OK, I decided I want a tattoo, and I finally decided where. (inside of my wrist) I wanted to get something to represent my 3 kids, but lately I have been thinking about something regarding strength. I battle panic and depression and I want something to remind me of how strong I can be, so during the bad times I can have a visual reminder that I can get through it.
I also have Scandinavian ancestors and I like the Celtic symbols.

Right now all I can come up with is the word "strength" across my wrist. Anyone more creative that me?

Wouldn't a symbol of your kids also give you strength? Maybe you can intertwine their names or initals into a celtic knot or symbol

:confused3

Scroll down, on the right side of the page is a three pointed celtic knot. Also, I'd do a google search for celtic jewelry, you may be able to get some ideas. I think the idea of a knot involving 3 sections or points for your kids would be awesome. :thumbsup2

I did something similar when I was going through some REALLY hard stuff last year. I got a star on each arm (below my elbow on my forearm). one pink, one blue for each kid.

I love the idea of a celtic knot

I hope you find what you're looking for.
I want a tattoo also and I know EXACTLY what I want, even if I don't know exactly what it's going to look like. DH would shoot my butt if I got one though.

My thoughts were a celtic knot as well. Because there is no start or finish, it makes the bond stronger.

For strength, perhaps some kind of celtic chain surrounding the knot?

How about the Chinese symbol for strength, and then an animal that you think of as being strong. I have a Panda and the chinese symbol of strength (along with bamboo and a cherry tree) on my lower back, and the whole picture its a sign of strength for me. I got it a day before my 28th b-day.... it made it feel like my 21st b-day!!!

Cool! So the inside of your wrist, eh? I want a cougar tattoo for starters. My DH is 2 yrs younger....:rotfl:

I just don't know where.

I was just playing Okami on Wii....lots of symbols of strength out there.

Don't know if you like the Asian symbols as well. I am not familiar with Celtic symbols.

I also like the history of women (European/American), as in Jane Austen, Alice Paul, Beatrix Potter, etc...
As a teacher I am sure you may be familiar with that.

For me, that is a source of strength. I am reading Austen and 18th Century European history.

It is so personal so I am sure I am not much help. ;)

I like the celtic knot as well.

I have a tat on the inside of my left wrist. It's visible...so make sure it's something you can look at for the rest of your life! ;)

Agreed. I really wanted wrist tattoos instead but decided that up a little higher i COULD cover them with a long sleeved shirt or jacket if I needed to. (I haven't found a need..people at church can kiss it :P )

i would wait until you find something that speaks to you. it's cool i guess to try to get ideas from people on here but in the end it needs to mean something to you. i would wait until you personally see something that hits you and makes you realize it's the symbol that represents you. just my $0.02. good luck.

Most of mine can be hidden. I think it's important to remember when getting one, if you feel comfortable with showing them off!

Since you are "brainstorming";) ....here is something that I am drawn to recently. Maybe this will help you jar something that you are drawn too.

I am reading about Beatrix Potter. Her history is very interesting and even though she was barred from the scientific community because she was a women, she had her impact anyway.

She also has a wonderful array of characters to choose from for a tattoo. The symbolism for me is the strength of women through the centuries.
Instead of a cougar, I could get something there. Have to think about it.;)
I have been thinking about a tattoo for 5yrs+. Haven't done it yet....

Scientific aspirations and work on fungi
When Potter came of age, her parents appointed her their housekeeper and discouraged any intellectual development, instead requiring her to supervise the household. From the age of 15 until she was past 30, she recorded her everyday life in journals, using her own secret code which was not decoded until 20 years after her death. [2]
An uncle attempted to introduce her as a student at the Royal Botanic Gardens at Kew, but she was rejected because she was female. Potter was later one of the first to suggest that lichens were a symbiotic relationship between fungi and algae.[3] As, at the time, the only way to record microscopic images was by painting them, Potter made numerous drawings of lichens and fungi. As the result of her observations, she was widely respected throughout England as an expert mycologist. She also studied spore germination and life cycles of fungi. Potter's set of detailed watercolours of fungi, numbering some 270 completed by 1901, is in the Armitt Library, Ambleside.
In 1897, her paper on the germination of spores was presented to the Linnean Society by her uncle Sir Henry Enfield Roscoe, as women were barred from attending meetings. (In 1997, the Society issued a posthumous official apology to Potter for the way she had been treated.) The Royal Society also refused to publish at least one of her technical papers. She also lectured at the London School of Economics several times.

I have a tattoo . It was my 30th birthday mid-life crisis tattoo. its a rose on my left shoulder.

I think its cool and I love mine, but be very certain of where you want it placed.

When I got mine I had no kids and it didn't matter who or what seen it. Now 10 years later I have 2 kids and live in an uppity community., You don't know what the future holds and tats are permenant. Be very choosey and take your time with both the design, placement and who does the work.

Good Luck

How about the celtic symbol of Motherhood? It's got 3 parts- representing your 3 kids..

That site has some other good ideas! I will keep searching and if I find something I will edit.

I like the 4th one down. Hmmmm, maybe......

I like the celtic knot as well.

Yes, I know! That is why I was thinking about a word, like just the word "strength" or something. Nothing has spoken to me yet.

What about symbols that represent each child..tied together somehow.

I considered a tattoo once (and have since decided against any more tattoos for a while) for my Grandma..I was going to have something like a violin (she played) somehow tied to a ring (grandpa was a jeweler) kwim?

In January I was going through some rough times.
I got this tattoo
DSCN0433.jpg

Then in Novemeber I got 2 stars in my ears for ear of my boys.

This is one celtic representation of strength. A celtic tree of life would be very nice too. It depends on how big you want to get.
