I love credit cards so much!

The more I read about it, the more it sounds like a Gold card-specific issue. Either way, I'm going to play it safe on Amex for a while or just go for BBP if I get some downtime. I got DH's Citi AA biz last night, I plan to get him a CIU in March, and then I need to build up more SPG and Hilton points for Tokyo. I highly doubt he'll have an issue with Amex considering he's a cardholder since 2012 and we've upped his spend on that card recently. I'd like to get him whatever the high end Hilton card is (Aspire?) around August so we'll have the status from that during our trip to Tokyo. Fortunately, I don't need MRs or SPG points immediately for flights since I plan to use AA through JAL, and I already have enough AA miles for my flight and will have enough for DH once this new bonus posts.

Feeling compelled to jump in on the Japan chatter. I went to Tokyo Disney a few years ago and would love to get back but will need to time it with cherry blossom season as that's also on my bucket list.

Just a few thoughts. Tokyo Disney is a good 45 minutes outside of the city, so we did a split stay with two nights at the Disney property that is right outside the park and then two nights in the city. Also, you might want time the Aspire closer to the end of the year for the possibility of a double-dip on the travel credit.

Ooh, they will do that??? I'm a Hilton noob.

I don't know if they will for you, but I had a situation where some points were gone and I called not even knowing my account number and some other nonsense and the CSR bent over backwards to help me. I just found them extremely accommodating.

I guess I should add that I'm pretty good on the phone. I'm patient and I listen and I try to speak where the person feels as if they are on a level field with me. It goes a long way with people who have to listen to customers gripe all day.

Definitely try your CU first! My small local (or used to be, before moving) CU counts as a DD for Chase. The nice thing about Chase is they post fast - you can expect to see the bonus by the second Tuesday after your push. So you will know within 2 weeks if it worked or not.
I am hoping that works and then I'll just push the money from there for the next 6 months to keep it fee free.

so tell me once again.... this is for P2 who's 4/24...... the CIP app...... how tough is this? I'm really leery about going for it,and him having to call and talk to people...... should we go for a lower offer like CIC or something instead if they approve those more easily? How hard is it to get instant biz approval?(other than the swa biz, that was instant for him) it's a 'biz' since all his side work is not official at all,but he does plenty of it.

My DH (P2) applied through my referral on Friday night (he was 0/24), and was instantly approved (used SSN, sole proprietor). I hope that helps!

Thanks for the tip on Aspire! I haven't looked at it closely enough yet to know all the benefits, so I'll definitely examine that further. I just knew that that was a card I would likely want to have in my pocket when we went there.

Yeah, we will definitely be booking the majority of our stay in the city, and then doing probably two nights at Disney, and then hopefully going to either Osaka or Kyoto for a few days before returning home.

A moment of off topic complaining... we earn quarterly bonuses based on plant performance, but we have to jump through some hoops to get them - one is we have to turn in one safety card a month, basically detailing an unsafe condition we encountered with a coworker and how we fixed it. They are due by 8am on the first business day of the following month. I've never missed a month, even back when we had to due multiple per month... until December. I filled mine out and forgot to drop it in the box. I thought that's okay, 1/2 is the first business day and I'll do it when I get in. Except we got rear-ended. So it was really that last thing on my mind that morning. So they wouldn't take it the next day, and now I don't get $600. My fault, but...

tagging everyone I remember discussing the Marriott Platinum benefit with me, but I'm sure I'm forgetting someone, sorry! - @Alexle2007 @WVMomof3 @jhoannam

a user on r/churning called and reported back that it's a website glitch and we have until Jan 14 to select an option. Like everything take it with a grain of salt since it's a Marriott call center rep, but I think I will give it a couple days to straighten out before calling in. They also confirmed that the 5 elite night credits would retroactively go to 2018 :( There goes that plan. That's only useful if you needed it to hit 75 nights or another status level because they don't count toward Lifetime nights either.

Here's the comment: https://www.reddit.com/r/churning/comments/absgal/daily_discussion_thread_january_02_2019/ed3889f/

Just wondering if you have seen anything new on this? Website still won't let me pick an option.

I didn't see a response to this so I wanted to let you know I just completed this bank bonus. They 100% made me get an EIN. That being said, it was SUPER easy (we do rental properties and have since 2012, pay taxes, but have never had an EIN. They didn't care!) I got a free EIN and was sent an email in about 5 min. Printed that out and took it into my local Huntington Branch. Made my deposit. Card took awhile to come. Made my minimum purchases mostly at McDonalds getting $1 bags of ice (kitchen remodel). Opened card 9/30 and $750 bonus hit 12/6.

I guess I'll try and see if I can get by without the EIN. I from reading some did w/ a DBA. But my DBA might be expired too. DOH!

Do you still have the Optima? I used mine to refer myself to the Rose Gold card. My two old cards were Optima and SPG personal, and then 3 cards in a short time in 2018. I think you will be successful. I will probably never get rid of the Optima - no annual fee and long credit history plus is an MR card.

