I love credit cards so much!

Funny, that was actually the series he just tried to start reading but found it not to his liking. (Although I don’t think he read very much of it before he put it down.)

Another series my kids liked that I don't think has been mentioned yet is the Golden Compass series by Phillip Pullman.

Regarding the Narnia series, IIRC there is some dispute about which book is first in the series -- the publisher has designated The Magician's Nephew as book 1 but I think Lewis wrote The Lion Witch and Wardrobe first, and I'm pretty sure that's the book my kids started with. I think Lion is more kid-oriented, but it's been a while since I've thought about these books.

I loved this series. I still have my copies.

YES. I love the Golden Compass series!! I thought about recommending it, but I hesitated because I know there have been some objections around the books' strong religious/atheistic overtones. I figured I wouldn't try to convert anyone's kids one way or the other on here :rotfl2:

And I read The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe as a kid, and then read the whole series for the first time last year. I read it in chronological order starting with The Magician's Nephew. Honestly, that's probably my favorite book of the whole series.

I know I've asked this on here before, but are either of you (or anyone else) on Goodreads? I've connected with a couple people on this board on Goodreads, but just thought I'd ask since I love getting more friends on there!

Ha, then that series is perfect for us. We have seen the movie. I’ll add to it to the list.

Tagging @Artygal90 too.

I agree that the 100k MR Platinum is still the unicorn, and if you can catch it you’re golden.

Alternatively, you can do as @Albort suggested and try to call in for the 100k MR Biz Platinum, but that carries a higher $10k MSR/3 months even if the offer is available (vs. the personal Platinum’s lower $5k MSR/3 months).

(Not to mention you’d have to decide whether the $450 Biz Plat AF or $550 personal Plat AF is worth it.)

The Biz Plat and vanilla/plain Plat also earn 15k MR/referral (the co-branded Platinums can’t refer and can’t be referred to) up to 55k MR/year, so those cards are what you’ll want to use
for their valuable 15k MR bonus to generate a self-referal link to almost all of Amex’s other cards.

However, if you’re not having any luck getting targeted for, calling in for, or pulling a 100k MR Platinum, and you want to start earning MRs ASAP, the BBP is not a bad place to start.

The BBP is already a solid card with 2x MR everywhere and no AF. But the fact that it earns 15k MR/referral (the same as the Plats) makes it a valuable springboard from which to generate self-referrals/referrals to other Amex cards.

Take for example @striker1064 ’s post from last week, where he was able to generate a referral link worth 15k MR to refer P2, posted that link into an incognito window, and was able to pull up the enhanced incognito offer on the personal Plat for 75k MR after $5k MSR in 3 months. Now, if you aren’t having any luck getting the 100k MR personal Plat offer, you could use a BBP to generate a referral link worth 15k MR for yourself to use, open that link in an incognito window under different browsers/settings repeatedly until you come upon the 75k MR enhanced offer, then apply for the enhanced offer using your own referral. You’d get a 75k MR welcome bonus and 15k MR referral bonus, netting you 90k combined MRs, which is just 10k MR shy of the elusive 100k MR offer. Not bad! And if this trick sticks around til the latter half of November, you can even time it to do a triple dip on the Plat’s airline fee credit.

ETA: We had some discussion about two weeks ago whether the conventional wisdom that getting an Amex card, particularly a MR-earning card, will decrease your chances of being targeted for the 100k MR Plat holds true anymore. Several members here have gotten Amex MR-earning biz cards and co-branded card’s, and have still gotten targeted for the 100k MR Plat.

Thank you, Lain! Great info and very helpful, as usual!!

I'm asking about this for my cousin. He has no MR cards currently. He's definitely itching to get going right away with earning MR's. So, when you say the 'vanilla' plat, is this what I just got? Basically just the non-branded plat? I see that term 'vanilla plat' a lot and have never know what y'all were referring to. Is cardmatch the best place to check for a targeted offer? I *think* that is how I got mine but I really just do what y'all tell me to do and don't always remember what I did lol. If the plat AF is too much to deal with, then start with BBP and self refer for BGR?

