.htm

A Harry Potter costume should be very simple. As long as you have the glasses, he would be recognizable.

Here is a big bad wolf costume directions: http://jas.familyfun.go.com/arts-and-crafts?page=CraftDisplay&craftid=10222

Three little pigs.... http://jas.familyfun.go.com/arts-and-crafts?page=CraftDisplay&craftid=10281

How about the spider from Charlotte's Web?
What you need:

Black T-shirt
2 pairs black tights or stockings
3 pairs cheap gloves
String
Newspaper or other material for stuffing tights
Face paint
Directions:

If using tights, cut them into 2 legs.
Stuff the legs/stockings and sew shut.
Sew the four legs on to the black T-shirt.
Sew two pairs of the gloves on to the extra arms.
Use string to join the arms, so that when your child moves his arm, he moves the other two as well.
Draw six eyes with face paint on your child's forehead and spider 'fangs' on his cheeks.

There are also Cat in the Hat or Eric Carle characters.

Or if you go to crayola.com you can make costumes using brown grocery bags under their Become a Different Kind of Animal section. You have to register first.

Our school does this...the "Book Parade." The long prairie skirts are in for girls...wear that and be Laura from Little HOuse.

For all of you who hate this, it could be worse: I had a friend who isn't Catholic, but sent her kids to Catholic schools. For All Saints Day (Nov. 1) her twin son and daughter had to come dressed as saints! Not being Catholic, she had never even heard of the saint her daughter was supposed to be !

Hey are you talking about me? My kids go to a Catholic school (we are non-Catholic). Saint Day is ALWAYS a challenge for me. But basically, they all wear capes. :teeth:

When our elementary school did "Storybook Day", besides the costume, we also had to make one of the double poster things that you wear over your body. On the front poster, the child would have to paint or draw a part of the story and on the back poster board you had to put the author, title, etc. of the book. What a PAIN!

For DD5 you could do Angelina Ballerina. My DD(almost 8) did this at both 5 and 6. She takes ballet so we had everything we needed: pink leotard and a pink tutu. I made a tail out of white felt wrapped around a piece of jewlery wire (to make it stiff) and attached it to the tutu. For the ears, I took a cheap headband, wrapped it with white ribbon and then hot glued white felt ears and a pink ribbon on top. I actually made 15 of these headbands as party favors for an "Angelina Ballerina" birthday party for her 5th birthday. It's really easy and takes no time at all.

My son is going to be Cat in the Hat for Halloween, but that is a store bought costume. My twins are going to be Thing One and Thing Two.

I would use those costumes. Why can't they be store bought? What are they going to do? Kick them out? :confused3

Excuse my bluntness. I hope that didn't sound bad. I am a mom of three teenage kids and have gotten hardened to those kind of requests. I have been there. ;)

No, I feel the same way. I called the school to ask why they couldn't wear store bought costumes and they said they wanted the kids to be creative and not rely on their Halloween costumes. My thought is "Why have it so close to Halloween then???".

What I find funny is that it is not the kids who are having to be creative but the parents! Now that mine are in their early to mid teens, they are finally getting creative on their own.
