I love credit cards so much!

I'll admit to being a little slow on this one, but I just realized that our local Office Depot/Max is on the MPX app. With the coding on Chase ccs now passing through again on MPX, can I use MPX with my CIC to buy gift cards at Office Depot/Max and stack the MPX miles with the 5x UR? Or will Office Max not let me pay for a gc at checkout using a gift card app like MPX?

1. Yes, using CIC to buy OD/OM/Staples eGCs on MPX will earn you 5x UR.

2. Staples is currently 5 miles/$ for a back to school promotion and OD/OM is 4 miles/$.

3. Unfortunately, OD/OM/Staples will not let you buy gift cards with their gift cards.

Crazy enough we have more than enough Disney Rewards card balances to cover ALL of that WDW already LOL! When I say I Don't spend on travel...I really don't spend, lol. We'll book 3 SW flights in the next year so that's 8 x $5.60 x 3 = $134.40 I can use LOL! I'll probably find a way somehow, don't take up a collection for good ole' SFF - he'll get his travel credit somehow :) hahaha
Yes but even if you have Disney Rewards, you could use the travel credit and save the Disney $ for another time or Christmas/birthday presents. For the most part, I don’t spend on travel either. I don’t have as many points as you but use them wisely enough, I don’t need to pay.

Thanks. So just to make absolute sure on #3, I can’t use the MPX app to pay for a Disney gc at OD/OM in store at check-out?

Hello ILCCSM peeps! DH recently got a job where he is driving A LOT. What CC would you recommend for the best return on gas purchases year round?

1. I think if you take the offer to upgrade you’re SPG Personal to the SPG Lux, you should be able to continue using your Personal card until you receive the Lux, which would allow you to put those decent sized expenses on your card now rather than waiting for Monday.

Supporting this is the fact that the SPG Lux is supposed to give you Platinum status if you spend $75k on it a year, and if you upgrade your SPG Personal all spend on that card this year is supposed to count towards the $75k.

I would probably check your Amex account after accepting the upgrade offer to see that it’s been updated to reflect a SPG Lux account, and confirm via chat that you can keep using the SPG Personal card until you receive the Lux and that ongoing spend on the Personal counts towards the upgrade bonus.

This may have been discussed on r/churning but I haven’t had much time to catch up there today.

2. Agreed with @tink1970 - consider if you can really make the $15k spend that you’re estimating (I’m guessing between the BGR and SPG Lux). It’d be a shame if you miss out on the 100k Marriott points bonus. The SPG Lux card is a $450 AF (I’m assuming you’ll basically be charged that upon upgrading) that’s offset by a $300 Marriott credit. Everything else, the Biz Plat you want to get also offers (SPG/Marriott Gold Elite status, PP Lounge, GE/PreCheck). So if you don’t get the 100k Marriott points, you’ll be essentially prepaying $300 to Amex for a paid Marriott stay in the next year, and maybe you can get GE/PreCheck for one of your girls. There’s certainly value in the 50k FN certificate, but the terms say it’ll be deposited to your Marriott account 8-12 weeks after your anniversary and your card needs to be open at the time. I haven’t seen any DPs how soon after the card’s anniversary these certs are being deposited, and I’m not up to speed on Amex’s policy of refunding or prorating AF after cancelation and how long you have to do it, but that’s something to consider about when thinking about canceling.

3. With at least three DISers reporting the no welcome bonus warning, I’m feeling very cautious around Amex now. I don’t think number or velocity of card openings matters as much as putting regular spend on your cards, but clearly how many cards you’ve opened is a factor because the warning expressly mentions history, including the number of cards you’ve opened and closed. Even if number of cards opened may not weigh as heavily in Amex’s anti-churning formula, as a practical matter the more Amex cards I open the more I’m going to have to spread out my spend to keep those cards and my relationship with Amex in good standing, and the more I’ll eventually have to decide to close.

Earlier this morning, I would’ve suggested what most of r/churning probably would’ve said, use your SPG Personal to self refer yourself for the SPG Lux, get approved for the 100k and pocket another 20k referral bonus. Then take the upgrade offer on the SPG Personal > Lux for another 100k. But if you value your relationship with Amex, and want to go back for a Plat in a few months, I probably would opt taking the upgrade offer if I wanted the SPG Lux rather than opening another card.

