I Love the Little Fishies. Don't You?

Yes, the pun was unintentional, but it does work.

We stayed at the Holiday Inn Port of Miami/ Downtown. We stayed there before our cruise on the Magic in December and loved it. I have noticed that most American hotels seem to allocate rooms for people who have not arrived at around 16:00. We have arrived at a number of hotels after this and were assured that we had already checked in only to then been told that they allocated our room at that time. I think they were probably gutted that their Family of the Day did not roll in until midnight.

Hi Corinna,

Looking forward to to the cruise days. We stayed at the Holiday Inn as well, I think we were on the 6th floor facing a white brick wall. I had been thinking of you with your view room, sorry you didn't get it.

Whew! Thank goodness they were able to fly you to Miami that night. Very cool that the pilot came in from home. I wonder what kind of bonus they get when that happens.

One suitcase each at almost the weight limit does not lend much room for souvenirs! :)

Glad you were able to find the book :)

I don't think the pilot would have got any bonus. As I understand it the roster for pilots and cabin crew is made up of flights that they are definitely doing and times were they are on call. Most of the time, they will not be called, but will still be paid for those times as if they had. Every now and again they will be needed.

Yes, it did have a bit of an effect on what I can bring back, but I had the souvenirs that I wanted to bring back planned out in advance and they all fit in my carry on and my personal item.

I am glad that I got the book yet. This was hands down the best of the series, but quite dark. I am not sure if I would still classify this as a children's book.

Welcome on board. I will post the installment for the first day of the cruise tomorrow.

What a shame about your view. Our view was actually quite nice, but we were just too low down to see the port.

your journey sounded very stressful, glad you made it tho:thumbsup2

Welcome on board. As already Shakespeare said: "All is well that ends well."

Corinna

Pity you weren't given an upgrade when you could really appreciate it but still nice.

Looking forward to you boarding the ship.

Off to a great start. Sounds like JFK is finally getting their act together. I'm glad American came through and got you to Miami!

Can't wait to read more!

Welcome on board. I had wondered where you were and was planning to send you a PM in a bit.

Corinna

It's been a busy couple of weeks with half term & Molls A Level exams :scared1:

Been really looking forward to your TR and eagerly awaiting the next instalment

Welcome on board. The upgrade was nice even though we did not spend much time in the room.

Welcome on board. I could not fault JFK or American on this trip.

Oh yes, I can remember this time of year from when I was still teaching. In my case it was Common Entrance and scholarship exams and then later SATs that kept me hopping.

A few pictures from the trip. Lots of leg room, no seat in front and the ability to look straight down, not quite so sure about that one.

This was another aircraft, I am sure it was much further away than it looked.

This was I think almost our plane until the wings fell off :-0

Day 2

Despite the late night, I was awake at 5:00 in the morning. I checked out the view, but as I had feared, I could not actually see the port. That was a real shame as this would be roughly the time the Wonder would have arrived. As I was awake anyway, I decided to take care of some business. I knew that I had a couple of packages waiting at the hotel. When we arrived, I was simply too tired to ask for them. So I put on some clothes and headed downstairs. When I asked at reception, I was advised that the concierge desk deals with packages and they would be in at 7:00. I went back upstairs and actually managed to go back to sleep.

At 6:45, we were both awake. We decided that we may as well get up and have a shower. I got ready and while Graham was doing the same, I headed back downstairs to get my packages. By then it was just gone 7:00, but there was still nobody there. I went back to our room. Once Graham was ready, we decided to go for a wander. I wanted to pick up some wine and was also hoping to get some Dove Promises Peanut Butter Chocolates. I had printed out directions to the closest Walgreens. Graham fancied the walk and decided to come along.

