I love credit cards so much!

Might have spoken too soon. Both offers showed and I swear worked fine when I posted them - and I went to check one minute later and now the links are showing as not available? I hope this is a glitch, maybe it's a cookie problem or something for me because I just saw someone mention the LUX referral on Reddit as well

There's something going on with new AmEx links. churningreferrals updated the Wiki for posting the links there. Might help: https://www.reddit.com/r/churningreferrals/wiki/link-formatting#wiki_amex

Knock on wood all my "old" links work still so I hope it all gets worked out by the time I get hubby to generate a Hilton Biz so I don't have to go through rigamarole to post it.

This is actually an issue we're dealing with on r/churningreferrals with AMEX links...

If you go back to the link that has your name in it (Refer.Amex.Us) it will work...it's strange but try it...

Were karma requirements ever created for churning referrals?

Hi everyone! New to this thread :) I apologize if this is a really dumb question, but I have such little experience in this department and am a bit over my head reading through the thread. The only credit card I have is the Discover IT chrome card.

I'm going on my honeymoon next year, and we are either doing a Disney/Punta Cana double trip, or a trip to Hawaii. I'd love to pay for our flights using points from a card sign-up (thinking the Chase Sapphire Preferred). We'd fly SW if we did the Disney/Punta Cana trip, and either American or United for the Hawaii trip if we did that (hopefully in first class)!

My main question is - I need to spend $4,000 in the first three months with the CSP to get the bonus. If I pay my rent for two months, I'll be over $4,000 (with other misc. purchases). Would that count, or is rent/mortgage/home payments excluded for some reason?

Sorry if that's a dumb question, and if anyone has any tips for me they would be greatly appreciated :)

Hello! Welcome!

As @Lain mentioned, I used points to offset some of my honeymoon. It is what got me involved in this hobby.

My quick example - We had a 3 week wedding/honeymoon trip to Orlando - did 3 days at Universal, 10 days at Disney World, got married somewhere in there ;), then had a 3 night cruise (gift from in-laws) and a night in Cocoa Beach. Universal/Disney hotel stays were on site. We started out thinking we'd open 2 hotel credit cards, 2 Disney Visa credit cards, and a SW card for flight points. I will fully admit I fell down the rabbit hole on this hobby and we opened more cards then that, and earned more points which we've used to take many many more trips since then (5 more plus we have 3 more planned, including 2 in Sept) to Disney and beyond. Our wedding was a great opportunity because we already had the cash for everything, so we just charged it to a card and then paid it off.

I started about a year out, here's where we ended up:
  • 7 nights at the Dolphin on points, just paid resort fee which came to $197 (rack rate - $1657)
  • 5 nights at BLT studio theme park view with a DVC rental, redeemed some points towards this and paid $820 (dvc rental rate - $1370, rack rate - $3357)
  • 1 night in Cocoa Beach at a La Quinta on the beach with all points (rack rate - $178)
  • SW flights all on points, paid $82 for fees plus early bird check in (rack rate - $456)
All together we paid $1099 for something that was going to cost us at least $3500 in cash (and I was assuming I could get a dvc rental for a standard studio at BWV during F&W... little did I know!)

Since our wedding/honeymoon trip, we've redeemed points for a ridiculous $18k in travel - now that is rack rate, and we never would have paid that. But it allowed us to stay at a Deluxe resort vs a Value, for example; take a Christmas trip down to WDW; and book a last minute Labor Day weekend trip to do the waterparks down there (we leave in 8 days!), extend a wedding trip to visit Disneyland, go to Nashville for a weekend for a concert... I posted this on another thread as an example:

I have been doing it for about 2 years now and we've had free flights (DH and I) for 6 trips, and for 3 more trips before the end of this year. All in it is about $4200 in flights, instead we pay $22.40 each time. Without points we would not have taken as many trips, we would have taken 3-4 of them and it would have cost us $1400-$1800. I've also covered a large chunk of hotel costs with points. Our credit scores were in the 740s when we started and are now in the low 800s.

Everyone here is super friendly and helpful, so fire away with all questions! I see you've already gotten a bit on paying rent from others. I'd definitely run plans by those here, as there are lots of details to this hobby and we can help catch any issues before you run into them :)

You can do as much or as little as you'd like with this, and everyone here will be ready to help! We have people who travel all sorts of ways, all different family sizes, and to all different places. We've all been just starting out and full of questions. I still am :)

I assume that is actually the PRG (Premier Rewards Gold) card? That's a good offer (especially the $1k spend) but you can regularly find offers for 50k for $2k spend on that card. I WOULD NOT waste a 5/24 slot on an Amex PRG with all the Chase cards that are still available to you.

