I love credit cards so much!

How are we feeling on amex self-referrals right now? Seems like there's been some chatter about it potentially causing Amex to lay eyes on you. I'm in the very baby stages of Amex, so I don't want to burn them any time soon.

I self referred from the Ascend to the Aspire. I have 4 amex and have had the SPG Biz for 12 years now. So I think they like me. I got the referral points right away

Do you each have AMEX cards and are you able to cross-refer instead of self-refer? That would be a strategy to play it safer.

Yes, I do... didn't think about that! However, I just checked going off of DH's Delta card (the only Amex he has) and it only gives me the option to refer to other Delta cards. Is it specific to brands? I didn't realize that.

I'll try asking again....if you book an award night with Hilton but cancel, can you get it back? I'm thinking of taking my 13yo to chicago and possibly use my hilton free nights (thanks to the Aspire and Ascend) on the Waldorf. But there's a chance the BF and I might go somewhere in Feb and I'd rather we use them, LOL. So can you cancel and get them back?

We opened several AMEX Biz cards last year, the first one will have it's AF hitting soon. I really don't want to pay any annual fees, especially right now. If I close the cards as the first year ends, is AMEX going to blackball me, or claw anything back? If I can close them, when is the optimal time to do so?

Thanks!
I'm in the same boat. First AF will post this month, and no way am I keeping that card, or many of the other Amex I opened. I'm not sure how will Amex will view me after this year. We may be on the blackball list together ;)

I'm debating about this for our cruise, because DH has 3 elderly grandparents who aren't in the best of health.

In your situation I would get it...we usually don’t buy trip insurance but did 10 years ago when we were doing a big family cruise for my in laws 50th anniversary...and everything was being booked a year in advance.
Unfortunately my father-in-law was diagnosed with lung cancer and passed away before the cruise...and everything was fully reimbursed

So to self-refer to ANY card you have to have one of the AMEX non co-brand cards. The brands can only self refer within those brands (i.e. Hilton for all Hilton cards...Delta for all Delta cards). Basically once each person has a regular AMEX card like the BBP or Plat, etc. then they can refer the other player to ANY card :)

Personally I think it's worth it. Compared to the cost of the cruise, the insurance is very little money. One of the people I was worried about health-wise was my BIL and he passed away 6 weeks after we returned from our cruise. If that had happened right before the cruise and we didn't have insurance, we would have been out a lot of money.
But in that case you would need insurance that covered a pre-existing condition. Which usually means you have to buy it almost immediately upon booking the cruise. Just something else to be aware of.

Thanks! Ok, guess it works out that I will be using a referral link regardless then since all we currently have are co-branded cards.

In the vein of not angering Amex but also canceling cards, I didn't realize the Hilton $15,000 spend for a free weekend night was once per CALENDAR year. I thought it was card year. I wasn't exactly chasing that amount anyways, but that card will definitely not be a keeper for me now that I see it's reset to $0.

Are the free night cert's for the SPG biz and Marriott biz both for a room up to 35k points per night? And the Chase Marriott night posts right away after your anniversary, but the Amex takes 6-8 weeks, is that correct? My SPG renews mid-Feb, so I would receive the cert by mid-Apr? My Marriott I opened June 25th, so I should get that by end of July? Trying to see if I'd be able to use one or both for the end of July in San Diego. Thanks!

I would PC, but I don't know that most of the Biz cards have 0 fee options do they?

Went to a physical PNC branch today to open a checking for bonus, and was still denied for EWS. Dang. I always thought in-branch rarely checked that stuff. I guess I should order my report to find out if something is actually wrong.

I have used so many self-referrals from Amex and haven't had any problems. I don't think it makes any difference. Amex surely knows about this loophole and could have closed it by now...

OMG I JUST GOT THE AMEX POP UP

:badpc::badpc::badpc::badpc::badpc:

2 business cards in the last 8 months, how is this happening to me?!?!

Oh... well, this is awkward.

That's a bummer. Amex is so strange and awful.

how much have u spent on amex?

same, my gold card i applied for yesterday is also on a self referral. my BBP was too. both were instant approval.
i do put around 10k a month on my BBP.

For the Chase banking bonus, once my Savings bonus posts + the extra $, am I safe to move those funds out? I could be earning a much better interest rate on that $10k else, 90 days is bad enough. And I believe I need to keep the checking open for 6 months?

some reason my quote shows this one...
u just need to spend more on amex.

Oh sorry about that. I feel like I've spent a ton with them, $5000 in 4 months is a lot of spend for us. I just ordered $200 worth of Disney GCs from Staples on my SPG Biz with the 10% offer. I guess I'll go ahead and apply for a Citi AA Biz for DH so I have an MSR to work on somewhere...
