Well, about 7 years ago i was diagnosed with polycystic kidney disease.....

Last month I was in the hospital for 10 days with an infection and the PKD has progressed to the point where I am now on the transplant list....

I have not started dialysis yet..but it will most likely be soon....

My dear sis is being tested to see if she can donate...

It is overwhelming.....

any good thoughts/prayers will be appreciated...

Nothing I can say is more adequate than a hug.

I will definitely keep you in my thoughts and prayers.. My stepdaughter's stepson needed a kidney transplant and luckily her DH was a perfect match..

Do you have other family members who can be tested as well?

That's has to be so overwhelming for you..

I do have others willing to be tested... they will only test one person at a time and the transplant doc felt dear sis would be best one to start with...

I think it is harder on my Dh... I am just kind of going with the flow...in a way.... doing what dr suggests..but it really is in Gods hands....

My dh had a kidney transplant this past December. Our son was the donor. He had to go on dialysis just 2 weeks prior to his transplant, which made him even more thankful he was scheduled for the transplant. His recovery time was amazing. The recovery is actually harder on the donor, even though they usually retrieve the kidney laproscopically they have to cut through muscle which makes the first few days painful for the donor. DH just recently had his 4 month check up and they said things go so much smoother when they are able to have a live donor for the kidney transplant. He is down to just 2 lab visits a month, to make sure his meds are at the proper level. Will pray that your sister will be able to be your donor. What an honor to have her willing to make that sacrifice. Will be praying for both of you that the testing will go quickly and she will be approved and that you are able to get the surgery scheduled prior to having to go on dialysis.

Hope all goes well with you.

My mom was on dialysis for the last 6-7 months of her life. She was not a good candidate for transplant either. Luckily, she was able to use the Freedom machine and do her dialysis at home and go on with her life.

Carol, I think, if your sister is able to give, it will be a gift for her, too. I think it would be an amazing feeling to know you've done this for someone you love.

My former principal and most of his siblings had polycystic kidney disease. He had gotten to the point of need dialysis, and after a couple of family members that were tested were rejected due to pre-existing medical conditions, one of our co-workers gave him one of her kidneys. It really says something about a boss that an employee will literally give him a part of herself to keep him around!

It's been about 2 1/2 years, and they are both doing great! Of course, he has to stay on anti-rejection drugs the rest of his life and there are certain activities he has to avoid, but other than that, he has gotten his life back. In fact, he is so active that he retired last year, much to our disappointment. He was a great principal, and we are all so thankful that he got such a gift. My co-worker says that she forgets sometimes that she even did it until someone brings it up. She said it was no big deal for her to recover from whatsoever, and she encourages others to consider it as well.

She was inspired to do it by my principal's wife, who had donated her "spare" kidney to her husband's sister several years prior when her health had deteriorated due to PKD. I always thought it was incredibly selfless for her to give her kidney to her sister-in-law when she knew that her husband would be needing one eventually. Both these women are an inspiration to all who know them.

Good luck to you, OP. If the first person tested doesn't pan out, don't lose hope. Our principal said that his doctor told him not to worry about if people are a match, just find someone willing to donate a kidney. Apparently finding a match isn't that big of an issue anymore with all the drugs they have.

My best friends husband has PKD and had his transplant 2 years ago July, his sister was his match. Good luck and prayers to you!!
