I love Main Street, but ...

I too miss the Main Street of yesteryear. I loved the smell of the tobacco shop. I like the fact there were individual stores, not just one huge store on the emporium side. As a kid, I used to beg my parents to let me go in the arcade and the magic shop. I remember buying a magic set there and "entertaining" my family with the tricks.

Now, regarding Starbucks, I don't want to drag that up again, but I had a revelation the other day that changed the way I feel. I remember reading that when Disneyland opened, there were real shops from outside the park along Main Street. Walt wanted it that way. There was a lingerie shop! Can you imagine that--buying a bra in Disneyland. There was also a piano store. So, in a way, it's a step closer to Walt's original idea.

Twenty, thirty years ago, with the magic store, cinema, penny arcade, etc. it was my favourite land bar none. Even when I was very young. It transported you.

Today, with the crowds and the endless stores, I can't stand to be there at all. And in comparison to that, the idea that the word 'Starbucks' is hidden somewhere doesn't matter a whit.
