All the small things add up. Combine errands to save on gas. Skip fast food meals. Rent a movie, skip the theater. Brew coffee at home. Go to the grocery store with a list and stick to it. These are things you can do to save for your trip

Finding a good deal.............that takes a whole different set of strategies. You need to start off by doing your homework. On site, off site, rental car, possible grocery purchase, etc etc.

I do believe that this board is a great source of information!

Good luck.

Coupons use the money saved towards bills or disney trip coupons only work if it's an item you normally buy anyway tho. Even then if there is another brand just as good that is cheaper then buy the better deal. Many stores does double coupon days also wait till the item is on sale use coupon an save that much more.

You don't say how old son is Would it be possible for son to get small token gift for Christmas an make the disney trip the end of Jan your Christmas maybe at least you an dh could do that rather then buying gifts for each other.

Eat at home! Even look into some budget recipes etc to save a few dollars

Christmas gifts for family an friends make cookies or candy an use that as gifts maybe check into some crafty homemade things you could give as gifts.

Pictures are always good too esp family pics I have on occassion when I needed more 8x10's an 5x7's than offered with the cheap package had 2 coupons 2 appointments back to back 1 in my name the other in dh's name. Much cheaper than buying extra pics in a package deal.

Remember it's the little things that adds up those candy bars for afternoon break at work. The magazines at grocery store etc THINK before you buy get DH to do the same along with son if he is old enough to understand. Everytime you want something you don't need an don't buy it put that much money towards the bills or disney visit.

Maybe you an DH can have a contest see who can save the most money

Are there services you now pay to have done that you can do yourselves? Cut back on those.

Watch the ads only buy when things are on sale buy in bulk while items are on sale when it makes sense to do so. Which only works if you paying cash for the extras. Esp helpful with back to school supplies that is usually a good time to buy underwear an socks etc too.

I would also do a budget trip. Search for Discount codes to save money on your resort. Normally themouseforless.com will have them there if there are any available. I have saved a lot of money by doing this. :goodvibes

What I like to do is pick a good TA, book the trip, and then start having my TA take regular payments directly out of my checking acct. via debit card. This way, I can set it up to make a payment on convenient days for me (I get paid twice a month, so I have her make the payments on my paydays so I don't even miss the money).

I like doing it like this b/c it's just like paying a regular bill instead of trying to come up with a huge chunk of $ all at once.

Good luck to you!

Exactly! This is basically what we do. We book a year in advance and have automatically taken out monthly. We don't even miss the money.

No more Dunkin' Donuts trips!!! LOL Saved us a ton. Bring our lunches to work every day. We will grill chicken for caesar salads or sandwichs, cook a roast beef for sandwiches, (I have an electric slicer), bake a ham for sandwiches. Make our own pizzas instead of ordering out. Make our own steak & cheese subs instead of ordering out. I do MyPoints and use the rewards for restaurant gift cards, which we will then use for birthday, anniversary dinners. Otherwise - we don't eat out anymore - we went so much we started to not really enjoy it. Now when we go on vacation - we will splurge and spend more for a better restaurant - like Jiko - and enjoy it a lot more.

I plan menus for the week, and only shop once. Buy the sale items - if TP is on sale - buy it - sooner or later your going to need it. Plan meals around the sale items. If you live near one - use Market Basket. Irving gas seems to be the cheapest around here also. Use a RedBox to rent a movie - or your local library. I stay out of CVS and Walgreens for health and beauty aids - buy generic shampoo at Sally's beauty, deodorant, toothpaste at BJ's with coupons. I use Arbonne skin care - and became a consultant to save 25%.

Have kids?? Give them an allowance - my 12 yo DS gets 12/week - he pays for his cellphone with that, and has walking around money for the corner store. Anything he wants - games, snacks outside the home, movie, etc he needs to buy with that money. He can earn extra doing chores, but he doesn't very often.

