There's a new Amex offer for Walmart spend $40 get $10 back (use up to two times). I found it only on the vanilla Plat. Neither my nor P1's Schwab Plats had the Walmart offer. This is not the first time I've seen better offers on the vanilla Plat compared to the Schwab Plat FWIW.

ETA: It also showed up on the Plat AU cards (the free gold colored one).

I need help!! My Godfather passed away Sunday and his service will be next week so I am trying to find last minute plane tickets. I need a flight from MEM to Newark and I am really bummed that SWA doesn't fly to Newark anymore. The funeral is in New Jersey. I could fly to LGA, but then I don't know how to get to New Jersey from there. My parents are making the 17 hour drive from Mississippi, and could pick me up at Newark, but my dad said driving to LGA would be too much out of the way for them and could take hours depending on traffic. Does anyone have any ideas? I would potentially be flying alone and DH is worried about me getting robbed or something. The flight on United, which I've never flown, is $900+ so it's outrageous to me, but it is a nonstop flight. Is United a good airline? I only have RR miles so I would be paying cash for whatever other airline I fly.

There are DPs of $200 and $225 no spend, but they're from over half a year ago.
I would totally go for that! Like I said 1/2 off the AF would probably get me to accept. I ended up saying I'd think about it. I'll chat again in a day or so and see if the offer gets better. I wasn't able to use the FNC this year so either getting a good offer or cancelling.

Do you have URs to transfer to UA? I'm seeing MEM-EWR nonstop for 15K miles (varies depending on day/time) + $5.60 one way next week.

He lives in Linden. I was just trying to fly into EWR so my parents could pick me up at the airport.

I do have some UR's left. I just used up most of them though a couple week ago. Thanks for the thought. I will check that out. Do UR's transfer to UA like SWA?

Thanks I used my personal account and another email address and everything went fine. I'm going to sign up DW as well. She has a Platinum and Gold card that will be closed in 2023 unless she gets a good retention offer. If we do close both will the bank account keep the MR alive or will I need to get her a $0 AF card?
That’s a great question. I would err on the side of caution and open a $0AF MR card.

One last last post before we pack up and head home on Friday.

Nuremberg is stunning. I highly recommend heading here for a day trip, or even overnight. I took a train at 9:20am from Munich Hbf (arr. 10:40am) and left at 5:02pm (arr. 6:04pm); I could easily have stayed longer. I went to the Christmas market, but also wanted to see some of the lesser known area that are stunning and much quieter. The market was by far my favorite of the trip, so glad that I saved it for (almost) last. Most of the items were pretty unique and the prices were lower than Salzburg. Weather was not good (drizzle most of the day), but I had checked the forecast before I left the hotel and wore my goretex jacket with a good layer underneath, so it wasn’t an issue for me.

A few pics from Nuremberg:

Thank you for sharing with us. What a lovely trip!

I want to give another shout out to our hotel in Munich, the Platzl. They have had little chocolate Santas at each place setting for breakfast yesterday and today (some were vegan chocolate but others were Lindt, so today I swapped vegan ones for the Lindt ones!). But it’s not just the chocolate Santas, the staff at the front desk are just so friendly and knowledgeable. I really like the atmosphere here.

Anyhow, on to Neuschanstein Castle. I had booked the day trip through an amalgamator who used Gray Line, but we weren’t on a Gray Line bus, so maybe they sub-contracted to someone else. Don’t know, didn’t ask. We were told to be there 20 mins early and got there about 25 mins early. We were in the last 1/3 of the ones to board the bus. The last 2 people to board arrived at 8:12am and weren’t able to sit together (every seat was occupied).

First stop was Linderhof Castle, the castle that Ludwig II used as his private residence. It was quite small (relative to his other castles) and he lived there only 2 weeks a month. He modeled a lot of the gardens and some of the interior after Versailles (obv we couldn’t see the gardens). There was a light snow when we were there and it was very pretty (no pics because the star of this trip was Neuschwanstein).

On to Oberammergau. This stop was beautiful; we arrived around 11:40am for 40mins, but it wasn’t a lunch stop. It was time to walk around and enjoy the town. We passed the houses with frescoes on the way in and as luck would have it I was on the right side of the bus, so had fantastic views of 2 of the 3 houses. Ds had a cappucino in a cafe and I walked around and took some pics. I wasn’t really interested in shopping, but managed to buy my BIL and nice fleece jacket for Christmas for 20Euros and 2 pewter ornaments from the Kathe Wolfhart store (the store in Nuremberg was extremely crowded when I went in yesterday). That was my only shopping for today because the shops in Schwangau were way too touristy for me.

