I need Dr. DIS! (updated)

Well, since your friend didn't bother calling a doctor today, and she doesn't want the pills, and her parents don't care...then just let it go.

If she gets sick enough, she'll ask to go to the ER. Or ED. Or EW...whatever term you prefer.

Wow, that's kind of cold. I know when I've been in pain like the OP's roommate from a ruptured ovarian cyst I've wished someone would put me out of my misery. I certainly wasn't in any shape to make a rational decision about medical treatment or anything else for that matter. I feel really sad that her parent's don't seem to care. I know that wouldn't be the answer I'd give about my child. She's lucky to have a roommate that cares so much.

I just talked to her mom who told me to tell her "to just wait out the pain and she'll be fine." Her exact words.

her Mom-----> :sad2: you need to get her to the ER

PJ: Isn't there MEDICAL SERVICES there on campus? Take her there NOW!

If not, then I would def take her to the ER!

:grouphug:

P.S. PJ: You are such an awesome roomie!!! Please keep us posted!!!
I know t hat my health services on my campus is only open from 9 to 5 monday through friday.

Oh my, how scary! Please let us know how things turn out!

Thank you all for the suggestions, going back to the ER was by far the right choice. It was apendicitis and she had to have an emergency apendectomy. She is still in the hospital and her parrents are coming into town. I was at the ER until about 3am. On top of this, as I posted last week, I am having hip surgery on Friday. If you're in the Cincinnati area, stay away from our apartment, it's bad luck. Trying to keep a positive outlook...

Good thing you didn't listen to her mother. I hope your friend recovers quickly and your surgery goes well.

Well thank goodness you took her back to the ER! If I was her mother, I would feel terrible. I hope your roommate recovers quickly and your surgery goes well.

I'm glad you didn't listen to a mother who should have known better. Always listen to the DIS, we usually have better advice!

Prayers and :grouphug: to both of you.

That's exactly what I thought it was when I read the first post. So glad you went back. Her mom must be so upset that she wanted her to just WAIT IT OUT.
Best of luck with your surgery!

I bet her mom feels so guilty. I wonder why in the world she wasn't thinking it was serious with these symptoms? Maybe the fact she'd already been to ER and sent home made her think it wasn't serious. Whatever it was I have a feeling this Mama will be feeling very guilty for a long, long time.

OMG..PJ: You are her HERO!!! What if you were not there to take her to the ER!!!!!! That is just so serious!!!!! BRAVO FOR YOU!!! You are the BEST roomie ever (as I posted earlier)!!!!!

:grouphug: to roomie for a speedy recovery.

:cheer2: for you, PJ, as the best roomie.

:grouphug: Thank you so much, that is so sweet. I don't want to think about what would have happened if we didn't go. The doctor said the appendix would have ruptured and she would have gotten an infection and could have died. Very, very scary.

I just now read this whole thread and my very first thought was appendix!
Those were the exact symptoms I had!

She is very lucky to have such a great roommate.
I don't know what on earth that mother was thinking.

ThankGOD - she didnt take the vicodin and mask her pain!!!

Glad to hear she's gonna be well!

It's not just the coconuts mom (I know if I had received that call I'd have been in the car to my son), has anyone wondered why in the world the young lady was discharged the first time when she was in obvious distress? The symptoms seemed to very clearly indicate an appendix. . . :confused3 The lack of care on the first ER visit is most disturbing--good thing you listened to your DIS pals.

In defense (sort of) of the Mom, her child had already been seen in the ER and sent home with pain meds--her mistake was trusting the diagnosis (or lack thereof) and care received. Thankfully, you are a great roommate and wouldn't settle for the original advice. Your roommie is very lucky!