I look at saving for Disney as a challenge - and I like winning!!! Half the fun is planning. Good luck.

I don't think I can come up with any better ideas for saving than the PP's! But, our family has gone in January and loved it!

We stayed offsite, which we honestly love doing. It gives us more space, allows us to relax a little more, and cut down on eating out which gets expensive and frankly we get tired of. I also like having a W/D unit in a condo so we can pack light and I can come home with clean clothes instead of a bunch of laundry! I just throw a load in at night when we get back so it's not like a chore.

Anyhow, back to January. It is a great time to go. We have gone during MLK week. That particular holiday is crowded but it thins out a lot later in the week. It was warm enough for DH to wear shorts. I am a little more cold-natured so I wore jeans and a short sleeved or 3/4 length sleeved top. At night a light jacket. It is SO nice to not have the heat and humidity. We feel like we can go longer without becoming exhausted. January or mid-December are definitely my fav times to go to WDW. If you have any particular questions, feel free to ask!

We are talking about going back in January as well, but we just got off our first Disney cruise in April and now I can't decide whether I want to do the parks or another cruise!

My family has a lot of fun saving for our Disney trips. We all get in on it.

First, we set up a separate savings account just for Disney trips. We put money in that account from various things:

1. We called all of our regular "billers" - cable, cell phone, insurance, etc and got on cheaper plans. We saved ourselves $100/month. That money goes directly into the account.

2. I do shopping at Rite Aid where I shop the sales and use coupons to get the items for free. The way their system works is they send you a check at the end of the month. So, I'll spend a little out of pocket each month ( maybe $20) and get a check back for anywhere from $25 - $50 (approximately). That money goes into that account. It averages about $35/month.

3. Any refunds we receive or other money we are reimbursed for anything after we've already paid for the item. For example, we bought a new fridge in January. We were reimbursed for the delivery in March for $65. But, we'd already paid for it and worked it into our budget, so it was found money. We added it to the Disney account. This year we budgeted about $200 for this kind of found cash.

4. Dh is an Episcopal priest. He receives "tips" for performing weddings. Again, it's found money. Straight into the Disney account. This year he has 10 weddings. He receives anywhere from $50 - $500/wedding. Average is around $150.

5. I decided to give up coloring my hair and getting it cut for a while. Every 8 weeks when I would've had it done, I add that money to the account. Same with the kids haircuts - I do them and add that money to the account. So, that's about $50/month. (Dh won't let me cut his yet!)

6. We set a budget for gas/electric/water bills for the house. Anytime we're below that budget, I put the excess into the Disney account. This has gotten the kids involved by turning off lights, using less water, etc, etc, etc. They also don't complain when I keep the heat low in winter and AC high in summer!

We also have two credit cards that earn us rewards (we pay them off each month). One is the Disney Visa. Dh uses that for work purchases for which he is reimbursed. We've budgeted $350 in rewards for our trip next January.

The other credit card is one that gives me cash back. Last year we got $700. This year they changed the program a bit, so I can't tell yet if we'll get that much. But, so far we've earned nearly $400.

The last thing we have is a huge bin where we collect change. This change comes from:

1. returning bottles we find (I don't buy soda)
2. anytime I find free parking somewhere (I look for meters with time left!) I take what I would've spent and stick it in the bin
3. any found money
4. money in the washer/dryer

We collect about $150/year this way! Every little bit counts.

This year we also decided to start living as if dh lost his job. We're buying nothing but the essentials and making what we have last. We've not cut back on the kids' activities which we would if dh actually lost his job though. This has meant we've been able to increase our regular savings account so I feel very comfortable with our planned trip next year!!

Those things above add up to $5120/year. I know we've got some circumstances that not everyone has (dh's job, for example), but certainly there are ways you can do some of these things and add your own! Good luck saving!

Lots of good tips here! I agree with those who said to Eat at Home. That's the name of my blog. Here's a link to Low Cost Meals if you really want to save money of eating.

