Hi everyone! New to this thread

I apologize if this is a really dumb question, but I have such little experience in this department and am a bit over my head reading through the thread. The only credit card I have is the Discover IT chrome card.
I'm going on my honeymoon next year, and we are either doing a Disney/Punta Cana double trip, or a trip to Hawaii. I'd love to pay for our flights using points from a card sign-up (thinking the Chase Sapphire Preferred). We'd fly SW if we did the Disney/Punta Cana trip, and either American or United for the Hawaii trip if we did that (hopefully in first class)!
My main question is - I need to spend $4,000 in the first three months with the CSP to get the bonus. If I pay my rent for two months, I'll be over $4,000 (with other misc. purchases). Would that count, or is rent/mortgage/home payments excluded for some reason?
Sorry if that's a dumb question, and if anyone has any tips for me they would be greatly appreciated
Hello! Welcome!
As
@Lain mentioned, I used points to offset some of my honeymoon. It is what got me involved in this hobby.
My quick example - We had a 3 week wedding/honeymoon trip to Orlando - did 3 days at Universal, 10 days at Disney World, got married somewhere in there

, then had a 3 night cruise (gift from in-laws) and a night in Cocoa Beach. Universal/Disney hotel stays were on site. We started out thinking we'd open 2 hotel credit cards, 2 Disney Visa credit cards, and a SW card for flight points. I will fully admit I fell down the rabbit hole on this hobby and we opened more cards then that, and earned more points which we've used to take many many more trips since then (5 more plus we have 3 more planned, including 2 in Sept) to Disney and beyond. Our wedding was a great opportunity because we already had the cash for everything, so we just charged it to a card and then paid it off.
I started about a year out, here's where we ended up:
- 7 nights at the Dolphin on points, just paid resort fee which came to $197 (rack rate - $1657)
- 5 nights at BLT studio theme park view with a DVC rental, redeemed some points towards this and paid $820 (dvc rental rate - $1370, rack rate - $3357)
- 1 night in Cocoa Beach at a La Quinta on the beach with all points (rack rate - $178)
- SW flights all on points, paid $82 for fees plus early bird check in (rack rate - $456)
All together we paid $1099 for something that was going to cost us at least $3500 in cash (and I was assuming I could get a dvc rental for a standard studio at BWV during F&W... little did I know!

)
Since our wedding/honeymoon trip, we've redeemed points for a ridiculous $18k in travel - now that is rack rate, and we never would have paid that. But it allowed us to stay at a Deluxe resort vs a Value, for example; take a Christmas trip down to WDW; and book a last minute Labor Day weekend trip to do the waterparks down there (we leave in 8 days!), extend a wedding trip to visit
Disneyland, go to Nashville for a weekend for a concert... I posted this on another thread as an example:
I have been doing it for about 2 years now and we've had free flights (DH and I) for 6 trips, and for 3 more trips before the end of this year. All in it is about $4200 in flights, instead we pay $22.40 each time. Without points we would not have taken as many trips, we would have taken 3-4 of them and it would have cost us $1400-$1800. I've also covered a large chunk of hotel costs with points. Our credit scores were in the 740s when we started and are now in the low 800s.
Everyone here is super friendly and helpful, so fire away with all questions! I see you've already gotten a bit on paying rent from others. I'd definitely run plans by those here, as there are lots of details to this hobby and we can help catch any issues before you run into them
You can do as much or as little as you'd like with this, and everyone here will be ready to help! We have people who travel all sorts of ways, all different family sizes, and to all different places. We've all been just starting out and full of questions. I still am