It self closed at some point from never using it anymore. But Amex still lets me claim I've been a member since 95, LOL.

I always try to be nice too, because sometimes people just suck when it's not even your fault in service type positions.

Maybe I'll have DH try tonight, since it's in his name. On one hand I'm like, eh, it's 6k points total (only a 3k drop, not 5k) and I had zero plans for these anyways. on the other hand, I'm like... 6k more points... puts me closer to being able to keep a DS Hilton in my back pocket for a weekend trip

I tried yesterday and it wouldn't even give options, had a down for maintenance error message when I tried to sign in. I see someone on Reddit tried to call yesterday but they couldn't do it either, probably cuz of the error message - https://www.reddit.com/r/churning/comments/adgors/discussion_thread_january_07_2019/edi23gc

If it's back up maybe calling in might work now?

My pink gold has become quite popular in my pocket. I have 3 go to cards right now: Amtrak Boa - I want to load up on those points and I see value in them considering my location in Maryland for NYC trips and Auto train.

Citi Costco - I earn 4% on gas everywhere and since I have the exec membership, even more pennies. Before Amex gold it was also my restaurant card. Between the Costco membership, both checks from Citi and Costco exec will have brought in over $600 in cash this year past.

Just checked and nothing for me. But my 30% Staples credited over night which is good as now I'll pay those charges. I hate charges hanging around on the cards but if I pay before the credit than I have a credit on the card and it seems like forever before I need the credit again.

Thought I had quoted @Haley R also. Waiting to see what you get on this one!

Me also if I needed to use cash anyway! I have price lined my way around a lot of places in the past but in Lake Buena Vista I usually got the Hilton near Disney for $65 - $70 or Gaylord Palms for $80-$85. (Its been a while.)
Well we might not even do Priceline now. I just got quoted $1800 to stay all 6 nights at WL with a magical rate.

Wow! Prior to having DVC and also hotel points in my life, I thought nothing much about dropping $2500 to $4500 just on rooms at Disney! Now, it gives me the shudders, lol!

If I were to win a successful 3 night at $142, I would immediately submit another 3 night and hope for the same result, bringing it to 6 times $142, but, really, since I have points, I'm probably not going to spend much over $200 on any hotel stay in the future unless I have to go and have no point options......
The $142/night is only an option for the first 3 nights. The last three nights are slim pickings because it’s over the weekend and I found out there is a dance competition.

The Sheraton Grande Tokyo Bay? It’s right next to the Hilton on the monorail line. It’s a Cat 6 50k Marriott points/night hotel (5th night free, so 200k/standard room for 5 nights), but since you’d be booking for 6 you’d either need two standard rooms or a suite (which, as @Albort pointed out, you can’t book with Marriott points but you can book with points at a Hilton).

UR might be another option to pay the cash rate for some nights, redeem Marriott points for other nights, and ask the hotel to link the reservations. As @wanderlust7 mentioned, the rooms at the Sheraton don’t look too expensive and, with a 1.5x multiplier on the CSR, booking with URs might be a good value. (But then, compare the cash rates between the Hilton vs. Sheraton, and room vs. suite.)

If you’re going to try to top off your Marriott points, I don’t know if the SPG Lux is a good idea in your case. The current bonus is only 75k/$3k MSR, but it’s been offered at 100k and 125k for $5k MSR and probably will again. It’s got a $450 AF not waived, but a $300 Marriott credit per cardmember year that you can probably call in to apply as a payment towards your reservation (or use elsewhere) if your stay won’t be until after your first cardmember year and the credit resets (unsure if there’s anything to apply the credit towards on an all points reservation, so maybe book an extra night or elsewhere at the cash rate — because how often are you going to visit Japan?). It comes with a 50k FN cert, but you won’t get it until 6-8 weeks after your second year AF posts, meaning you’d have to pay $900 in AF for 75k-100k points, $600 in Marriott credits, and a 50k FN cert that you won’t get until at least a year from when you apply. I know you’re trying to trim your AFs. If you bring in DH (I forgot what he has as far as Starriott), whether it’s getting Amex’s SPG cards or Chase’s Marriott cards, keep in mind Marriott limits points transfers to 100k per year. Marriott does offer points advance, so you can book now even if you won’t have the points until like 14 days before the check in date.

ETA: Eek! Just checked a suite at the Hilton Tokyo Bay for 5 nights in October and it’s showing me a cost of 860k Hilton points.

THANK YOU!! I appreciate the info! So, no way is a suite happening :thud: Usually two rooms are cheaper than a suite, ime, so that is okay. Our norm is just two standard rooms.

I'm not sure dh or I either one are eligible for the SPG lux...He has both SPG pers (1/18) & biz (3/18). I have the SPG pers (4/18), Marriott biz (8/18), & SPG biz (8/18). Maybe the Marriott pers for each of us? We currently have just over 300k Marriott (not pooled, atm).

I'm not opposed to opening Hilton if that makes more sense. I currently have no hilton cards and never have had any (nor dh).