The walk to Walgreens was pretty straightforward and actually shorter than I had expected. It was already pretty warm that early in the morning. We managed to get a couple of huge bottles of Moscato and I also managed to get a bottle of sparkling wine for a Tiara and Champagne event that we had planned for the cruise. I had a look in the chocolate aisle to see if they had the Dove Promises Peanut Butter Chocolates, but they had every variety of the Dove Promises Chocolates apart from the one I was looking for. I had also realized that I had forgotten my sun hat at home. I had bought this at Walgreens in Orlando and decided to get a new one. I did not have any luck. They just had a few baseball caps. We paid for our wine and then headed back towards the hotel. On the way, we had seen a CVS and I know that they are a stockist for Dove Promises Chocolates. So I decided to check this out on the way back. Not only did they have the Dove Promises Peanut Butter Chocolates, but they were also on special offer so I got two bags. They also had sun hats. Unfortunately they did not have any elastic to keep them in place, but we figured we would sort this out somehow. With chocolates and sun hat taken care of, we headed back to the hotel.

By the time we got back to the hotel, we were definitely ready for some breakfast. Our last meal was just a distant memory by that time. We headed to the hotel restaurant. We had the choice between the a la carte menu and the buffet. We both went with the buffet. We had coffee and orange juice to start with and some fresh fruit. I also had a couple of mini Danish Pastries. We then had some hot food. I had Scrambled Eggs, Sausages and Breakfast Potatoes. Graham had the same, but also had French Toast and Bacon. He finished his meal with a muffin. I had discovered some Fruit Punch on the buffet and tried some of this, which was rather nice. When we had finished our breakfast, we paid and headed up to our room.

When we got upstairs, I remember that I still had not collected my packages. So I headed downstairs again. When we had gone up, we had shared the lift with a Bellman. The same Bellman was on the lift going down. He made a comment if I was leaving already. I explained that I had some packages to pick up. He knew precisely what I was talking about and asked me if I was Mrs. Ball. I confirmed this and he asked me to follow him. I had my packages a few moments later. I went back to the room and inspected my treasures. I had our door spotter and some jewellery sent to the hotel. I very much liked everything. We also had to rearrange our luggage a little and spent some time just chilling. I had planned to sort out a few things online, but the Internet was so patchy that I just sent two quick emails and then gave up.

Just before 10:00, I started to get antsy. I knew that there was a ship nearby and I finally wanted to see the Wonder. Graham suggested that we could walk to the port and I agreed happily enough. If this meant that we could leave right then, this was fine by me. We went downstairs to check out. We had to wait for a couple of lifts to come and go as they were full, but eventually a lift came and had room for us. Check out was very quick and we were on our way. The road leading the port was pretty much right across from our hotel and the port is only 0.8 miles away from the hotel. So that seemed easy enough. Unfortunately the walkway over the bridge was the other side of the road and there was no obvious way to get across, as this is a very busy road. So we turned around and walked back to the main road. Just as we got there, a taxi approached and we flagged it down. On the way, I got my first look at the Wonder. It turned out to be a blessing that we could not walk. The bridge across the port is pretty steep and would not have been much fun with our luggage. Five minutes later we were at the port.

We ended up there way too early. People were still coming off the ship. There were a lot of taxis and shuttles around and our taxi driver had to pull up in the arrivals area. Still, a porter was there before we even got out of the taxi and took our luggage away. We found somewhere to sit, which was about half way between the arrivals and departure area. There were however plenty of people around that had arrived earlier still. I left Graham with the hand luggage and went off to see if I could see some familiar faces. There were a number of people on the cruise that we have sailed with before. I spotted two people that we had sailed with before and also spoke to some people who recognized me from Facebook. I spent a little while chatting and we took a group photo and then I re-joined Graham. After this, I checked every now and again if the doors had been opened. Eventually they were and I signaled Graham to join me.

In December, I took a long time to actually get into the building. This time round, this was much smoother. They just checked passports and then they directed us to the escalators. Security looked awful as the line came back onto itself and then looped around the escalators. Graham was joking that this was a typical Disney hidden line. Still, this moved very quickly. We also met some more people from the Facebook group. Graham was teasing me about his 20-minute rule. On the rare occasion that he joins me in the parks, he will not wait for longer than 20 minutes in any line. Well, I did not have to worry. From first getting in line to enter the building to being through security, it took just under 20 minutes.

