I love credit cards so much!

So jealous of everyone getting the express pass... I really thought about staying in one of the Universal hotels for our trip, but I just couldn't justify spending the cash when I had Hilton points to stay at the Doubletree at the gates for free. I figure as long as we're able to use our URs to buy tickets, we'll just pay cash for the express passes if we really need them.

When are you going? We went 2 days the first week of Nov 2 years ago and were fine. We did rope drop which helped but nothing was too bad. We did skip Hulk, but it had just opened so the lines were nuts and single rider got closed due to how long it was. We kept watching it hoping we could do it. I think the longest my friend waited was for the HP ride in Studios. I got so bored watching the streetmosphere but I was done with rides by that point. The US parks were less busy than Disney but it was Jersey week.

As I am scouring the internet for a backup fall break plan, I am very grateful for my little hobby here, and of course all of you for making it possible.

We are supposed to go to the panhandle next week. I am waiting until the sun comes up tomorrow and see the damage in Fort Walt Beach and Pensacola before I cancel. I am optimistic that since the storm is further east, we may be able to proceed with one of these 2 places.
If not, I have pieced together options of the Bahamas (Atlantis of baha mar) or San Juan. DH also mentioned Chicago...but color me unexcited for that. HHI is another option. All these are possible only because I can piece together points to get it done. Such piece of mind we can salvage our week, while also feeling the weight of what those in FL are facing. As a Charlestonian I am all too familiar with the wrath of a cat 4 storm.

Does this sound like a good signup bonus for the AMEX Business Card? 125,000 points for $3,000 spend with a $95 AF. Also how strict is AMEX as far as spending on their business cards? Is all expected to be spent at office supply stores basically?

Yes it is

Worth it?
AMEX has been testing a lot of different offers on the Hilton Biz card:
I think it was first: 125k + $50 stmt credit (AF not waived)
Then it was: 100k + $100 stmt credit (AF waived)

Now it sounds like there is a new dummy booking offer out there:
125k Hilton points PLUS $100 stmt credit (AF not waived)

I think the former offers actually were requiring a $5k MSR so the $3k MSR is a definite improvement here.

This offer actually beats the public offer and support link offers. To get it you have to go in, pretend to create an actual hilton booking, enter your name and info and get to the payment screen. You should see an Ad popup for a card...click it...then click the "business card" tab and you can apply from there (Make sure you're on the business card tab though!)

As far as whether this offer is worth it...125k Hilton points is probably worth $600-$750 on a $3,000 MSR (so in my book that's a decent return). There is no good backup use for Hilton points (i.e. no gift card option or anything), so make sure you have a use for them for hotel stays! The $100 stmt credit fully offsets the AF and puts $5 in your pocket.

EDIT: I also forget the whole "self-referral" thing with AMEX. IF you have a card you can self-refer with that might actually make more sense than what I said above, LOL!

We went the first week of Nov in 2015 and 2017 and experienced the same - no express pass necessary!

Just Amex and Chase vying for the business. I think the SPG Lux is the superior card of the two. It has a higher AF but you get Priority Pass, Boingo Wifi, and GE/TSA credit. If you don't use those benefits then I would look at it as a difference of $55 in AF (bc of the $300 credit on SPG Lux) for getting a room worth up to 50K/nt vs 35K/nt.

Thanks. That is pretty much what we were seeing, too, so I was surprised the Marriott card was still there. We could definitely use that $300 credit. Now to get back to my notes and work on some sort of strategy.

For those of you who have booked refundable hotels etc with URs through Chase travel online.....has anyone had the number of URs need go down ?
I’ve been checking my hotel reservation for changes like I do with my SW flights booked with points....no change so far....just wondering if there is a day of the week etc when pricing may be adjusted....Thanks
Yep. I’ve had it go down on multiple occasions, never noticed a pattern. A word of caution if you don’t have a lot of URs: I did have once where the Hilton hotel’s system was down and my URs didn’t refund immediately and required multiple calls back and forth and it was a couple weeks before I got the refund as they refused to refund until they got the money back from Hilton no matter how high up the chain I ran it. That was only once and it was a really weird case but had I needed those URs to immediately re-book I would have been screwed.

Okay Thank you for all that! Just one last...Should I be concerned that my business is a "business"? Other words small side business. Will they watch my spending? Thanks

BofA DP - Just canceled my personal AS card (@Lain can you mark that down :rotfl:) and Sylvia was super nice, it was weird, best call I've ever had. She asked why and I explained the AF, better rewards cards blah blah. She went over a travel card I could get, but I was unsure if it would have been a new app or a PC but it was basically the CFU but with no foreign transaction fees. I turned it down. She canceled the card and did say the AF should be gone since it's cancelled and that if it's not to call back. I double checked because when I got my statement email last week there was nothing due but when I called this morning the AF had hit.

Also odd was she said I'd been a customer since 99, while true there were a few years there that I didn't have any of their products so I thought that was interesting. She also said that even though I don't have any cards I'm still a member of their family. So clearly she couldn't see my AS biz card, which does have a different 800 number.

Now if my magic bands would just get delivered, the tracking hasn't been updated and USPS Help has been ignoring my tweet. Hoping they just continued to screw it all up and it'll be here otherwise I'm going to the post office and try to be nice.