My kids love the whole Narnia series, and yes, we began with 'Lion, Witch & Wardrobe'. I think it's the best one to start with. It's still a fav here! Will start reading it to my boys soon as our night time read aloud. Working our way through the Little House series right now :)

My son is prone to nightmares so he has no interest in either Macbeth or Humger games. Says they are nightmare material.

Smart kid!

My older daughter did not get into these either - sacrilege, since I've read them all about a hundred times.

I loved the Philip Pullman books (read them as an adult), but I found they affected me deeply emotionally. Probably one of those instances where adults (esp. parents!) find things more scary/upsetting than kids would, just due to additional life perspective. I also think that they can be a little bit tough to get in to - there is a lot of unexplained plot at the beginning, you need to be patient for a while until you figure out what is going on. Totally works from a literary perspective, but not every middle schooler is ready to just go with an author for several chapters until things become clearer.

Funny to be talking about Narnia and Golden Compass at the same time - so many similar themes, but such different perspectives on those themes. I loved both series.

I'm firmly in the "The Lion" goes first camp - I loved coming back around to the Magicians Nephew after reading all the other books.

Good luck with the half! I ran it a couple of times before my injury and it's a fun race. Of course it was back when it was at night and soooo hot with not always great visibility so that made it even more challenging (for me anyway). Hopefully you'll have good weather :shamrock:

Thanks! I did it two years ago so never at night. I'm looking forward to the heat though to keep my muscles warm. I don't get warm enough running in the cold and things start to hurt.

My older daugher wasn't interested in Narnia, Little House, Anne of Green Gables - any of those! Fortunately my little one is all over Little House and Anne (and I'm sure she will dig Narnia when we get there). We are halfway through On the Banks of Plum Creek at the moment. Speaking of books that seem scarier as an adult than they did when I read them as a kid - those pioneers did not lack for courage!

I really need to get over there! I'll let you know when I make it!
Can you send them to me :)
They are one my "treasured well worn books" shelf. :rotfl: But the worst was when I had to buy a new copy of Where the Red Fern Grows, because I read mine so much the cover fell off!

I want to do this some day. Reading books to the kids was my favorite part of baby sitting growing up. And all of the parents were asking me how I got their kids interested in books, because they'd start taking them to mom and dad to read. I was like, I just sat down with them to read!

I've never read Narnia or Little House though. I did read LW&W once, but didn't really get into it at the time. Maybe I should try again.

Exactly. The vanilla Plat is just the plain ol’ Amex-only personal Platinum, not Biz, Ameriprise, Charles Schwab, Mercedes-Benz, or Goldman Sachs. See: Different Flavors Of The American Express Platinum Card.

To check for the 100k MR Platinum, I’d look at CardMatch and Amex’s own site for pre-qualified offers. Amex seems to target through CardMatch in waves, so one might check and not be targeted, and then check back later (not same day “later”) and find themselves targeted (usually with news on the blogs that a bunch of new people got targeted too). So if your cousin wants to hold out for the 100k MR Plat, keep checking periodically.

If your cousin decides to just go for the BBP, that’s fine too. It’s $0 AF, so no cost to him. Just remember to generate a referral link for him from your Plat for the 15k MR bonus, navigate from the Plat referral page to the referral page for the BBP, and send that link to him to apply from.

Once he’s been approved for the BBP, he can generate his own 15k MR self-referral links from the BBP, copy it into an incognito window, navigate to whatever card he’s interested in — whether that’s the BGR or Plat, and apply. (If he’s going for the Plat, just make sure he’s pulling the 75k MR incognito offer and not just applying for the public 60k MR offer.)

Magician's Nephew, definitely is the best of that series. Wondered why they never made that one into a movie. My user name is the same on Goodreads as here. Just joined a week ago.
