I need a rugged kids shoe that won't break the bank...

Keens. I left my grandson's in the garden all winter last year. They were as good as new. We live in Indiana. Snow, ice, rain etc all winter. Mud, grime, etc. and they were like new.
I got them on ebay for $30.

Keens 100%. My kids have been wearing them for years. They wear the Newport H2 or Venice H2. I just got my daughter a pair on 6pm.com for 25.50 shipped. Reg. $50.00 w/o shipping! I wasn't able to find any for my son on sale, so I sucked it up and did full price. But...his last pair he went through 2 summers in them before they were too small, and because I got my ds's for 50% off, it leveled out. If they never went on sale, I would still buy them. They are unbeatable.

Be careful, the Sunport look just like the Newport but the top is plastic-like, unless that is something you don't mind. Those are cheaper I believe, too.

Was just popping on here to ask about the Sunsport. I did end up getting it b/c it was practically half price. So we can try them out and get the Newports a bit later. I could find Newports only for $50.

What do you mean "plastic like"?

I hope we didn't make a mistake. But since I have to order on-line...I figured the less expensive model was a good starter shoe.

My kids wear Merrills. A little pricey, but my kids definately outgrown them long before they wear out.

Their shoes do take a beating. We may live in northern VA, but we play in WV. My kids spend lots of weekends and most of the summer on a farm, in the woods, or in a canoe.

Mom of 5, 2 VERY active boys. Not cheap, but GEOX sneakers have always gone the distance - they've always been outgrown before falling apart. They usually get 2 pairs, a GEOX and a generic, and the GEOX looks brand new by the time they're outgrown - the cheapie is falling apart. Ds12 no longer wears them, and no longer "lets" ds8 get them (fashion police), but they were great!

Another GEOX fan here. They hold up great to lots of abuse.

I have also had some bad experience with Skeetchers. I would not buy them again. Very poorly made.
We have had good luck with Stride Rite (and New Balance) and find great prices at the Stride Rite outlet store near us.
