I love credit cards so much!

I've been keeping up with the Chase shutdown thread on reddit and it definitely seems like the people getting shutdown for good are the ones who are LOL/24 and continue to apply for other cards. I've seen some reports of people in the 10/24 range getting temporarily shutdown, but they get their accounts reopened pretty easily after a call.

The mpx one right? What do you use your mr for? That’s my biggest hang up on this. I currently have an 8 month old as well as a 5 year old, so I’m in kind of an exotic travel lull. I’ve been using my ur through the portal for hotels for short weekend type trips. But I’m not really sure what is use the mr for

You and me both, friend. I have a 4 year old, so we've put off exotic travel for the foreseeable future. It's a shame because I've found MR points best used to transfer to airline partners for international flights. Pre-parenthood, my wife and I flew to Japan entirely on MR points transferred to ANA. I've been teasing a wanderlist out of my wife, and they're all international destinations so I'm stockpiling points as much as I can. Our last use of MR was to transfer points to Hawaiian Airlines during a 25% transfer bonus. You can find award availability most times for 35-40k miles roundtrip to/from Hawaii, although availability seems near impossible over Christmas and New Year. Check out awardhacker to see what airlines will get you to where you might want to go, how many miles you'll need, what programs transfer to those airlines, and keep a lookout for transfer bonuses to your airline of choice.

ETA: If travel isn’t in your plans, you could always go the Schwab route where 1 MR = $0.0125. Check out @SouthFayetteFan ’s reddit post about that.

Just an update on my SPG Biz spend, that took me a whole 3 weeks to finish LOL. Over $3700 of the $5k was Plastiq for rent and tuition and Indiegogo for my dd's senior film project. The rest was bills, dining, Amazon etc. I was worried about so much to Plastiiq and $500 to Indiegogo, but I got my 25000 points credited the day after I hit the $5000 :-). Now my statement closes today, so I can the points for the actual spending :-)
Now to finish dh's spend requirement...

Soooo, for those who have been following the Chase shutdown phenomenon closely, any recommendations on do’s and dont’s for meeting the minimum spend on my Marriott biz that I am waiting to arrive? I’m at 7/24, and will have 6 Chase cards once this one makes its way into my wallet. Are there particular charges I should avoid putting on this card?

I was planning to go for the Marriott biz next but rethinking that now...that shutdown post from @SouthFayetteFan really has me freaked out! It seems like people are being shutdown more from the co-branded card apps. Is that accurate? Which is just what I'm after now.

I'm at 6/24 but will drop to 5/24 in April. I try not to push it too far since there are several more Chase cards I'd like. I don't MS at all and it's rare I put more than $1500-2000 on a card in a month. So, it doesn't seem like I'm high on the shutdown risk but I am wanting the marriott (biz and personal), Hyatt and Ihg...and it seems to be more of the co- branded cards triggering these shutdowns.

I was planning on the Marriott Biz too, I’m 4/24 but all those in the last 13 months. And I really want to get the CIP (in March) and double dip the CSP/ CSR (July), so maybe I should hold off on the Marriott Biz. I’m wondering if I should go for the Amex Hilton Biz instead.

Sorry if I freaked anybody out. I wanted to put the information out there just so that people can stay up on the current trends/reports.

1) For people newer to the game (i.e. less than 5/24) I would pay attention to the shutdowns where a person got 4 Chase cards in 5 months and the person who attempted a 6th Chase application in 11 months. This basically backs up the advice that's been given recently of keeping things slow with Chase. Nobody quite knows how fast is too fast...but obviously these examples were. We all know that you can potentially get 8 or 9 cards within your 5/24 limit (2-3 Biz + a double dip at 4/24) but if that's your strategy you probably need to try to execute it over an 18+ month time frame.

2) For the veterans (i.e. 10/24 or more) it seems that once you leave Chase...you may not want to come back unless you quiet things down for a good long time prior. You also need to weigh how bad a shutdown would be...if you are in 2 player mode and have duplicates of many cards maybe shutdown isn't terrible. If you're generating decent referral points shutdown would cause you to lose those point earning opportunities. Obviously everybody's situation is different.

3) For those in the middle (i.e. 6/24 - 9/24) You probably need to decide which camp you're in - are you going to forget Chase and move on (now you're a #2)...or are you trying to get back in Chase's good graces (now you're a #1).

Of course the primary strategy for everybody here to "slow their roll" so to speak is to intersperse some Business cards that DO NOT report to your personal credit report. Additionally - for those in 2 player, alternating applications can make both players look better!

@wendow - to answer your question on the co-brands...the reason most of those cards cause the shutdowns is because they are the only cards you can get beyond 5/24. I'm sure if somebody managed to get a CSR at 19/12 or 42/24 they would be a prime shutdown candidate too. The problem is, nobody who is 42/24 is getting a CSR these days, haha.

@jhoannam - You're in an interesting situation. I'd love to say you'd be fine to get that Marriott Biz...but based on your strategy (and the fact that CIP, CSP/CSR will be much more lucrative than Marriott Biz) it might be for the best to forego the Marriott to keep safe.

