I love credit cards so much!

I've wrapped up my MSR on my Hilton Biz (no points posted yet though) Trying to decide my next move. The next 2 cards I know I want are the CIP and a Southwest card. Not interested in the CP but would like the points because we fly my step-daughter down on Southwest each summer and thinking of doing a December trip for her this year in addition. We have a Southwest flight at the end of October so was thinking of applying then for a higher bonus.

Is it ok to go for CIP now and in 2 months a Southwest? Or is that too close?

Something else I should be considering instead?

Here's my stats:

1/18- CSP - 1/24
4/18- SPG Personal - 2/24
5/18- CIC - 2/24
6/18 - Hilton Biz - 2/24
So I assume you don't have a Player 2?

I think a CIP now is a good move. I think a SW card while in flight in Oct should be ok - but I'd lay off Chase then until Feb 2019. ALSO, even though you say that you aren't interested in the CP, if you can manage to have the SW bonus post on your January statement (which shouldn't be too hard with an end of Oct application) you'd still have the ability to earn a CP sometime in 2019 if you wanted to. It just keeps your options open.

So you were approved for the CIC on 5/11/18, which puts you past 3 months from your last Chase card. Chase very likely doesn’t know about the Hilton Biz. I’d go for the CIP now. Despite the Plastiq nerf, it’s still got a big 80k UR bonus. Late October is 2 months from now. I’d say you’re fine applying for an increased SW offer on your flight then. We typically recommend spacing apps out by 3 months to err on the conservative side. Many people successfully get by with just a 2 months gap, and that’s fine depending on how you space subsequent dips into the Chase well. You also have being under 5/24 on your side.

The only other offer I’d suggest right now is the 100k Marriott points for $5k MSR on the SPG Biz. It won’t add to your */24 count, and Chase may never know about the card if Amex doesn’t do a hard pull. Offhand, it doesn’t look like you have any Marriott cards that would disqualify you from getting this card after 8/26. The 100k offer ends 10/31/18, so it’s possible you could squeeze the SPG Biz between the CIP and SW cards, or at the end of October after the Chase cards if you find yourself with extra spend.

I’ve been putting 3 months between my Chase applications....CIP now is 3 months from your CIC .......towards the end of October could work

I thought I'd share my experience using Chase UR and AmEx MR to fly IcelandAir in July.

I transferred Chase UR points to Alaska miles for our outgoing flight. After purchasing IcelandAir tickets with Alaska miles, I was able to select seats on the IcelandAir website. All of the seats purchased with Alaska miles were Economy Standard and included a free checked bag.

I payed for our return flight with AmEx MR points, and I purchased the flight on the AmEx travel portal. After purchasing tickets, I was able to select seats on the IcelandAir website. Unfortunately, the seats via the AmEx portal were Economy Light and required an extra payment for baggage. At the time, I could not find a way to purchase Economy Standard via the AmEx travel portal.

Also, you should know that IcelandAir used to have 3 seating classes, but now there are only two - Economy and Saga. Even though there is only one Economy Class, on their narrow body jets, the first six rows of economy have much more leg room than the rest of the plane. (It's like Economy Plus on United or Delta Comfort+.) I was able to select these seats for our flights regardless of whether I purchased Economy Standard with Alaska miles or Economy Light with AmEx MR points.

How did you transfer UR to Alaska?

Sounds like they are planning to do an in-flight application on a plane in October (where the 50k offer is still available). Now - if Chase does a higher public SW offer (or ups the referrals again) then that'd be great!

I'm thinking about using UR to book flights to Europe. I finally got them to show up on the UR site, they are 643 so If I did the math right if I use my CSR then they'd be 43,066 each. We have 190,629 between DH and I. My plan is to buy 3 tickets with UR points and then to buy DH's ticket on his Capital One Venture Card and use the travel credit he has on there. I'd love some advice. They are open jaws tickets with a two day stopover in Iceland, then on to London and home from Paris. I've always transferred my UR to SW but booking through the portal seems OK in this case. Does this sound like a solid plan?

