I love credit cards so much! v7.0 - 2025 (see first page for add'l details)

Two mini failures and two wins this week so far.
First got a seats.aero alert on a better flight to MUC this May. Unfortunately it was the day after the AC bonus ended. One day earlier and it would have been less to transfer. Still a win on a better nonstop flight.

Second I need some Delta miles (finally). I haven't used any in about 5 years. Saw 90K on the personal platinum. Waffled on applying and went today and it is down to 60K.

BUT the win (I hope), I went for the Delta Gold Biz (also 60K) and instant approval. Then I looked back cause I know I had a Delta card before. Yep the Gold Biz closed in Nov 2020 so ~5 years ago. Surprised they approved. Hopefully they don't rescind it. Has that ever happened? Will they give me the SUB? Is this a 3rd failure and not a win?

Someone tell me if I’m doing the right thing. So initially for Oahu I planned on having a car for the 3 nights we were at Alulani. On points so no parking fees and I know we’ll do a Costco run. We were planning on returning the car and then getting an uber into Waikiki (and then back to the airport).

Renting at the the airport & returning elsewhere adds like $100+ to the rental so we’d have to return at the airport. But 6 vs 3 days of rental is only $110 more. That would mostly get negated by not paying for an uber to and from the airport. Yes we’d have to pay to park in Waikiki. But the cost of parking for the convenience of driving may win out. Especially since I think we’d need a car for 1 Waikiki day. But having it the whole time adds flexibility.
My time and quality of life is worth something. Sounds like this would be worth getting the car to have (IMO) a better experience.

Where are you staying in Waikiki? Have you looked to see if there are local lots that are less expensive than what you're seeing for hotel parking rates?

I ask because we stayed at the Hilton Hawaiian Village and the parking rates were absurd. *But* the marina lot right next door was much more reasonable. So, we opted to park there, which added maybe 5 minutes of walking each time we needed the car but saved a ton of $$ compared to hotel parking. Kind of split the difference on convenience: it was easier than having to Uber a bunch and/or pick up day rentals but slightly less convenient than if we had parked at the hotel proper.

You're fine. No pop-up means you'll get the SUB.

Here is my DP:
I have a legit business EIN as well and wanted to be sure to get the BizCSR a few months ago for the 200kSUB. To increase my chances, I applied in branch and I did get approved while there. I did have business checking accounts at Chase for that business with the EIN I was using for the cc application.

I always get a pit in my stomach whenever I apply for cards...
My biz checking is with Truist. I did just open a biz checking with Chase for the bonus (which posted yesterday) but not under my EIN, so that probably doesn't help lol.
I did end up applying yesterday under the EIN. Just checked and I got flagged for a duplicate application. Oh well. I'll figure out the CP later on I guess. For now I went with getting DH another Venture card with a 75k SUB. We each opened one in 2023 (I used his support link) and we used the SUBs to pay for the Starcruiser, hoping to get 2 SUBs again and pay for DCL.

Hyatt Regency Waikiki. It says self parking is $65 a night. Used to be Waikiki Banyan was recommended but I see their rates are now $50.

sorry I should have sent on points tons of rooms for 90k was looking for my sister im the only one left who doesnt have the card :)
ok... I've never seen a room available on points here and I've randomly searched so many dates!

Ooof, $65 would be a lot to stomach, but it's only 3 nights? I try to turn off my "save every penny" brain for vacation and really think about whether the expense will be worth the added benefit. I did like having a car in Waikiki. We drove out to North Shore, across to some eastern beaches, and south for our Hanauma Bay day. Even just being able to drive out to an interesting hike in the morning or go to a specific restaurant we'd heard of that was a little further out was fun. I think it would be worth it, even if you have to pinch your nose and look the other way on that charge specifically.

We did manage to book all the hotels on points (well, Aulani with our timeshare) so at least there are no other accommodation costs.

And there is something to be said about having 2 of us in the front & the 2 teens in the back of a car vs cramming into the back of an uber with my kids while my husband sits up front.