And like you said, it doesn’t take up another */24 slot.

(Personally, I did not receive an upgrade offer on my SPG Lux, so that was not even an option. I have been hitting Amex pretty hard this year and have decided to put off applying for the BGR until next year to give myself some time to cool off, put some spend on my Amexes, and try to make use of Amex Offers and bonus categories.)

Thanks guys! Yes I almost wish I didn't have the offer anymore as that would make it an easy decision. I actually thought I could have my DH get it now but then I got on there and he has no offer at all (despite the fact that if anything he has put more spend on that card and we have both had the SPG Personal the same amount of time). Getting an upgrade offer and what the offer is seems pretty random. Only card from Amex I haven't been using on a fairly regular basis is my Delta Platinum Personal so I will start using it a bit too.

I am pretty sure we can make the $15k but I will think about it tonight. I have Plastiq set up as a club membership for the mortgage right now. I know no guarantees but if Plastiq would work with Amex our $2k a month mortgage would obviously make a huge dent. Decisions!

So DH won't do business cards and is locked out of Sapphire for 23 months, correct?

So for co-brands I'd probably look at Hyatt and United since you're obtaining the CP for SW then either double dipping or obtaining the CIP next summer.

United flies to Australia (and most everywhere else!) and Hyatt has one of the top rated hotel in Sydney (review from Lucky https://onemileatatime.com/review-park-hyatt-sydney-2/), plus if you decided to stay elsewhere you can always use them when visiting DS.

Then I'd weigh whether Marriott or Hilton should be your next card again spacing them all out nicely--perhaps Hilton to take a break from Chase?

I'm sure others will be more helpful with the timing...I'm lol/24 so not sure what the best way to time the applications (every 3 or 4 months?).

Thank you! I've had my eye on the Sydney Park Hyatt for a while

I'm leaning toward the Hyatt first for dh because of getting the free anniversary night sooner :D And then the United card near the first of the year (just the regular one, not the Club one with the $450 af lol)

Thanks. So just to make absolute sure on #3, I can’t use the MPX app to pay for a Disney gc at OD/OM in store at check-out?

No, because with MPX, you’re buying an e-gift card that you use to pay the merchant. MPX is not a method of payment on its own.

This is a very depressing day. After I got the popup for the Aspire, I thought, "What the heck, my credit is unlocked until the end of the month, since I'm not getting the Aspire, I may as well apply for another card." Applied for the Citi Premier with the 60k bonus. DENIED. :headache:

What is going on???? I never get denied! According to the FICO link on my Citi account, my score is in the 820's!! I have only ever had one other Citi card, the Double Cash, and we use it regularly. Why does everybody hate me???:(:( I feel so rejected.:badpc:

I'm glad I'm going out to dinner with my sister tonight (using the CPK Amex offer, natch) so that I can take my mind off of this bloodbath.:crazy2:

Yep. Just wishing it worked, lol. Could have used MPX for the school supply purchase I did over the weekend though. Doh! Oh well, will remember for the next (rare) time I actually purchase hard goods at OM/OD.

Almost 7 years. Unless I missed it, length of membership wasn’t mentioned in the Amex bonus denial data collection spreadsheet. I’d think that’s important as a sort of “bustout” factor. Attracting and retaining new credit card customers is expensive, and Amex wants to attract new members who use their cards over years, not someone who’s attracted only to the bonuses and leaves when the well is dry.

While only two DPs (you and myself, although perhaps others can chime in since @schmass confirmed she has only had an Amex since March 2018), it seems length of relationship MAY have some bearing, along with ongoing spend. I was JUST approved for the SPG Lux, which makes it the 6th Amex card I've been approved for since March. You and I have been on a near identical trajectory with Amex while others who haven't hit Amex nearly AS hard are getting the pop-up instead. You have a seven year relationship with Amex while I have nine years (now, opening the ED back in college seems like a grand idea ).

OH, and they gave me a 22K CL on the Lux :scared1:. Guess I'll need to check and see how much more they took from my ED and BCP...

Yes I almost wish I didn't have the offer anymore as that would make it an easy decision.

THIS. Sometimes I wish I never saw an offer...cause these days, it just makes me :faint: piling on the MSRs...