Things had slightly changed since December. At that time, the first set of check in desks stated Concierge and Platinum Castaway Club Members. This time it just said Concierge. So I asked a member of port staff where the Platinum check in was and was directed right to the other end. The only thing that was there was the Youth Activities registration. Another member of port staff realized that we were looking lost and asked if she could help. I explained what we were looking for and she sent us back to where we had come from. When I told her that we had come from there and had been sent in this direction, she walked us over. It turned out that there was another line between the Concierge check in and the normal check in and that was for Platinum Castaway Club Members. If this was marked in any way, I never saw it. Still, we were in the right place now and as soon as we approached the line, we were called forward to a check in desk. Check in was fairly smooth, but they had to update our nationality manually. We were given boarding number 1, which surprised me, as there were quite a few Platinum Members on the cruise. The person checking us in then tried to give us silver lanyards, but when I pointed out that ours should be black, she went to get the correct ones. We had one of the old lanyards and one of the new soft ones. I claimed that and I have to say I rather like it.

There is quite limited seating at the terminal in Miami and it gets congested really quickly. Graham found himself a quiet corner on the floor where he was in nobody's way and he had a pillar that he could lean against. I left my stuff with him and went to see if any of the characters were about. Captain Mickey was in the character spot and he did not have much of a line. So I went to see him. I don't think I have ever been so glad to see a mouse. I gave him a big hug and we had some photos taken together. I had a look around if I could spot some familiar faces and met a few people from the Facebook group. I headed back to Graham and he had some company by then. We all chatted for a while and then I decided to check if Minnie was around. She had just replaced Mickey and I got in line, which was a bit longer than Mickey's line had been. I was nearly at the front of the line when the Family of the Cruise was announced. I started to panic as they normally call boarding group 1 straight after. I decided that Graham would wait for me and I would only be a couple more minutes. I got a nice hug from Minnie and we had some photos taken and I headed back to where Graham was. By that time the whole area between the character spot, the access to the ship and the area near where Graham sat was shoulder-to-shoulder people. I had a bit of a struggle to get back to Graham.

When I got back, they still had not called boarding group 1. That happened shortly afterwards. This left us with a bit of a dilemma: How are we going to get to the boarding area? Graham had a clever idea. Right next to where he was sitting, a queuing area had been set up. I am not sure what this was meant to be for, but it was not in use. The other end was right opposite the escalator up to the gangway. He suggested we cut through there, which we did. This worked like charm. At the other end, we just had to squeeze past half a dozen people to get to the area where they checked the boarding cards. We were on our way. We went up a level and got directed straight to a photographer for our embarkation photo. Then we headed towards the gangway. There was a bit of a line for the terminals were they swipe you in and then again to actually get on the ship. I think a lot of people must have bypassed the embarkation photo. Still, it was not too long until we were on board.

The one drawback with the Port of Miami is that you get on the ship on deck 4. They still announce you and you do get on midship, but it is just not the same as walking into the atrium on deck 3. We headed straight to Parrot Cay and were seated pretty much straightaway. We ended up at a table next to a family that I knew from a previous cruise so we spent most of lunch chatting. Both of us were not really hungry. Normally we do not have breakfast on the day we board. Still, we had late dinner so we had some lunch. Graham had Salad and Peel and Eat Shrimp followed by Roast Beef and Steamed Vegetables and some Raspberry and White Chocolate Mousse for dessert. I had Chilled Pineapple and Coconut Soup followed by Pork Schnitzel, Mashed Baked Potato, Corn Dog Nuggets and Spaghetti and Meatballs. This sounds like a lot of food, but I had just a tiny taste of everything. I passed on dessert. There was nothing that really called out to me.

