Yes it was the Hilton Honors No fee card. We were exasperated by the time that happened as it was our 4th attempt. I knew we were approved but could not get past that page for some odd reason. We added younger DD who only has one card in her name - a student Discover card so I guess it's okay if it shows up in her 5/24, but it's certainly not ideal. She is authorized user on some other Chase cards that are older than 24 months plus employee on several biz cards. Maybe after some time passes, we should close this authorized user card so it goes away before the 24 months is up?

For new cards, it counts for 5/24 even if you cancel it. But I don't know how AU cards work. I've read that you can get recon to disregard AU cards by saying you're not financially responsible for them, but I've never tried it myself. Since your DD is just starting out, it might be better to go slower anyways.

Off topic but - has anyone used Rover for their dogs, and had a good experience? We lost our regular dog sitter due to her moving. I found out about another sitter, which was a friend of a friend, so I knew of her and was comfortable for her to stay at our house, gave her dates for upcoming vacations and all, but now she just bailed and said there's a conflict. So I'm back at square one. We do have a boarding facility we're comfortable with and used in the past, although I don't like to send the dogs there for more than 3-5 days because one has a lot of anxiety. I'm looking into Rover again, after having a really bad experience with them about 6 years ago. I just don't know if I trust someone doing dog/house sitting (at MY home). Would love to hear if anyone has had experiences of their own, good or bad!

To keep on topic, I guess a silver lining would be being able to pay with cc to meet MSR.

I think we'll either do Chase or Discover. I hadn't heard of the Chase Rise -- thanks for that.

Also have you done your Bora Bora trip yet this year?
Wow, you remember this! Are you planning a trip to Bora Bora?

I put that trip on the back burner due to another trip that I ended up planning when I learned our college kid could go on a trip with us this summer (squeezed into a window of time after summer research and before school starts back). Instead we're heading to Scotland in less than a week. We're excited!

I use Rover for my dog, but since I don't like strangers coming into my house I always have my dog stay at theirs. I've had numerous problems over time with using Rover sitters including last minute cancellations, but I don't have any other options so that's what I'm stuck with if I want to travel. I also have a dog that is picky about what other dogs he will get along with (so he's been blacklisted at our local boarding facility). Over time (um, like the past 1 1/2 years) I have developed a list of Rover sitters so that I have backup sitters in case my preferred one isn't available. I have noticed all their rates have gone up over time, but I guess that's to be expected.

I try to opt for sitters who don't live alone (so that they have a built-in backup if something happens to them), that don't take more than one client at a time, and have a flexible cancellation policy. And I always do a meet 'n greet ahead of time, especially if the sitter has pets of their own. And try to book a short stay like 1 or 2 nights before I use them for a longer stay later down the line.

Don't forget there are cash back portals for first time Rover users (I'm guessing it's tied to an email address) and there are also support links on our private reddit thread for $20 off your first booking (I don't know if those stack?).

Can you hold two Amex BBP at the same time? P2 received an offer in the mail for 50k MR after $5k spend in 3 months. She has one which is our catch all card when we don't have an MSR or quarterly bonus to meet.

I wish that I had that great of a memory!! But no I didn't remember.

Today I searched "Bora Bora" in the search field and your response to one of my posts last year had come up and we'd gone back and forth about a few things - or something like that. (That struck a cord because I mentioned that I didn't know if I wanted to travel that far due to having two senior animals. And that struck a cord because in June I had to put one senior animal down and the other passed away very unexpectedly on the first day of this month, which was the day that I landed from my European trip. She passed away just hours before we got home.)

I thought that I'd check in with you and see how the French Polynesia went, and maybe read a trip report for info as now that my sweet babies are gone, and I feel that maybe I can venture that far.

I'm excited to read about your Scotland trip. I hope that you have a blast!

Thanks so much for this! Very helpful info, great tips, and had no idea there were support links for Rover either! *mindblown* If I wind up going this route, will definitely use as many as I can :)

Morning all. I would like my daughter, who just turned 18 and is enrolled in college in the fall, to apply for a student credit card (or -- rather -- me to do it for her I'd imagine).

Which is the best card for a college freshman AND does she need to have a job to apply?

Also hehe - how do I make her get a job? :rotfl2: Kinda kidding, kinda not. She says no jobs "speak to her". I told her my "job" doesn't speak to me either, but I've got one!

Edited to add that I've had her as an AU on my Discover card for about 3 years now. So she should have some sort of credit worthiness, right?
I started my DD with a Discover when she started college. A year later she was able to get CF, then Sw.

As far as a job, my kids knew they were responsible for their fun money. Eating outside of their meal plan and other fun(ie. parties) were on their dime, not ours. Hence, they needed some kind of job!

We've used Rover to find cat sitters after our long-time sitter decided our house was too far for her to travel to (she's retired and probably at least 75, so I think she's also cutting back on pet sitting in general). Not quite the same as dog sitting as they only drop in rather than stay in the house, but I like that Rover allows users to post feedback and also tells you how many repeat customers a sitter has. I also like that a new sitter will come to the house for an initial meeting. For the two sitters I've used, I scheduled a one-day trial just to see how it would go and then scheduled them for longer trips. So far it's been fine.