I do want to drive out and see Byodo-In Temple and I feel like that’s better from Waikiki vs from Aulani.

The Grand Floridian to All-Stars, in that order, sounds tortuous as I get older. Sounds like you had a great mindset about it.

I just bought myself with my Saks credit (plus some topoff) the supposed Le Labo scent from The Reykjavik EDITION. That's one of my favorite things to do to remember a trip. I'm like Ross from Friends, trying to maximize what he spent on that expensive hotel.

How was the trip overall? We were planning the Snaefelsness Peninsula for this August but have canceled our plans because car rentals were so insane during August ($1600 per car) due to the solar eclipse, even though we weren't going to even be there directly during the eclipse.
GF->All-Stars: it was not bad! Just me and my mother (she wanted to see the Xmas decor at WDW and do the holiday parties), not a lot of luggage and we had her car since she lives in SoFL. The GF days were pretty chill with lots of enjoying the resort, character dining (she loves that), and only at the parks at night/for parties. Then the two days at All-Stars Movies we were on full park mode because we're not going back to WDW until late 2027 or 2028 so we were like "let's do all our favorites one last time." Plus, we took advantage of the free water park upon check-in. That meant that we were hardly in the room, we really didn't need something nice, just somewhere to sleep for those two nights... and All Stars is totally fine for that purpose. Good use of the credit imo, though it took a lot of checking the Citi travel portal to get a good rate.

Too bad you had to cancel your trip to see Snaefelsness, but it does seem like Iceland will be crazy around the eclipse. If you decide to do it in the future, I highly recommend Vidgelmir Lava cave (not in the peninsula but western Iceland and easily part of the itinerary) over the various others. There are a lot of lava caves in the area but this particular one is the largest in the country and I believe in Europe. This was one of the highlights of the trip for us; the smaller caves are more crowded because they are more "on the way" but they're basically just any cave/lava tube, like the ones one can find in Hawaii or elsewhere.

The trip was good, only 5 day so kind of fast but a nice way to spend Christmas just the two of us after a year of a lot of family drama, lol. The Edition is a nice hotel, some critiques: it's a bit overpriced (but so is everything in Iceland), the rooms a bit dark (it's fine until you want more light for packing), and the staff seems to be getting used to all the various CC credits and how to apply them in conjunction to the credits from the destination fee, so it took a couple of trips to the front desk to straighten things out (I remember you had some issues as well, so I think the kinks are not worked out). But all the food we had was excellent, the restaurant staff is great, and even the room service food impressed us. Did not try the rooftop bar so no idea how that is. For the Chase part of the stay I paid $250 plus points for those two nights and at the time it was point boosted (2x pp), hopefully Chase doesn't take away the boost for this property. So we paid $250 plus 59K URs for those two nights, which I guess it comparable to a mid-to-high tier Hyatt--I prefer this to Amex FHR since the $300 doesn't cover the one night.

When we weren't in the Snaefelsness tour, we had a lot of fun going around Reykjavik, shopping for wool items, and doing some museums (The Settlement Exhibit was my favorite, and it's not a full-day commitment like a lot of museums). We'll likely go back to Iceland at some point down the line but in summer since we've now seen it twice in winter, and we'd like to explore the northern parts and be able to drive on our own. Probably not going to happen for a few years.

Having been to Aulani twice, both times with a car, I would keep the car.

The only thing is you have to mindful of not keeping anything in the car when not parked at Aulani. Even at Costco and Waikiki.

Interesting, but I'm not sure about the 3% and needing to use Bilt cash to offset the transaction fees on mortgage and HOA. Would have to calculate whether that is appealing over paying cash.
From what I read when I saw the leak posted in the middle of the night, it sounds like it's not good for people who actually need to pay rent because of the transaction fees. Sad since this was the whole "raison d'etre" of the Bilt card. Having to spend 3x monthly rent to wipe out the fees is ridiculous for most of the renters I know. I wonder if a lot of people are going to dump the card. Maybe there's been some update since I read about it, or maybe they are just going for an entirely different demographic.