What other Chase Cards would you recommend? He would be able to do CSR/CSP double dip sometime starting in January. He has the CIP (may get EIN and get that again as he just got end of May). He has SW cards that he got January 2018 so has to wait a bit on getting those again. I don't think there is anymore UR cards except business but want to be careful on those and spread them out and don't want to ruin chances of double dip.

In Skagway so haven’t read disboards since Monday. Confirming that you can get spg bonus if you have gotten a Marriott bonus in the last two years. Anything else I should know?

Which SPG bonus? The SPG Personal? Looks like you’re eligible as long as you haven’t held the listed Marriott cards in the last 30 days.

You can't PM until you have 10 messages.

I'll just tell you about it RIGHT HERE :) If you want to join you need a Reddit account. If you already have one then just tell me your reddit name in a reply. IF you don't have one, register at Reddit.com. A lot of people use the same or a similar name there as they do here. Then I'll get you a welcome message with all the links and such :)

Yikes!!! I messed up that multiple quotes post a few posts up. I just signed up for Reddit. I used Missyson for that account as well.

Turns out our place doesn't accept CC payments for rent, darn. I do plan on buying a new camera lens soon, so I could still probably hit the 4k minimum if I tried hard enough.

In all likelihood, like 98% chance, we'll do Disney and fly Southwest. We don't travel frequently, as my fiance is in dental school, but I'll still go on family vacations once a year. When my fiance and I travel, we always fly Southwest. When I go with my family, there is a chance we go someplace that SW doesn't fly to, which I'll fly United in that case. Not sure if the SW card is still the better option? We would probably exhaust all the points for the flights for both of us for the honeymoon, though.

Thank you!!

Does your fiancé’s dental school accept credit card payments for tuition? If not, you could use credit cards on Plastiq to send checks to pay tuition as well as rent.

If you’re open to applying for business credit cards, Chase offers some of their most lucrative bonuses for their business cards, and they don’t show up on your personal credit reports, don’t count against Chase’s 5/24 rule, and aren’t subject to the 20% cap on payments through Plastiq.

Well, that's a good question, hahaha! Sounds like his 3/24 is 2 SW cards and a Barclay Aviator. He won't have another card drop off until Jan 2020 so if you go 5/24+ now it's over. Obviously you can make your own choices so don't feel like you need to listen to me, HAHA.

IF I were in that stage though I'd probably do:
09/18 = CIC (still 3/24)
01/19 = A Chase Personal Card (Freedom - if you have one and can refer him, Marriott, Hyatt, United) if any of those interest you (now 4/24)
05/19 = EIN CIP (still 4/24)
08/19 = CSR/CSP double dip (now 6/24 but 2 cards drop off in Jan 2020).

In between all of that you could get AMEX biz cards, plat, bgr, SPG biz.

It's just a thought...but do what you feel is best. :) It's hard to play this game when it feels like both a sprint AND a marathon at the same time...

My old links still work, even generated an old link that was able to link straight to the apply page still just fine. At this point for my cards it's limited to the links that just came out for SPG personal and Lux.

I opted for the "secure method" someone mentioned there so it did take like another minute to carefully change the URL but I feel better about posting them now :)

Good to know. Are the Amex Delta bonuses good right now, or should I wait?

Looks like the personal platinum is at 70000 miles and 10000 Medallion Qualification Miles with a $3000 spend in 3 months. That does carry a $195 fee. I think that's a pretty good offer for that card, but I know someone else probably knows better if it can go higher.

DH is so out of touch with this sometimes, it cracks me up. I send him @SouthFayetteFans awesome trip, and his response...

Wow, that's awesome!!!!!

What are UR points?
Oh Zack...just do you what you do best...

Only some of my AMEX links are working, but also, all the editing I did to my links yesterday, updating offers etc, is all gone.

IF you're interested in Delta business cards, that can be a good move. You probably don't want to use slots right now on Delta personal cards as there are potentially better (more lucrative) cards out there for you to get. That said, everybody's card strategy will be different.

So you just go to the mgmee link and go to the spot where it's like S:O:U:T:H:F:A and change those letters, right?

Unfortunately, his tuition is about $25,000 a semester, and I definitely don't have a credit limit near high enough to cover that :rotfl:. But the Plastiq tip is a really good one! I'll look into doing that for my rent to get me to the minimum spend.

His 3/24 is:
4/17 - Barclay Arrival + (closed)
1/18 - SW Plus (and Business but that doesn't count)
7/18 - Barclay Arrival + (Tried again and was approved)

His CSR was PC's to a Freedom. He has had the SPG Cards but not Marriott so that is a possibility. Hyatt is a Maybe. Probably not United. He does have another card dropping off in April.

For sure need to keep a spot for the CSR/CSP. I will also be able to double dip beginning of next year. Both kids will be in college next fall so would be much easier to do those at that time when paying tuition.

Arrghhh... why does this need to be so difficult. So many rules!!
