I love credit cards so much!

MMS wouldn't be the first major points and miles blog to advertise Plastiq earning 3x UR on the CIP. Frequent Miler has a few posts about it, including iirc in their Plastiq article. I don't think DoC has explicitly covered this feature, although he's hinted at it and you can find DPs about it in the comments and the Payments Workshop. But I don't think this kind of exposure does any good, especially because the author's use of the CIP through Plastiq to buy a car is of questionable "business" purpose.

I meant more Chase seeing it and shutting him down, not the Plastiq thing.

And was it really worth it assuming he paid the 2.5% fee?
Disclosure: I didn't read the article.

The fees were $1400 something, so if he uses all the points correctly, which I'm sure he will, it was worth it. Whether it ends up being worth bragging and getting paid to write the article though...

Someone brought up the shutdowns in the comments and he pretty much said the people on reddit aren't following the terms and policies and that's the reason. He thinks he's following the terms and policies because he'll use the car he shares with his wife to drive to the post office to mail his "ebay side hustle" stuff. I'm sure he's selling stuff all the time too. He's not doing anything differently that what people here do but he's flaunting it when there's no reason to. As @Lain said above he's why we can't have nice things.

Add in the PP, (whose name I can't remember, sorry!) that had only their CIP shutdown and it makes you wonder. Or will this guy get a pass because he helps drive business to chase via referrals.

TL;DR: He paid 2.5% fees of $1,471 on a payment of $58,857, earned 180,985 UR points, which he figures is worth $5,000 if he transfers to Hyatt 1:1 to book something like the Park Hyatt Maldives or to UA for business class tickets.

He didn't even bother to redact his name, the last four digits of his card number, the Plastiq transaction ID, or the date of the transaction.

anyone have a single card with that high of a credit?

Yes it does, but if you would like, we could help you get more lucrative cards than disney...cards that will get you to disney for free.

I just started following this board and it can be quite overwhelming. I'm also in the middle of a divorce and don't want to be opening too many cards. I thought I would start small and get my $200 credit. I see that many recommend the SWA card but I refuse to drive 25 miles to fly Southwest when the airport only eight miles from my house is a United hub. I'm looking at the United Explorer card - 40K bonus miles and a $100 statement credit through July 16.

I’m not an expert on the United card but I am pretty sure the offer is usually higher than 40k miles. But I did laugh at the “I’m not driving 25 miles” part. My closest airport is 90 miles!! And we have driven 200 miles to BWI before to save some money. I would love to just drive 25 miles.

I would wait because you can usually find a higher offer on that United card. Plus the card just changed this month - new benefits, took some old ones away. I'd assume this means the 50k miles offer will come back sooner rather than later. In 2016, the card offered 70,000 miles. That is uncommon tho.

It's not just the 25 miles. It's the fact that I have to drive straight through Houston to get to Hobby Airport and even under the best of circumstances traffic is horrendous.

LOL our only airport option is an hour away too.

The United Mileage Plus Club Card does have the 50K miles offer. I did like that the United Explorer Card had $0 intro annual fee and a $100 statement credit. The offer is good until July so I will keep an eye on their website. But I am traveling soon so I would like those miles right away! (;

I feel your pain! That 25 miles may not sound like a lot but could be an hour drive on a good day!

Ahh, 25 Houston miles is probably another story. I just saw a FB posting that joked that Houston is an hour from Houston. Lol. I have connected in that airport though. I bet you can save time parking and going through TSA at Hobby over the other much larger Houston airport.

He says Visa Signature cards allow you to go over your limit. I didn't know that. I don't even know which of my cards are Signature cards??
Look at the logo on your Visa card. Does it say Signature below it? That is how you can tell. Some issuers will allow you to go over your credit access line, but that needs to be paid back on your next statement. If you go over your limit by $5,000, then that will be due on your next statement cycle, plus whatever they calculate the minimum payment to be. I only went over once with Chase when we purchased DVC. I called them to tell them before I had made the purchase. I think it will depend on your history with the lender if they will let you go over.

Actually, in Houston, 25 miles IS an hour away because of traffic.

This is true. So true. All my family is in TX, and most are in Houston burbs. These airports are mere miles apart (25 is about right) but every bit of an hour or more of the most life-threatening traffic one could imagine. People DO NOT cross Houston traffic just to fly a different airline. If you live north Houston, SW is just not an option.

My mom lives north of Houston. She came out here to stay with my kids while dh & I went to FL this past April. She wanted to fly SW. She had to drive the night before and stay with my aunt on south side. FLy out next morning. When she arrived back into Houston Hobby, it took her 3-4 hours to get back to her house in north Houston. The traffic there is such a mess.

What's completely crazy is that neither Houston airport is that busy to where they have long TSA lines. Nothing compared to Denver or MCO, imo. It's really just getting around the city that will take years off your life...

I’m sorry to read about your divorce. We’re all friends here, and we definitely don’t want to overwhelm you.

As @WVMomof3 and @GlamMistress already suggested, try to wait until you can get a good signup bonus on the United Explorer (“MPE”) card.

The current public offer on the MPE is only 40k UA miles + $100 statement credit after you spend $2k/3 months. For much of last year, the public offer was 50k UA miles, with a targeted offer of 70k UA miles. There's some buzz that the MPE is out with a new, targeted 60k UA miles offer with its rebranding as the "Explorer" card and changes to its benefits: http://runningwithmiles.boardingarea.com/new-united-explorer-card-65000-mile-bonus/

You need to sign into your MileagePlus account to see if you’ve been targeted. If you’re not seeing anything more than the public offer, don’t bite just yet because there are tricks to get yourself targeted. I can post some ideas tomorrow.

A 40k UA miles offer is not bad when you consider the extra $100 statement credit, but you can do a lot better for that card product (why settle for 40k miles when you know they’re targeting others for 60k miles, or that they’ve offered 70k miles before?) or by signing up for a different card (like the Chase Sapphire Preferred and/or the Chase Sapphire Reserve, which each have 50k Ultimate Rewards (“UR”) points signup bonuses after spending $4k/3 months that can be transferred 1:1 into UA miles).
