So, apparently we had a reservation for this coming weekend in anticipation of running the WDW Marathon.

We're not running the marathon and completely forgot about the ressie. I found it when I was online checking out some other upcoming vacations.

I understand that the points go into holding but I have to use them by Feb 28 of this year? There's no way we can put together a trip that fast.

Is there any way a DVC supervisor can override this to give us some more time? Will crying help my situation???????

If your use year is MArch, then yes, the points will expire on 2/28/2011.

If you do not cancel the reservation prior to check in day, all the points will be forfeited at that time.

I do not think there is anything that MS can do for you, but in your situation I would ask.

You might try posting the reservation on the Rent/Trade Board and trying to rent it. Perhaps if you list it with a "fire sale" price, someone will take it since Marathon weekend is a popular time.

The only other choices I can think of are:

* Try to rent a reservation for someone that wants to visit before 2/28/2011.
* Ask MS about doing a late deposit to RCI. (You may have to add some points to the holdiong points to get the minimum needed for a trade, so think that over carefully to avoid throwing good points after bad if you think you won't be able to use the RCI option). There will be restrictions on what you can trade for, but you will have longer to put together a trip.

Good luck!

Usually you are granted a ONE time "Dang I screwed UP" fix. It won't hurt to call and ask.

That's generally reserved for banking mistakes. I do not recall ever reading it was granted to fix a late cancellation. But it doesn't hurt to try.

NOTE: Duplicate threads were merged.

Oh.....My.....Goodness.....

Cristina at Member Services is our savior!!!!! The first CM I spoke to when first realizing this problem, was all "you're out of luck" Upon further thinking, I called back and got Cristina and immediately asked for a supervisor. She asked me my problem, I explained, she put me on hold and came back the following solution:

They basically gave us a year extension on the points that would've been used on our forgotten ressie. We had to forfeit 19 points b/c those were banked '09 points but they banked the remaining into '11.

We now have until Feb 28, 2012 to use 221 points. They were unable to apply them to our two existing reservations.

The fun now begins of finding time to use them. We'll probably have to plan something for summer but are not picky about size or location (and we'll take CA or FL). Or maybe Marathon Weekend 2012. Or the other alternative would be to "gift" the reservation to someone else.

A little scary to have this opportunity in front of us, but nonetheless BETTER THAN THE ALTERNATIVE.

I heart DVC.

I could be wrong, but I think that canceling the ressie now would render the points completely useless. I believe if they go into a holding account, they can't be used for 60 days which would put you into March.

If I were you, I would try to call and get it changed, though this is unlikely. Then if that doesn't work, post the reservation and see if you can at least get your MF's out of it. Also, check with your friends (particularly the ones without kids since it would be easier to do an impromptu vacation).

Good Luck

No, that is incorrect. Holding points must be used for reservations within 60 days of your calling. They could be used for a reservation for tomorrow if there was availability.

You got some extra big pixie dust OP. Congratulations!!

I am going to keep this thread copied in my inbox as a reference in case I have to ask for something similar.

I am surprised they allowed this as many members with numerous reservations and/or waitlists probably make the same mistakes when planning multiple trips at one time.

Good to be able to refer to this scenario in the future.

Maybe a summer reservation at Hilton Head? It's a nice relaxing place to spend time.

That's a nice idea, but I thought summer at HHI was nearly impossible to get if you don't own there. I guess it would be worth a try though! You never know!

Congrats! :) We once had a scheduling blunder also! Had to cancel a ressie and put the points in holding, but it was right at the end of the use year. The original Member Services rep told me there was nothing they could do and I was out of luck. I asked to speak to a supervisor and they granted me my one time "out of jail" card! :)

Hi OP,
Happy MS was able to work some magic for you. I hope I never make a "huge mistake" that needs fixing.
But great to know it is possible.
Happy planning
Kerri

Nobody is upset about this? I think it's wrong to grant someone an extra year because they screwed up. Maybe I should "screw up" this year so I can get an extra year out of my points. Unbelievable.
toesmom, I'm also saving this thread as a reference. If they grant it to one person they have to grant it to all. :sad2:

Basically, they gave you the "once in a lifetime super special banking deal" that we have heard of others getting when they goofed up banking. Unfortunately, you didn't goof up your banking....you goofed up your reserving. I'm not sure how I feel about this. I would probably have tried to rent the existing reservation when I discovered the issue. Of course, I'd likely not have the issue in the first place, because I check my points and reservations online often to make sure nothing has suddenly disappeared. I would recommend you do the same in the future.

I'm glad you were able to save (most of) your points, but it is unfortunate and a bit unfair that a room may go unoccupied during such a popular time of year.

FWIW, I don't begrudge the 'late banking' so much, if at all- but overriding the "holding" restrictions does bother me to some extent. The really short notice (less than a week?) cancellation may well have prevented someone from using points for a room they wanted so IMHO that is less than ideal for the DVC community as a whole...

Hopefully you won't get in a situation like this again in the future! :thumbsup2

Why should I be upset because the OP got a little pixie dust? I, for one, am happy for her.

I'm always open to gifts. :rolleyes1

Its nice to hear that things worked out so well for you. Hope you dont get too many negative responses to your post.

I understand where you are coming from on this one and not sure exactly how I feel.

For the OP, I am excited and happy that she was able to save her points. But, on the other hand, as much as we would all like to know that if we mess up, we can possibly get a supervisor to fix it, what does it do to the system?

And, if I was someone who had not a similar situation or lost points recently and read this, I probably would feel a bit miffed.

I think it is fine line to walk. I am a rule follower (maybe the teacher in me) and am okay when they break the rules, but only if they put out consistent policies for it.

I just don't know if I want, even though it could benefit me some day, a system that allows for pixiedust based on chance and luck of the draw in terms of the supervisor you get.