We went in February. Stayed at a Hyatt Place and it was nice! SpringHill Suites tend to be nice so you’ll be fine. You are closer than we were and found the walk easy. We were close to a Disney parking lot so took the bus a lot.
I liked the ease and non planning involving DL. Of course my kids (8,11) preferred DW but still loved it. Def get Maxpass. It was so easy and we seriously hardly waited for any rides. Just takes a little research!
Thanks, will definitely get Maxpass!

We haven't stayed at the Springhill Suites, but we stayed at the Residence Inn next door, that I think was built around the same time (I think it's the same number of points too and I highly recommend it!), this summer and it was very nice. I didn't think it was a bad walk at all, but then we frequently stay around the corner of Harbor and Katella when we go to DL, so I'm used to it. I have seen people on the Dis say that that area is a long walk.

As far as tips, after our first trip with Max Pass this summer, I would say definitely get it! Paying an extra $10 per person per day makes me so bitter as someone who grew up going to DL, but I have to admit that it worked out really well and makes it so easy to get those big rides in.
Thanks! I feel so out if my element with this last minute trip!11

Glad you could make a booking, but bummer about the wrong dates. Good thing you caught that! If you can switch, I recommend the Springhill Suites Anaheim Resort/Convention Center on Harbor Blvd. It’s closer, newer, walkable to the parks, and located above a CVS which is super convenient. The other one, Maingate, is on Ball Rd and does not have easy access to the parks. You would need to take the ART shuttle or drive. Hope they can switch that for you.
It's a cat 5 unfortunately, which won't work, but thank you for the suggestion!
I was able to switch the dates today, after being on hold off and on for 2 hrs 20 minutes!
I did the survey! It will be interesting to see what everyone figures out.

Also never been ask for my Costco card. Just had the reservation number in hand and that is generally all they ask for. I too had about 8-9 reservations going back in June, as placeholders until we could decided

Since DPs seem to be all over the map, and myself and @Lain probably being more serious "offenders" you would think IF the velocity were an issue (yet we put additional spend on our cards post-MSR), but have to wonder if length of relationship with Amex makes a difference? @Lain how long is your relationship with Amex? According to my homepage, myself and Amex have a nine-year (and counting) love affair :D. @schmass, @LynnTH , and @magickingdomprincess?
I only have a 6 month relationship. Could definitelybe a factor.

I stayed at Hyatt Place. I think there was a Springhill right next door. You literally cross the street and there is a bus stop in the Parking lot. Mickey and friends and I believe we were Toy Story. Busses we never too full like WDW and it took 10 minutes or so. We did walk one morning. We are a pretty fit group probably took less than a half hour.
Thanks! With the kiddos will probably take a shuttle but goid to hear it's doable!

Geez... I’m wondering if it has to do with using the same browser? Anyone willing to try again from a different browser? Just a thought, it could be that Amex is getting stingy.
Nice thought, I might try again later. Although with all the other does it seems unlikely.

I finally got my $150 from Chase for opening a savings account. Geez that felt like a lifetime ago (it was three months).
I had the opposite experience! Checked my chase account and was surprised mine postedso fast!

I have used only National for years now. It's super easy to walk out to the lot (or take a shuttle, depending on the airport) and pick a car. There are aisles labelled "Emerald Club" (pick a car from there) and then there is the Executive Club aisle(s). Then as you're leaving they check your ID.

Now that I have Executive status, it's even better (more/nicer cars). I was tempted to pick the mini cooper in chapel hill but DD's luggage wouldn't fit!

ETA-It's the amex platinum that confers Executive status (both business and personal) so if you have that it's a bump up in status.

Thanks for the info. Have you ever booked through National cars through Chase UR and then used the Emerald/Executive Aisle? I just wondered if there were any issues since it is so nice to just walk out to the cars. I have the AmexBiz Plat, but it is my DH that rents all the cars. He lost his Executive status since he takes uber most of the time now. If he didn't have 5 AmEx already, he could apply for AmexBiz Plat.

Hello ILCCSM peeps! DH recently got a job where he is driving A LOT. What CC would you recommend for the best return on gas purchases year round?

Right now the CF has gas stations at the bonus category. My dh drives a ton too so I have him using that this quarter. I think it was gas earlier this year too. Alternatively, the Costco Citi card is good for gas....4%.
