I love the self-checkout lanes at Walmart

Why? Because while ALL the other customers are using them and getting bogged down (and waiting for an employee to come help them finally check out), I can go to a regular lane with a checker and not have to wait in line :teeth:.

I myself hate these self checkout lanes. I think they take even longer as it always seems that an employee has to come over and "fix" whatever went wrong.

I refuse to use them.

Every time an employee at a store with self checkout lanes tries to steer me towards them, I just ask how much of a discount I'm getting by checking myself out. They usually leave me alone after that.

I love the self checkout lanes, and never have any problem with them, but usually use them because I don't want to have to deal with the people there, so it pisses me off when someone comes over and starts bagging my food and talking to me there, it is like, hello, I am using this lane for a reason, leave me alone!

:crazy2: I hate Walmart's self-checkouts. They are awful and everytime I use them all of the checkouts are having issues. It takes forever to get any help. Kmart's are aweful too. The only self-checkouts that are worth a crap at Krogers. I don't know if they use different software or what. If there is a problem the employees just override it at their station instead of coming over and wasting a bunch of time. At Kroger they are more convenient, anywhere else they are a pain and I avoid them.

I agree - Kroger's do seem to work well so I will use them there. I don't plan to ever use them again at Walmart. I've just been too frustrated by them. Kroger's machines don't seem to be so "sensitive" and will let you continue scanning after a few seconds of supposed trouble. Plus they always have a worker right there watching all the self-checkouts.

I'm glad they work for you, Alisha. You must be a better scanner than I am :).

Our Walmart doesn't have them but the grocery store does. Only under two conditions will I use them - first, I must have less than 10 items none of which can be heavier than a box of cereal (the moving treadmill will stop otherwise) and I must have cash to pay because checks & credit cards require the store employees to verify and check me out anyway. The grocery employees seem to dislike them even more than the customers, lol.

I have used them at several stores, grocery, Home Depot. No piss nor crap, they seem fine for me, I like them.

I've only used them at my grocery store and LOVE them. The only problem I've had was with buying greeting cards. They were so light that the sensor didn't know that I had put it in the bag. It kept telling me to "Please place item in the bag" before it would let me move on.

I had the same problem with Wal Mart self checkers, usually with bulky fashion magazines since they never seen to understand those

We need to get Snoopy on this thread...:jester:

I would say you're lucky to have a Walmart with self checkout. Only Krogers and Meijers here. Self checkouts are great for discreetly buying those embarassing things like antifungal spray, my wife's feminine hygiene stuff ..... I can't remember the name of the movie where the guy buys maxi pads and the checkout person goes on the intercom for a price check.

I love the slef check out lanes! I use them in home depot and the supermarket! I can do a better job at ringning myself up than some of the people who work there. Half the time I can't understand what the heck they are saying, other times they are busy chatting with the cashier next to them....I would rather do it myself...even with paying by credit or debit you just stick the card in, no need for help from anyone, sign the electronic pad and your are off.

I HATE the ones at WalMart! They NEVER work! The ones at the local Stop & Shop grocery stores are OK. I use them if I have a few items, or if, like orvilleair, I am buying an "embarrassing" item.

My husband hates them for 2 resons:
1. They are taking jobs away from people
2. You don't get a discount for checking yourself out

They were so light that the sensor didn't know that I had put it in the bag. It kept telling me to "Please place item in the bag" before it would let me move on.
I have a friend who uses self checkout all the time. He told me once that with light items you have to press down a little with your fingers in the bottom of the bag so it registers that you have bagged an item.

Supposedly the cost per checkout for stores is $15 per customer.
I guess they are calculating the hourly wage of the employee (cashier) in this figure.
However, when you go to Home Depot and buy something that has been marked down ie: a gallon of Oops paint that has been marked down to $5.00 the scanner at the self checkout won't let the paint scan for the low price and an employee has to come over anyway.
The BJs that have them are a nightmare as well with the heavier items. I honestly think it takes longer for self checkouts.

MR.MOM was the name of the movie when Michael Keaton tries to buy the "Kotex, 5 cents off" ::yes::

I HATE the ones at Wal-Mart.
"please remove items from bagging area"
"please put item in bagging area"

over and over and over...I finally start yelling at the machine...IT IS IN THE BAGGING AREA!!!

the ones at our local grocery store (stop and shop) are MUCH better...the wal-mart ones are just a crock...if I have ONE thing to buy - fine - but sometimes, it's just not worth the effort.

I never thought of it that way Krista. While all those poor people queue up for the self-checkout registers, the good old fashioned lanes do tend to empty out. Good observation.

I used the self-checkout lane exactly once. When I had one item. I figured that I couldn't screw things up that badly with one item. Perhaps it helped that I worked in a grocery store during high school because I managed to buy my one item and make it out of the store without setting off any alarms. I don't plan to press my luck however.