Good luck with the savings. I hope it pays off in a great vacation for you!

If you want to get pin codes by email or postcards, try these things right away: Register on WDW site for the birthdays of your immediate family members, order the free DVD to be delivered, and price out a trip on the phone with WDW. That way they know you are interested in coming at a certain time of year. Maybe just maybe they will extend the birthday celebration until your son's birthdays in January. I registered our birthdays and received a pin for 40% off of our room during her birthday month. Best of luck!!!

I see that you want the DDP for you trip, if this is not a necessity for you we save a LOT of money by not getting the DDP (but maybe this is your one splurge treat that you really want to do). But without the DDP we never order that much food, and we often split meals and eat cereal in our room etc. to save money and it is much more affordable than the DDP.

Good luck with saving for your trip! Lots of good ideas above :yay:

Maybe you an DH can have a contest see who can save the most money

My DH and I have 'contests' all of the time, and you'd be amazed at the results.

Our last contest was 'Who can find the cheapest Vacation' and just when I thought I was in the lead with Vegas at $1,200, DH swoops in with WDW for MUCH MUCH less.

Coupons, coupons, coupons and combine them with sales. To maximize coupone usage look into joining one of the coupon swaps.

Try to eat at home more and take lunch to work. Snacks also. Snack machines are way overpriced.

Do you get coffee every morning? Try taking it with you also. I'm one to talk, but I'm trying. only my caffine is Coke. I love getting a coke at this one gas station. But at 85 cents it adds up.

Save change.

Save rebate $$.

MyPoints, Inboxdollars, MySurveys and Sunshine Rewards. Mypoints and Mysurveys add up the quickest.

We also have two reward CCs. One is Disney and one is Delta miles. Just make sure you pay them off each month. The rewards do add up and help. Although the Delta Miles just isn't as good as it use to be.

good luck.

Saving change is a big thing for us. Infact sometimes I give the cashier an extra dollar and have her give me 4 quarters back so I can put it in the change container or sometimes I fold up a dollar bill and stuff it in all the change you'd be surprised how many extra "dollars" you will have.

Keep an eye open to see if Disney will continue the freeby for a birthday. Take the gift card over the free entry if you already will have a 7 day ticket. Would save money for things that way. Have you signed up for Mousesaver? Do so if you havent lots of good ideas. Use ME is you can. Around the house unplug anything not in use to cut electic. Lots of good ideas so far here.

All of the ideas I read above are great. One thing that I have started to do recently is sign up for credit cards with great promotions and bank accounts that are offering an incentive for opening an account for a certain amount of time. I have really great credit so I get approved. (WE PAY OFF ALL CC BILLS MONTHLY SO WE DON'T GET INTO TROUBLE). I keep track of all of the money I receive in kickbacks and transfer it or the amount of it into a special account. So far this year, I have received $100 (opening checking account), $75 (another bank account), a $300 gift card from Amex, a $500 gift card from Amex and about $75 DDRD's from referring friends to Disney Visa. (If I get a gift card - I consider that money I can put into savings that I am not spending at Home Depot or wherever I got the GC for.)

I also just signed up for the Discover Miles card. It has a 12,000 mile sign on bonus, plus 1,000 points per month for the first year for each month you make a purchase. That could equal one round trip ticket or $200 credit to my bill when making any travel purchase. My husband will sign up too, which should give us double that for our trip to WDW next year. I check the mymoneyblog.com site for offers like this.

This probably isn't for everyone, but it has been working for me. I hope you get there in January - a birthday at WDW is the best!

Hi:
You mentioned flying out of Boston. Southwest is flying out of Boston soon if not now. Make sure to check the prices out for all three Southwest sites: Providence, RI (not far at all), Manchester and Logan. We have found flights from Providence to be much cheaper than Manchester. January is very nice in Disney. It's so quiet but the weather can be iffy.

Have a great trip!
