Oh that is a shame. Sadly, using a debit card is the riskiest financial thing one can do if they are concerned about fraud. If someone steals your debit card info they can wipe out your entire bank account. That is your money, not the bank's, so there is no incentive to try and get your money back. If they wipe you out the bank won't replace your money. If a thief makes a bunch of charges and wipes you out, the bank can take up to 20 days to investigate and if your mortgage, car payment money etc. is gone there is no recourse. If you report your card stolen within 48 hours you are liable up to $50 in charges but if you take longer than 48 hours you are liable for up to $500. If 60 days goes by you're responsible for all the charges.
If you use a credit card then you are protected. A fraudulent charge is the money that belongs to the bank, not to you. The credit card issuer will reverse the charges and you are not responsible for the fraudulent charge. You are only liable for up to $50 in charges, no matter how much is charged and usually no matter how long it takes to report the card stolen.
