Okay, here's the situation...

My roommate is on her bed writhing in pain. She is sobbing it hurts so bad. Her whole right side is throbbing and she is throwing up. This happened last night as well. I took her to the ER. They did cat scans, x rays, you name it, they found nothing. They gave her vicodin but she refuses to take it, she thinks it will upset her stomach worse. I don't know what to do!!!! Do we go back to the ER???? We're just clueless college students, help!!!

Pull out the discharge papers the Emergency people gave you. Somewhere it will say that you should follow up with a doctor and what to do if it comes back (like, return to the ER.)

I would definitely go back. Did the pain go away or has she been in agony since yesterday? Things like appendicitis or ovarian cyst will cause symptoms like you describe and can be hard to diagnose.

Ask for a pyelogram (contrast so you can view the urinary tract). Pain like that could be a kidney stone.

Vicodin isn't codeine (sp?) and is easier on the stomach. She's throwing up anyway, so she should see if she can keep one down. In all likelihood, the pain is causing her nausea and if she can subdue that, she won't be throwing up.

I'm not a doctor, but I have had kidney stone experience.

The pain has been on and off since Sunday morning. I just think she should try the vicodin before we head back to the ER. Granted, I know nothing medical, but doesn't it seem worth a shot?

I wouldn't take anything because it will just mask what could be symptoms of something serious that needs to be treated ASAP. Also, a pain killer like that on an empty stomach will probably make her feel worse not better. Cool-Beans is right about the discharge papers. There's probably a number on there that you can call before heading back to the ER. Make sure you take them with you because they may help her get seen quicker.

take her vicodine and mellow out :teeth: . Also sound slike a kidney stone to me also, I have had them a couple of times

Call her parents and take her back to the hospital. ASAP

I just talked to her mom who told me to tell her "to just wait out the pain and she'll be fine." Her exact words.

Quit reading and take her to the hospital. It could be any number of things. Just remember to tell the doctor that she has eaten spinach. If you have the bag she ate spinach from, take it with you.

Would this be happening if she ate spinach? Because she did...

She'd have cramping, intestinal distress, vomiting and a fever. I don't think she'd be in the kind of pain she's in. Did you mention the spinach to the ER doctor?

Sounds like the symptoms my best friend had when they had e.coli poisoning...

Take her to the ER. Better safe than sorry.

Well, since your friend didn't bother calling a doctor today, and she doesn't want the pills, and her parents don't care...then just let it go.

If she gets sick enough, she'll ask to go to the ER. Or ED. Or EW...whatever term you prefer.

I realize now I am going to sound like an idiot, but no, we didn't mention it last night. I honestly didn't think of it until this minute. Now I am going to cry, I am so scared!

Oh, and she does have a fever.

I'm done, we're off. She is directing me to find the discharge papers and we're going back to the ER. Thanks for the help. Please say a prayer for my roommate if you believe in prayers.

PJ: Isn't there MEDICAL SERVICES there on campus? Take her there NOW!

If not, then I would def take her to the ER!

:grouphug:

P.S. PJ: You are such an awesome roomie!!! Please keep us posted!!!
