I love credit cards so much!

Really :offtopic::offtopic: but looking for recommendations for a book series for DS11, 7th grade to read. He just finished the Horizon series and Harry Potter. He told me to pick something since so far I've had good picks. (He really picked out the Horizon series himself when I made him get a book at the school book sale and not just crap :)). We have the upcoming Fantastic Beasts on pre-order so he needs something to hold him over for the next month.
Any love for the Enders Series? Enders Game and Ender's Shadow. really great books. I never got a change to read pass those though.

What is the PP charge again? I'm trying to figure out things for next summer, when we'll have 4 people at one of the restaurants.
It was $27 this past summer, but it just went up to $32.

i think restaurants just give u 2x$28(or whatever noted in the description) and u pay for the rest(whatever over $56). @disneybirds posted charges are for lounge access...

I got 0 points for Marriott today, just a Thank you for playing - you have entered for a chance to win. On the plus side, my account finally didn't' get an error but my account is still at 0 points for the whole dumb game.

This isn't going to make you feel any better, but last time I played I got zero points, saw your post (yes, I'm behind on the board) and remembered to play this AM and got 1000 points - so thank you for the reminder :lovestruc

Ender's game is soooooooo good. Not a huge fan of the other books in the series (Orson Scott Card is pretty tough on his characters) but Enders Game is great for a middle schooler (or anyone!)

Really? I got 0 points again today for DH just figured it reverted back to entry instead of points for everyone. I am also back to Error on my account. Marriott really does hate me.

PP tracks by restaurant/lounge visit, not airport so you could visit all the places in an airport if you so chose.

Even though you have 2 PPs in your name you can’t use 2 PPs in one place. Person on the PP must be using it. Could you use 4 visits on the Hilton PP? Something to look into.
Do you mean at a restaurant? I thought if I had a PP (csr) we could use 3 entitlements (1+2 extras) at $28 each? This is incorrect, I can only use my one entitilement(my csr) at a restaurant? I have 10 Hilton pp passes so I can use those up no problem...

During the summer, we were in PDX and went to a restaurant there with 4 of us. Only 3 of us ordered, but she charged us for 4 people. I called Amex and argued my case and they refunded the extra charge after I sent them a copy of the receipt. If you can't use the extra Hilton PP, I wonder if you can have one person at your table ask for a separate check and only order a coke? Of course, this would only work for a restaurant not a lounge. Looking forward to hearing other responses!
so you used 3 passes at that meal? did you just order off the regular menu,or say something ahead of time to use the option?

Thanks. I ended up ordering The False Prince and Mark of the Thief both by Jennifer Nielsen since she wrote one of the Horizon books that he liked very much. I started to get The Hunger Games but I wasn't sure if his teacher would be ok with that series.

While I loved The Hunger Games series (except the ending), if your kid is not yet into dystopic fiction then I would hold off until he expresses an interest. Around where I live, most kids have read that series by 7th grade. That's great that you have the Percy Jackson series for him, those are terrific and funny, and I feel they keep a lighthearted tone. That author has numerous spin-offs (going into Roman, Egyptian, Nordic mythologies) too.

Some suggestions:

Artemis Fowl series - elite leprechaun forces

The Inheritance series (Eragon, etc.) - a less sophisticated version of Lord of the Rings, with the first book written by the author when he was 15.

The Alex Rider series - a British orphan teenager becomes a James Bond type character taking on missions to save the world

The Summoner Trilogy - another fantasy series involving an orphan wizard, elves, dwarves, and orcs.

The Giver series - about a society where everything is heavily controlled, a gentle intro to dystopic fiction (compared to Hunger Games)

Enders Game series - extraplanetary dystopic fiction

Animal Farm - classic Orwell disguised as a children's book

@Artygal90, honestly, neither #1 nor #2.

If you're looking for a first-ever Amex card -- and a business card that won't add to your */24 and throw off your plans with Chase -- I think you should seriously consider the Blue Business Plus ("BBP"):
  • $0 AF, which is great for holding MR points if you decide to cancel other (future) MR-earning cards with big AFs and find yourself needing a no cost option to keep your points alive.
  • 2x MR on every purchase up to $50k/yr., which you could eventually pair with the Amex Gold's 4x MR on dining and groceries, the Amex Platinum's 5x MR on airfare, if you want to build out a MR-earning wallet.
  • 20k MR after $5k/3 months MSR targeted offer, or
  • 10k MR after $3k/3 months MSR through support link offer.
  • Amex biz credit card so it won’t count against Chase 5/24, but will take up one of Amex’s 5 credit card limit.
  • Ability to generate 15k MR referral bonuses up to 55k MR/yr., which you can use to self-refer yourself to other Amex cards' public and occasionally elevated offers in incognito mode when you aren't targeted for the higher offers.
You're considering the BGR with a $5k MSR anyway, but you're aware that taking the 50k MR public offer means precluding yourself from the higher 75k MR targeted offer for that card product in the future.

If you get the Biz Green, that's a 5k MR bonus for a single purchase (e.g., a banana or a pack of gum). Easy peasy, lemon squeezy. However, you should think longer term about the utility of this card and what it might mean for your relationship with Amex.

First, the Biz Green earns only earns 5k MR per referral. You can generate a self-referral link and use it to apply for almost any of Amex's other cards, but that only pads the other cards' welcome offers by another 5k MR (compared with 10k MR/referral from the BGR or 15k MR/referral from the BBP).