By the time we had finished lunch, it was nearly 13:30, which is the time the staterooms are normally available. Graham settled down in one of the big portholes on Route 66 and I went to check if the stateroom corridors were open yet. They were not and I rejoined Graham. As our stateroom was on deck 2 forward, I checked once more if we could get in yet and once the barriers had been removed, I went to get Graham. We met our stateroom host and had a quick look around the cabin and then we decided a nap was called for. The adventures of the previous day had caught up with us. I set a wake up call for me for 14:45 and we both settled down to sleep.

It was nice to hear Mickey on the phone so early in the cruise. I only got about an hour of sleep, but that was all I needed. This made all the difference. I quickly got freshened up and then I headed to our DIS/ Facebook Group Meet. I was hoping to meet some people that I knew from previous cruises and I also had to pick some things up. Somebody from our group had kindly made lanyard badges as a gift for everybody. Somebody else organized some fantastic group t-shirts. I had prepaid ours by PayPal and needed to pick them up. I managed to get those things and managed to catch up with quite a few people. This was probably the busiest meet I have experienced on any of our cruises.

I decided to head back to the cabin a bit earlier than I would normally have done after the meet. I had left Graham asleep when I left and I figured I better made sure that he was awake in time for the safety drill. I got back a little earlier than I had planned. I decided to put up our decorations. I was particularly proud of our magnets this time round and as I had issues with getting them to stick on the Wonder last year, I had bought extra strength magnet tape. Unfortunately this did not work. The magnets did not stick to the outside of the door at all. I ended up putting them all on the inside of our door. It was kind of sad coming back to an empty door, but at least I got to enjoy our magnets when I was inside our cabin. I also had our door spotter that I hang from our fish so I had at least something to mark our territory. Once everything was decorated, I woke up Graham so that he could get ready for the safety drill.

Our muster station was inside the Walt Disney Theater. I was kind of surprised that we were directed towards the elevator lobby and the main staircase during the safety drill to get to our muster station as we were about as far forward as we could be and there was a Crew Member only door that led to the Walt Disney Theater right across from our cabin. Later in the cruise, I had a look at the instructions at the back of the door and we should have used the Crew Only door. One would think that they would show us the proper route during the safety drill. The drill itself was quite straightforward. Near the entrance of the Walt Disney Theater, a crewmember touched our Key to the World Cards against a reader and we were directed to a section of seats in the theatre. There we waited for a while until some announcements were made and we were dismissed. The whole process took just under 15 minutes and was definitely one of the smoother safety drills that we have experienced. Once it was over, we waited until the people who were in a mad rush had left and then we headed back to the cabin. Graham got changed into his swim stuff and I grabbed my camera. In the end I did not even use it. We went up to deck 9. We stayed forward and I was really surprised that we could not hear anything from the sail away party. I stayed up there until I had heard the horn. This was followed by an announcement by the Captain that we were not quite ready to leave, as we still had to wait for more food to be brought on board. I figured in this case, I may as well go back inside. I went back to the cabin to drop off the camera and pick up my autograph book and pens. My suitcase had arrived when I went for the meet, but Graham's suitcase was also there now so I put this inside and headed off to meet some characters.

Captain Mickey was due out at 17:15 and he did not have much of a line. So I went to say "hi" to him again. Pretty much as soon as I had joined the line, somebody approached me to say "hi". It was Drew, a member of entertainment staff that I had become quite friendly with on previous cruises. I always suspected that he is a rather special friend of Pluto. He once referred something that only three individuals could have known: Pluto, his female escort and me. It was great to see him again and we spent a couple of minutes chatting. At the time it did not sink in that the outfit had changed. For the most part, the character escorts wear white polo shirts so it was not that obvious. It was only when I looked across the atrium that I realized that he was actually wearing officer's whites. So when he came past again, I asked him if the change of outfit meant that he was now the character manager, which he confirmed. I don't think I was ever quite so pleased for anybody before.

Normally it takes a day or so before the characters get the measure of me, but this time round, I had amazing character interactions right from the beginning. I could not help thinking that our new character manager may have had something to do with this. I can just imagine the kind of summary that he may have given his team:" She is as mad as a hatter, but good fun." Whatever he had told them, it worked. I had a great interaction with Mickey. I still had a bit of time until Pluto was due to be out. So I decided to go up a deck and introduce myself to the DVC staff. They checked if they had me on their list and I told them that I would die of shock if they had. They even did not have a record of us the one time when we sailed on points. Sure enough we were not on the list, but were duly added. I was told that the Member Celebration would be on the first sea day and that they were still trying to finalize the location. I was given some baseball caps and lanyards and then I headed back downstairs to see Pluto. Pluto did not have a long line either and after a nice interaction, I was on my way again.

My next stop was the shops. I had seen a photo of one of the special t-shirts for this cruise and really wanted this. On our previous Panama Canal Cruise, I had missed out, as I had not gone to the shops on the first evening. That was not going to happen this time round. When I got upstairs, the shops were still closed. In the Navigator it said that the shops would be open at 18:00 and it was nearly that by this point. I decided to stick around and wait. There were a few other people who had the same idea. 18:00 came and went and the shops were still closed. One of the merchandise staff came out and explained that due the late departure, they were not able to open the shops at this time, as we needed to be 9 miles away from the port first. She estimated that the shops would be open at 18:45. I decided that I would come back later. I decided to head up to the drink station to get myself a Coke and then I would go back to the cabin to unpack. I cut through Shutters and decided I may as well check my folder location. While doing so, I spotted another familiar face. We have known the Assistant Photography Manager Kate for a number of years. She is also from the UK. I had not expected to see her this cruise as from reports when she had been seen around, I figured that she must be on her holiday. As it was, she only had come back that day. We chatted for a bit and then I went up to deck 9 to get my Coke.

When I had my Coke, I headed back to the cabin. I unpacked and put the dresses that I wanted to put for pressing to one side. I wanted to put them in the laundry bag, but there was no laundry bag there. I put my head round the door to see if our stateroom host was about. He was just coming out of the room opposite and I asked him about this. He said that he had removed the old laundry bag that morning as it was broken and would leave a new one when he came for the turn down service. He asked me to just leave the dresses and the laundry form on the bed and he would collect them. I also asked for a corkscrew, but told him there was absolutely no rush. I finished my unpacking and got changed. I was just about to head out again when it knocked on the door and our stateroom host delivered the new laundry bag. I quickly put the dresses and the laundry form in there and left the bag on the bed and then I went to see some more characters.

Goofy was due to be out at 19:15 with Captain Mickey 30 minutes later. Goofy had virtually no line. When I had finished meeting with him, I headed up to the shop to get my t-shirt. They did not have any XXLs on display so I was going for a size bigger. I like my t-shirts baggy. Somebody else asked for the t-shirt in XXL and one of the merchandise staff said that she thought they had some in the back. There were three of us that wanted a shirt in XXL and she soon came back with them. I went and paid for my shirt and then took the shirt and the autograph book back to the cabin. Then I went to see Captain Mickey again. Once I was done with all the characters, I headed back to the cabin to retrieve Graham.

Graham had arrived back and was nearly unpacked. He got changed and we headed out. Dinner that first night was in Animator's Palate. The line was huge and we went to sit down inside Shutters until the crowds went down a bit. Once we got to the restaurant, the first person I spotted was Josip, who had been our head server on the back to back cruise last year after the first night. I was happy to see him, but he was busy with something and I figured I would get a chance later in the cruise to say "hi". We were directed to our table. Our tablemates were already there. We were seated with two brothers and their wives that lived in Southern California and Washington State. Our server and assistant server came to introduce themselves. We were given the menu and asked what we like to drink. Graham stuck with water and I had a Coke.

The menu that evening was Let The Magic Begin. Graham did his usual trick and let our server decide what he was going to have. He ended up with Fried Calamari followed by Seafood Chowder with Sourdough Croutons and Grilled Halibut with Smashed Green Peas as his main course. I am not quite so adventurous and chose my own food. I had Chicken Bastella with Almond Slaw followed by Chilled Mango and Papaya Soup and Fillet of Pork Wellington with Baby Vegetables, Potato Gratin and Cabernet Jus as my main course. During the meal, our head server came to introduce himself. It happened to be Josip. I was very happy when I realized that he would look after us again. Throughout the meal we chatted with our tablemates who seemed to be very nice. We passed on dessert. There was nothing that we really fancied on the dessert menu and by then we were really tired. We said good night to our tablemates and headed back to the cabin. Minnie was out and had hardly a line, but even that did not tempt me.