The two cars that are going are the BMW X5 and a Buick Enclave (which I have loved, loved, loved). Thinking of replacing these with an SUV (small or large) and a fuel-efficient sedan.

We have always had a mini-van or an SUV that seats 7. We are handy people, so shlep lumber and what not. And when we travel as a family 2x a year, it would be nice to have the 8 seats of a Pilot (just to the airport), because we typically travel as a party of 8. This time I'm paying an extra nearly $200 for airport parking for an extra car. But our household is only 4, plus two dogs. Youngest is 11.

So I really don't need an 8 seater. It's maybe a want?? A want I'm not sure I want. :rotfl2: I did a calculator and the fuel cost savings is probably around $1000 year.

Has anyone downsized a car and regretted it?

We have a Honda/Toyota theft problem in the city, but luckily it hasn't reached our suburban areas.
I went from an Odyssey to a 2023 CRV Touring (Hybrid). I love the CRV and don't miss the Odyssey at all. My kids are grown and I've driven the CRV down to Florida twice with the dogs and it's been perfect. And I'm averaging about 36 mpg which is good considering it is AWD. I had a Pilot before the Odyssey. I actually thought about another Pilot because the price difference between a Pilot and a Touring CRV was pretty small but I'm so happy with my decison.

My daughter got a Chase Freedom Student when she turned 18. She was a month into her first year in college and had no job at that time. She's been super responsible and worked without a break since the summer after her first year. She came home that summer and worked at Anthropologie and was able to transfer to a store in Atlanta while she was in school. This summer she has an internship and she will be working for them full time when she graduates in December so she's taking fall semester off. And she didn't love her first two jobs (life guarding and Chick Fil A). Something will speak to her eventually! And my job speaks to me but I can't repeat the things it says.

I've had decent experiences using Rover (picking people with a lot of reviews). Some of the horror stories do scare me, though.

DP
called to cancel my amex plat. Because I'm such a great amex customer (28 yr Hilton) blah blah, my offer is 35000 pts fr 4k spend

of course I have my 8k Ink spend and 3 or 4k amex bbp spend right now too!

HOI and car ins coming due, they'll go on ink, and everything else including prepaying utilities will go on both amexes! fun fun

:rotfl2:That's what mine does as well! I told my 15 year old when we were talking about jobs, you don't have to love it. There's a reason it's called work and why they pay you to be there. It's a means to an end and if you find it enjoyable it's a bonus. I work in insurance, it's certainly not exciting but there are worse things to be doing.

I hold a CSR when I need it so at times I'll PC it to a Freedom and then PC again to a CSR when I need the benefits. As of now when I look at my CSR account it says activated for the Priority Pass benefit. My Priority Pass account was originally created with a Venture X which has been canceled. I updated the payment card on my Priority Pass account to my current CSR thinking it would update my account to active but it still shows as expired with a start date of when I applied with the Venture X. How do I update my Priority Pass account when I get a new card that might provide better benefits? Do I need to create a new account each time?

The meet and greet is essential. I once took
my pups Apollo and Luna to meet a Rover sitter who had good reviews, not a lot but also not too few. It was terrible, we waited outside for a good 5 min before he came to the door. We then went into the man's place and there were several waist-high piles of laundry all over the living room. I already knew "no way," but didn't want to be rude so I let him finish give us a tour of his place. Opened a bedroom door: naked baby crawling around a mattress that was on the floor, plus more piles of laundry. He immediately closed it and laughed. Opened the master bedroom door, a woman who was in bed started screaming at him and throwing things. He closed it and laughed. At this point, I didn't want to finish the tour, I just wanted to get out. I'm gripping my babies' leashes tight and looking to backtrack to the front door but he led me through the kitchen to get to the from door. The kitchen was shocking, I can't begin to describe it. Two naked kids ran past us before we made it back to the door. Once outside, the sitter wanted to talk about feeding instructions and such but I said "sorry, I have somewhere to be" and I just took the pups into my car and left. When we got home I decided to bathe them (probably unnecessary, I'm just a clean freak so it was probably just mentally soothing for me,). I called DH and told him I'm not doing any meet-and-greets alone ever again, lol

Luckily, I had had many wonderful experiences with sitters on Rover so I wrote it off as a one-off. Even with some people who didn't have many reviews yet, were just starting out, I've had good experiences. It just so happened that my regulars weren't available that time and I have no idea how this man had any good reviews. Really, the folks on Rover are as varied as people are in general, so you just have to find good ones with whom you feel comfortable.

One of the people I found on Rover is wonderful, she tells us that when we bring the pups to her and her husband she feels like "the grandkids have come to visit." She even knitted blankets for my pups for Christmas.

Very good advice, this is all pretty much what we do exactly. Sigh, I wish we had family nearby to pet sit! For almost every trip, pet sitting is usually the biggest expense for us.

Did you find an answer? I just got this mailer as well. I would think that like the Biz Plat and Gold, one can have more than one Blue Buz Plus...