My only advice is to make sure that the tickets are linked with the airline. We had a situation a few years ago where I was booked with the girls on miles and we paid for my DH flight. The flight was delayed and they put DH on a different flight. It was a mess to get fixed!

Paranoid Ultimate Rewards Reminder

Earlier this year there were some unfounded rumors of Ultimate Rewards pooling between cards and family members potentially going away. The rumors don't appear to have ANY truth to them - BUT if you're paranoid like me that changes can happen quickly in this game (AND they can!) then you'll want to always do the following:

1) Keep all of your URs with one player or the other. As soon as new ones post, transfer them.
2) Keep ALL of that player's URs on the BEST card - CSR = #1 or CSP/CIP = #2. Don't keep points sitting on a CF or CFU card.

Just a friendly (paranoid) reminder :)

I’ve scheduled reminders in my calendar for the statement close dates of all our household’s UR-earning cards. As soon as a statement closes, and the UR points post, I start the daisy chain transfer of the points onto my CSR. Make it standard operating procedure!

DH doesn't want to play :-(
Hoping he comes around. He's been using the employee cards I got him, so that's a start haha.

Good point about being able to get the CP later.

Thanks! I will keep the SPG Biz in mind.
It is a bummer about Plastiq, but our mortgage is small so it wouldn't have been as much of a powerhouse for us as it is for others. 80K UR are still a good draw though!

Yes, if the public offer increases then I may decide not to apply in flight. Guess we'll have to see!

FYI - One Reddit User posted evidence that the CIU 50k offer could go away after 9/20: https://www.reddit.com/r/churning/comments/99ce24/daily_discussion_thread_august_22_2018/e4n227t/

This is definitely a rumor we'll keep an eye on. IF CIU 50k goes, I'd imagine CIC 50k could also go away...

I'm tempted to apply for a CIC before that date...but I have gotten 3 Chase cards in 6 months at that point and given my LONG path to get to this stage, I'm not going to risk it.

Thanks for sharing. I was planning to have my wife go for the CIU in mid-September, so no problem there. (I’d have her do it now, but our MSRs are too high.)

Longer term, her CIP anniversary is up in September, so I was thinking of canceling her CIP and have her go for a CIC (for the bonus) come December. I’m also over 5/24 until February 2019, but hoped to go for the CIU in March 2019 (again for the bonus). Hoping the bonuses stay at 50k UR, but I wouldn’t be surprised if they dropped. The standard offer on the CIC was previously 30k UR, so if it drops it may go back down to 30k.

UR-Disney question

Can you get memory maker only or add hoper to tickets you already have with URs?
I am thinking probably not but:teacher: trying to lower my op in case I go for the AP!

My Plastiq payment was declined by Marriott Premiere Plus. I have to call later to find out why. I was wondering with the 100,000 points you get for $5000 spend, can that only be used for Marriott or can you transfer the points so you can book flights or cruises? If it’s only for Marriott I may just give up on trying to get the MS in that card. I’m regretting applying for that card.
Also I applied for Barclays Jet Blue business and it went pending. I was hoping to get points for Jet Blue to fly to Seattle for my cruise in June.

Maybe someone can verify this but when you transfer your cruise to Chase within the first 30 days of booking to use UR points on the cruise you have to pay it in full right after they apply your points right?

Yup. Whenever I feel FOMO on a signup bonus, I remind myself that one signup bonus does not outweigh the risk...

My DH took a bit to come around, once I was able to start booking things on points he came around. Now he asks if we should be opening a new card when a big expense is coming :) So don't give up hope! One thing that helped my DH is I started tracking the redemption value of the points vs AFs paid. He's better if he sees it in front of him.

Was your Plastiq payment more than 20% of your Marriott Premier Plus’s credit limit?

For Chase personal VISA credit cards, payments made through Plastiq may be subject to a lower card limit (typically ~20% of your total card limit). Your transaction should otherwise be treated normally with full rewards.