I have a WWYD: heading to Japan at the end of the month. Poor planning on my part leaves me mid-trip deciding between Kanazawa (never been before, 3h30m from Nikko where I'll be staying for 4 nights) and Kyoto (been a there twice, always enjoy it, 4+ hours from Nikko). Leaning towards Kanazawa since I've never been and it provides me a way to get to the Jigokundani Monkey Park. Plus the Hyatt Centric there is only $100 and change / night and looks very nice.

But that's not my main WWYD. On my way home from Japan I have a 4 night stopover in Singapore (sometimes this happens when booking flights with points -- can't get the dates we want). I've been to Singapore twice and been to all the sites that interest me and eaten all the amazing foods. Not that I wouldn't stay again, but there are other parts of the world that I'd like to see. Which leads me to this:
  • do I fly from Singapore to Ho Chi Minh City (never been to Vietnam) for 3 nights, then back to Singapore for 1 night before heading home via Taipei (3 hour layover)
  • do I just stay in Singapore and try to occupy my time (I am not one that enjoys being idle -- I like to be doing things when I'm traveling).
  • cost-wise it's a wash; flight and hotel in HCMC work out to the room rate that I have booked at the Fullerton Bay Hotel in Singapore (I *could* stay at the Conrad for much less, but I've always wanted to stay at the FBH and AmEx FHR had a 4for3 promo, making it more affordable
  • part of the dilemma stems from the fact that I am planning on taking a checked bag this trip (first time in several years), and I'd have to grab my bag at Changi, them presumably re-check it. I'd be flying on Singapore Air from Haneda and to HCMC, but on different tickets, so not sure if a CSR could somehow link the tickets and check the bag through to HCMH. I really don't want to just have carry-on this trip since I'm planning on doing some outdoor activities in Nikko (hiking and fat tire snow cycling), meaning I'll need a base layer and my gore-tex pants, plus clothing for a tropical climate.
So, WWYD. Singapore or HCMH?

I'm always in favor of seeing new places! We have done crazier things to fit in more during our trips, so I would see a little of Vietnam if I were you. But I'm not at all a relaxer, haven't figured out how to do that lol

I'll look at it the other way. Which option will irritate you more, extra travel with a checked bag and missing out on a hotel you've been wanting to stay at. Or going somewhere again, where you don't think there are new things there for you to do?

Also, kanazawa for sure. I've been watching cycling Japan and dive in Tokyo on nhk and there's so much outside the 3 main cities, and even in the cities to see. I wish I'd watched these before my last trip when I had time to fit stuff in. This is also why I think you could find stuff in Singapore if the hotel is a big enough draw 🙂

Another idea: There is a direct flight from Singapore to Siem Reap on Singapore Airlines, it was less than 2 hours. Ever considered Cambodia? That was my most favorite part of our Asia circuit in November (Singapore/Siem Reap/HCMH).
Otherwise, I vote going to Vietnam over staying in Singapore again. Just note, HCMH airport immigration was a sh*! show. It took literal hours, both coming and going. So factor in some time.

I don’t land in Singapore until 3:25pm and there aren’t any flights to Siem Reap that give me enough leeway to make a connection. I believe the PH HCMC offers a fast-track through immigration with pre-arranged ride to the hotel and my plan was to use that since I’d land around 7:30pm, which seems like a less-than-ideal time.
I looked at so many options from Singapore, but only a very few had flights that would work with my arrival time at Changi.

Any type of fast track through immigration is the way to go in Vietnam. I would never go back without that, lol.

Well, I have to cancel my 2025 Edit reservation - just found out that Prom is the same weekend DH and I scheduled our anniversary trip.
ETA: We lost the 2025 Edit credit, but at least we saved a bunch of points since we were able to take advantage of the additional $250. We booked 2 b2b reservations the InterContinental Presidente Cozumel Resort Spa.