Thanks...my thoughts were to only rebook if I had enough URs to make the new reservation, then cancel the old

I've done that. I don't know for sure, but I just figured the price drops were the normal trying to sell rooms as they get closer type of thing.
Thanks...good to know...the trips are in December....and March so plenty of time for prices to hopefully drop

Nov. 10-11. Honestly I'm expecting long lines since we're going over a holiday weekend. We'll just make do or buy passes though. I figure we have two days and last time we went to USO was 10 years ago and only for one day and we still got A LOT done. And that was about 4 days before Christmas.

After looking at all the cards last night, I'll have a bunch of questions to ask as I go through all my notes. But first, just curious, but what is the deal with there being both a Marriott card and the new SPG Lux card out? Didn't they merge? We are looking at the Lux and want to make sure we don't make a mistake in not getting the Marriott one. :confused3

Marriott did acquire Starwood, and merged their rewards programs on about 8/18. However, the separate Marriott, Starwood, and Ritz-Carlton umbrella brands will continue to exist into next year, when presumably they’ll all be merged into Marriott (or some other new name).

Chase held Marriott’s credit card portfolio, and Amex held Starwood’s SPG portfolio. Chase has the Marriott Business and Premier Plus consumer cards. Amex has the SPG Business, Personal, and now Luxury cards. With the merger, the combined Marriott (which we sometimes call Starriott) renegotiated its credit card offerings with Chase and Amex. The result is that in early 2019, Chase will be the issuer of Marriott’s mass consumer and premium (the Premier Plus) consumer cards; Amex will be the issuer of the small business (the SPG Business) and super premium consumer (SPG Lux) cards. We can probably expect Chase to discontinue the Marriott Biz and Amex to discontinue the SPG Personal cards in early 2019, and perhaps some rebranding to whatever unified hotel brand Starriott decides to become. Best guess seems to be that current cardholders of the Marriott Biz and SPG Personal cards will be grandfathered in and can continue to hold their cards if they want to.

As for which card to apply for? If you’re under 5/24, focus on Chase’s Sapphire and Ink cards first; and after you are at or over 5/24, you can start looking around.

Do you already have any SPG/Marriott cards? After you are 5/24, and assuming no SPG/Marriott cards, I would focus on the Amex SPG cards and avoid the Chase Marriott cards for now, and maybe try for the Chase Marriott cards if you can get back under 5/24 in about two years.

The reason is under new restrictions that went into effect on 8/26/18, getting any of the Marriott cards now would, generally speaking, disqualify you from the Amex SPG cards for the next two years (and vice versa). See https://viewfromthewing.boardingare...r-marriott-and-starwood-credit-card-approval/

Given the choice between Chase Marriott and Amex SPG cards, the math makes the choice clearer: 2<3. There are currently 2 Chase Marriott cards (the Marriott Premier Plus and the Marriott Biz), compared with 3 Amex SPG cards (the SPG Personal, SPG Biz, and SPG Lux).

The bonuses are richer on the Amex SPG-side too. If you go through all 3 Amex SPG cards, at their current offers, that’s a combined 275k Marriott points from the welcome bonuses alone. The SPG Biz currently has a 100k Marriott points after $5k/3 months MSR offer, first year annual fee waived (offer expires 10/31/18); the SPG Personal has a 75k Marriott points after $3k/3 months MSR offer, first year annual fee waived; and the SPG Luxury has a 100k Marriott points public offer (125k Marriott points targeted offer) after $5k/3 months spend, $450 AF not waived.

Keep in mind the SPG Personal is supposed to be discontinued sometime in early 2019, when the Starriott brands completely merge and Chase gets the consumer and premium consumer cards, and Amex gets the super premium consumer and small business cards. If you go for the Chase Marriott cards first, you disqualify yourself from the Amex SPG cards and won't be able to hit the SPG Personal card and bonus before it's discontinued. While some people suggest waiting for the SPG Personal to raise its offer (because 75k Marriott is equivalent to the old 25k Starpoints offer), there’s no telling how much longer the SPG Personal card will still be around. But maybe Amex will make one final push to attract signups with a higher offer for the SPG Personal before discontinuing the card?

The Chase Marriott cards are both offering 75k Marriott points right now with a $3k/3 months MSR, AFs not waived. (Compare with Amex SPG Personal and Biz cards that waive the first year AF.) That’s just 150k Marriott points combined.

Getting one of the Amex SPG cards has no preclusive effect on getting another SPG card under the post-8/26 rules. But it will disqualify you from getting a Chase Marriott card for about 2 years. Remember, Amex welcome offers are generally once per lifetime, so you won’t be coming back to churn those cards again. Getting the SPG Personal and Luxury will add cards to your */24 count, but they’d make you ineligible for the Chase Marriott cards for 25-27 months (24 months after bonus received) anyway. And in about 2 years, these cards will drop off, and assuming you're under 5/24, you can see about going for the Chase Marriott card(s) then. Note that by then, Chase will probably have discontinued the Marriott Biz because the small business card product is supposed to belong to Amex. But perhaps Chase will raise the Marriott Premier Plus back up to 100k Marriott points at some point?

Ok Spg/Marriot..... can I still pool points between household members? I can't find a way to do it on the new site....

Under the new Marriott program, you can transfer points to any Marriott Rewards member (not just within the household); however you’re limited to transferring 100k per year and have to pay a $10 fee per transaction unless you’re a Gold or Platinum Elite member.