When we got back to the cabin, be took turns getting ready for bed. I had a quick look at the Navigator and took a photo of our towel animal. I also noticed that our stateroom host had left us a corkscrew. Once we were both ready we went to bed and fell asleep as soon as we were in bed.

I like the border round those last photos. Pity you weren't family of the day on the ship!

ETA: another update appeared while I was writing so the border I was talking about was the embarkation photos.

Lovely first day on board catching up with old friends! Love the magnets...too bad they wouldn't stick. I really like the door spotter....Very clever!

I'm so glad you got a taxi to the port arriving hot and sweaty would not have been fun.

Gorgeous jewelry, wow! I signed up for her monthly earring club, two so far and both are gorgeous. Her creations are amazing.

Great first day, you saw a bunch of familiar faces! :)

I'm sorry about the magnets.

Are you and Graham doing the WBTA in 2015? I am so tempted but will be doing a Mexico cruise 3 weeks later. Then I think you only love once, then think there will be another TA. :rotfl:

I like this particular border as well and on the whole, I rather like them.

I don't see much advantage in being the Family of the Day on the ship. Really the only benefit is that you are the first family to board, but now that we are Platinum Castaway Club members and therefore boarding group one, this is not much of a perk. I have also heard that they get little treats delivered to the cabin, but there is so much food that this is a curse rather than a blessing.

Really lovely necklace.

Did you see Anthony on the cruise?

I love this necklace and the other ones that I am wearing throughout the cruise. I have worked with this jewellery artist for many years, but this haul is my absolute favourite.

I did not see Anthony. I did look out for him. Maybe he was on leave.

It was a real shame that the magnets did not stick. I was a little sad every time I saw our empty door. I love the door spotter though.

I have plenty more beautiful jewellery to share. I have been plotting with Kythryne about this and she kindly uploaded some great close ups for me as I am not much good at taking photos of jewellery and the jewellery does not always show up as well in the portraits as I would like. So I am posting the close ups with her permission. I am glad that you have joined her earring club and like what you have received so far.

We had considered the WBTA in 2015 until we saw the itinerary. I think this is the worst itinerary they ever had for a WBTA. I still have my beady eyes on the EBTA, but for the time being, this is way too expensive for us. We have been on cruises before where they sold out very quickly and then people were falling like the flies come PIF day and deals were to be had. I am hoping this will happen. I have the leave confirmed for this. If we cannot do this cruise then we will combine a few days at Walt Disney World, a road trip around Southern Florida and maybe a sneaky taster cruise on the Dream. Either way, we will have a fantastic time.

Corinna

Loving all of the character photos, so cute! :thumbsup2

Your jewelry is very pretty, fun and festive!

Corinna, I absolutely adore your pink dress, it is gorgeous.

You have no idea how unbelievably excited I am to be taking this cruise next year but, until then, I will be living vicariously through your trip report. It sounds as though the Port of Miami is a little disorganised and I am sure it probably doesn't make for the magical start to a cruise vacation that Port Canaveral does, however I still got excited when I read about you boarding and could picture you in all the places you were describing.

I know you mentioned that you board on Deck 4 - does that mean they don't announce you onto the ship? I must be the only person who actually doesn't like that bit, as I hate the thought of people looking at me as we're walking on and always think I will trip over or something.

I can't wait for your next update.

Enjoying your report. Did you make the door spotter yourself? We won't be doing the FE on the EBTA next year (to save more space for clothes) but I don't want my hook to be bare - something like that would be perfect.

I mistakenly thought you'd booked the EBTA - hopefully you'll be able to pick up a deal nearer the time :)