Onwards to the star of the day, Neuschwanstein, and it did not disappoint. We had time for a lovely lunch at the Alpenstuben Hotel restaurant (thank you for the recommendation — sorry can’t recall who mentioned it). The guide on the bus recommended the Mueller Hotel but there was a long line; the Alpenstuben didn’t have a line and seated us right away. The food was delicious. Ds and I then wandered around town, but I was only going in the shops to briefly warm up. I then climbed the steps up to the yellow castle (privately owned) for the views of Neuschwanstein (SO worth it). Then back down for the walk up to the star of the day (about 15 mins at a slow pace, but they tell you 30 mins). Two of the people in our group were stopped at the top and offered cash for their tickets to the castle because some people thought that they could buy tickets at the castle lol (you need to have them in advance, but they were included with our bus trip, thank goodness).

I found everything about the castle fascinating. The story of Ludwig II is intriguing and surrounded in mystery. The fact that a castle could be built up there must’ve been an architectural and engineering feat. Then the inside (no pics allowed inside), breathtaking. He did not build it to entertain or show off, it was just for his enjoyment (though he never got to live there). He was obsessed with Wagner and there are tributes to Wagner in almost every room. The song room, WOW, just WOW. Also the cave room was so real, even the backs of the doors were made to look like a cave when they were closed — the details were so intricate. I wish the tour was longer and was more in depth. Thank goodness for the internet because I read as much as I could about Ludwig II. He was going to build a 4th castle not far from Neuschwanstein, but was removed from power before he got the chance. I would HIGHLY recommend this tour to anyone visiting Munich. I am glad that we took the bus trip for a few reasons: a) I didn’t have to plan any of the logistics b) the scenery along the route was stunning and c) I enjoyed seeing Linderhof and Oberammergau. The pics don’t do any justice to how beautiful it is and the scale of the castle makes it impossible to get decent shots without a 35mm camera with a very good wide angle lens (I didn’t bring my fancy cameras on this trip), but I will share a few….

College student, age 21, is going to Europe for two weeks this summer, should get a credit card with no foreign transaction fees. Has a tiny bit of income from a summer job. Not my kid. Parents only have 1 credit card, so they're not knowledgeable about any of this. Any advice about what the easiest options would be?

Alright, always looking for some new hacks, so if anyone knows of any between Japan and the US give me some feedback! My current gig is this:

- Take out a credit card or two (this trip it was capital one Venture X (love the card) and AMEX Platinum, used miles with transfer bonus for one way trip from STL to Japan to see in-laws $0
- stayed with family so free board in Japan $0
- LCC from Japan to HNL $300 per person
- Took out a Southwest card, used miles to fly from HNL to STL for free $0
- AMEX benefit and Capital One Travel credits covered Air BNB for 2 days, rental car, and most of our hotel costs. $300 left to cover

Basically used a combo of three cards between my wife and I and got a trip to Japan and Hawaii for the 6 of us for $2100. I thought I did pretty good, but I am open to hearing more ways to min-max this thing. What makes it tricky for us is having such a large family and that we usually optimize our cards for yearly trips to Japan.

Venture X, has a $300ish fee but got mileage bonus that could cover your airfare there and back, lounge benefit (saves a ton on food in airport), no foreign transaction fee, and has a $200 travel credit on things booked through their portal. Only downside is travel insurance only covers airfare I believe.

I also love the Sapphire cards, no travel fees and good travel insurance. Lower fee $95 for the preferred, but no lounge benefit.

2022 in retro. It is a little sad.
Mar - Tucson/Scottsdale OOP $400 mostly AFs.
May - broke my ankle and was laid up for 2 months and another 4 months of PT so no travel
Sept - Canceled Oregon trip :-(

2023 - plans
March - New Mexico
June - Banff/Jasper NPs
August - Nova Scotia/New Brunswick/PEI
October - TBD

Planning to get Global Entry for the "international" travel plans! My pre-check was expiring in April so replacing it. DH will get GE early as his pre-check is still good for 2 years.

College student with basically no income shouldn't be looking at cards with an af, nevermind one with a $300 at.

It's going to depend on her credit score and income, esp if she only has a summer job. Does she get money from her parents or anyone each month?

Where does she bank? That may be the best place to start since she'd have the relationship.

Most of the time for a 1st card discover would be suggested since they have student cards along with regular and both have options with no ftf. But discover isn't taken all over europe so it would probaly not be the best idea. Unless she's open to getting a card from them now to help with her credit score and then in April or May she may have better luck getting a card from a bank that does visa or MC.