@Calfan - At this time the "type" of spend has no bearing on this so I wouldn't worry. These shutdown reports all relate to applying for too many cards too fast.

On the shutdown information, I'm sure this is a dumb question, I get the xx/24 numbers, but what are the xx/12 figures referring to?

I noticed a couple that hit Chase really fast, one/two a month that were shutdown.

@SouthFayetteFan thanks for the information! Very helpful for me as I'm just getting started here.

I recently got the CSR and JB Plus cards within the last month. My plan was to wait a month or so and then go for two SW Chase cards for the CP. Opinions on if I should change my plan, or if this might still be safe?

I'm always hesitant to give absolute answers on this stuff, because I would hate to be wrong and mislead you. My gut says you're fine - You would have 2 cards in 1/2018...then 2 cards in 3/2018...3 of those cards being Chase. I would think you're ok BUT you definitely would want to wait awhile before your next card then...probably a minimum of 3 months maybe even 4 or 5...You could throw an AMEX biz card in after the SW cards to space things out a bit and preserve your sub 5/24 status.

Just got an email saying "Welcome to Your New Card" for the Marriott Biz and it says it's on the way. Really hope that doesn't mean they just mailed it considering I was approved 9 days ago...

Totally understand about being hesitant to give answers, but really appreciate it!

DO IT! I get tremendous value out of my Amex personal Platinum. See my post in /r/DISchurners.

Wait now I have a question: I have the 100k offer sitting in my offers window, too. But I was going to pass on it in favor of DH getting the CSR (I'm over 5/24 until later this year). If we currently don't have either card, is CSR the way to go? I figured yes because the travel credit is more flexible (we also don't uber much). No way DH goes for that high of an AF on two cards, so I've got to decide.

Same! Only use it for park perks and the occasional visit to the Disney store.

Same. Only reason I keep it around. (Plus the 0% APR on trips for 6 mos.)

Quick question: How do park tickets purchased through Undercover Tourist code with AmEx? Travel, I'm hoping?

Has anyone been to Best Buy this week to buy gift cards with a Best Buy gift card? I bought some gift cards online that came with a $10 BB card. I tried to use my rewards online and it was a no go...."cannot be used on gift cards'. I'm going to try to redeem in store sometime over the next week. I'll report back once I've tried.

what is your 5/24 status and */12 status? I agree with @SouthFayetteFan you should be fine...

I wonder if I still can since I already got that email. I have no immediate need for it but I just can't believe they've waited that long to mail it!

Do we think both will be able to be used? Like I could give DH one? I didn't add him as an employee...

Do I just call the regular customer service number?

Sorry, a million questions!! Appreciate you guys so much :)

ETA: DISREGARD. I figured it out :)

You can use the Uber website to estimate the cost for Ubers in LV. As for the rental car, the status with CSR and National is nice but we got significantly cheaper rates on the specific car we wanted (Chevy Tahoe type) going through UR. People also report getting great rates through Costco if you're a Costco member.

We rented a car in Anaheim last year (picked up at Downtown Disney). Best price was Costco. Beat any 'status' rates with CSR. This year I'm researching for Flagstaff AZ and have a few Citi TY points. Using those points brought up a deal for an SUV for the same price everyone else has an economy. Now DH can't decide if he wants to drive an SUV :sad2: FWIW our everyday cars are a Jeep and a Subaru Forester.

If you are leaving Friday then doesn’t matter; usual advice is to check early and often. With 6 people regular mini van would work. Costco by far the best if it is an option. It is nice too because additional driver no cost. I like Alamo. My personal experience is they seem less anal about the whole thing.

Main advantage of CSR is that you don’t need any type of additional insurance. That is covered by the card. Just waive all of those charges and say not needed.

I always go through USAA and hertz for the best discount.

Not sure why I didn't think to check the Uber site for the fare estimator. Thanks! Just checked for an UberXL and the estimate is around $25, which is pretty good in my opinion. I figured we can check the actual rate once we are at the airport and decide for sure. I'm not familiar with the shuttles and whether or not they would make multiple stops. Since we are arriving around 10 pm I'd really like to get to our hotel as quickly as possible.

As far as the rental car, I think I'm getting anxiety about all of this....LOL. I'm a habitual planner and it's already kind of killing me that we're basically flying by the seat of our pants on this trip. I'm trying to go with the flow and I figured we're only there for 3 full days anyway, so we should be fine. However, the rental car is something I feel we should reserve in advance. My cousin said no one has decided which day we are going to the Hoover Dam, so they are just wanting to walk over to the rental place the day of and rent a car. I'm a bit concerned about whether or not we'll be able to just walk up without a reservation and easily get a vehicle to fit our group of 6.

My cousin texted me last night saying her husband found a Tahoe at a Hertz near our hotel for only $53 for the day. That definitely didn't sound right to me, so I checked online. I can't find anything at all comparable to a Tahoe for that price. I'm going to call her today to discuss everything and ask where they saw this rate because I've had no luck finding that and everything of a comparable size is much higher than that.