Second, the Biz Green earns only 2x MR for travel booked through Amex Travel and 1x MR for everything else -- it's not a good daily earner and you have no compelling reason to put any additional spend on this card after your first and only purchase for the 5k MR. The Biz Green has a $0 first year introductory AF, but $95 afterwards. I'm guessing you plan to cancel the Biz Green after the first year, which is understandable. But, with Amex scrutinizing your "history" with welcome offers and cards you have opened and closed whenever you apply for a new card, signing up for a card, putting only the minimum amount of spend on it to get the bonus, and sockdrawering the card until it's time to cancel is no longer acceptable, and you'll get this dreaded pop up:

Based on your history with American Express welcome offers, introductory APR offers, or the number of cards you have opened and closed, you are not eligible to receive this welcome offer.

We have not yet performed a credit check. Would you still like to proceed?

This pop up warning basically means if you proceed and get approved for a new card, you won't get the welcome bonus. If this sounds like your plan for the Biz Green, don't go for it; you'll end up on Amex's naughty list. The Biz Green would not be a good first card for you to get started with Amex, and you should probably save it for when you have other Amex cards on which you're already spending lots of money on an ongoing basis to offset the weak link Biz Green.

Going back to the BBP, it earns 15k MR per referral, and you can use a referral link generated from the BBP for yourself to apply for pretty much any of Amex's other cards, including the BGR. Say you never get targeted for the BGR's 75k MR offer. You could self-refer yourself to the BGR from the BBP for the 50k MR, $5k MSR/3 months public offer and pocket a 15k MR referral bonus, netting you 65k combined MR points, which isn't a bad deal considering the lower $5k MSR (because the 75k MR BGR sometimes comes with a higher $10k MSR). And because the BBP is such a strong everyday card with 2x MR earned on every purchase, you can use it as a daily driver and keep Amex happy to approve you for future cards.

Lain, is this what you would recommend for anyone who has no MR's card but would like to begin collecting them (with hopes to use for int'l travel to Japan, maybe Europe)? Or is trying to pull the 100k plat offers better?

Thanks for posting that, I could use some pork roll (a Jersey thing) and BJs has my favorite brand.

Thought process:
“Some WHAT?! Oh. Dear. Lord.”
*this Californian hits up Google*
“Huh, made in 1856. So basically more legit than SPAM. Learn something new everyday!”
H/t @andy117 When I get the chance to try pork roll I certainly shall!

I had to google as well. I should check to see if they have pork spread, or cretons. Very tasty when you spread on bread...add a little mayo or spicy mustard.

Anyone else using Discover for Amazon this quarter? How do I know if my purchases are tracking 5x? I reloaded my gc acct to try it out but can't see how to figure this out- I want to buy a bunch of reloads or gc to fill my acct...thanks! (so far I've only used my Disc at warehouses and Amazon, but HOW am I supposed to track anything here,or know if the 5x is counting?)
Use the cash back calendar..if you know what you spent at the warehouse stores, you should easily be able to track Amazon by figuring the difference.

if u can pull the 100k MR Amex Plat, thats the way to go. Apply for the BBP later or closer down the road. I think Amex tends to target u more if you dont have an Amex card.
I could be wrong though. i pulled the trigger on the Amex Plat Biz first, 2 months later, BBP.

I'm at 0 points, 2 days in a row.

Yes, PayPal payments to merchants are fine and count towards Amex MSR.

PayPal P2P payments to friends & family are fine too and typically don’t pose a problem with counting towards Amex MSR. I’ve made donations to my daughter’s school/pto with my Amex while trying to meet MSR using the friends & family option (to avoid the recipient incurring the fees), and the payments counted towards MSR, with no problem from the RATs.

The only instance I’ve seen Amex RATs have a problem with PayPal P2P payments is when you use PayPal to pay someone who shares the same address as you.
Thank you :goodvibes

My wife has been getting the 100k Plat offers almost every other week for the last 2 months. Of course...she won't bite. 0/24 and attached to her Disney card.

Planning a little escape with my sweet husband around my birthday (not on my birthday - kids would not be happy if I wasn't home- but near my birthday). We were planning to do one night in Boston, and I found a room so cheap it would be silly to use points. Then we decided to add a night (yay for 2 nights & 1 full day to play in Boston!). Well, a Friday night at a Westin was super cheap, but a Thursday night in Boston is WAY more expensive. I'm hoarding points of all kinds at the moment towards our future Europe trip, so I still didn't want to burn points, and all the Starriotts (status!) were silly expensive for a cash booking.

The Charles Hotel in Cambridge (Harvard Square) is part of the Fine Hotels group that offers a deal for Amex Plat holders - breakfast, upgrade (if available) late checkout and a $100 F&B credit with your stay (the credit varies by property - this place gives you $100). So, although the room rate isn't what I'd call cheap, it is less than a nice hotel downtown or in the Seaport District for that night, and we will get breakfast and dinner out of the deal!

We'll be arriving late, and there is a bar with upscale bar snacks and good drinks at the hotel where our $100 credit will get us a light dinner and a couple of drinks, which is all we will want that night. There is a restaurant om the hotel that does an amazing breakfast (or at least, it was amazing last time we stayed there, 10+ years ago), so it seems like a pretty good deal for the price!

Just another endorsement of Percy Jackson...love that series (and the spin offs).

Seven friends and I are going to the Hershey Spa!

I was just thinking about that last night! I really want to do that for my bday some year.

Yup. 8 nights and running the half.

Good luck with the half! I ran it a couple of times before my injury and it's a fun race. Of course it was back when it was at night and soooo hot with not always great visibility so that made it even more challenging (for me anyway). Hopefully you'll have good weather :shamrock:
