You can make him an authorized user but it will count against him for chase 5/24 (chase only allows you to get 5 credit cards with any credit card company in 24 months). The best would be for you to get the card and then after you reach the $4k spend to refer him to get 15k referral points and then he would get 60k points. And then you can combine the points on one of your accounts. So essentially its a nice way to get 135,000 points, not counting any rewards from spend. If do make him an authorized user he can still apply for a CSP with your referral.

AU counting against 5/24 could be easily fixed though. just takes some time and prep.

Oh, be sure to give us a holler if you see Navy Fed Cash card at a discount. I've just been applying points to my account. Never even knew they had a Cash Card.
I will. Usually they send an email saying $5 off $50 which is of course, 10%. It's mostly in late November in time for Xmas.

What are your future plans and objectives?

Extra cash? Home Depot gift cards for a new appliance? (that was me)
Disney trip?
Free hotel rooms?
Free flights? First or Business Class free flights eventually to Europe/Australia/Asia/Africa? People here stash their points for small redemptions and really big redemptions and if starting up now, they would plan as far as 2-3 years out for a 'lifetime' type trip.

Right now, you could build up your UR's - the CSP would be a good start.

Or you could take advantage of other Chase options while you are 0/24.

Other options are hotel cards, airline cards as well as cashback cards and Amex's Membership Rewards program - right now the Gold card has a great bonus.

So, where do you want to go with this hobby?

So honestly, I'm not sure what I'd like to do with the points. We visit Disney 1-2 times per year and I'm simultaneously learning as much as I can about DVC resale since I'd like to purchase in the fall or early next year. I think if I could use these to "pay" for Disney trips or related purchases I'd like to go that route.

At the moment, I'd just say I'm a collector of points :) I love the idea of having 143,000 points on a card but it'd take a whole lot for me to actually pull the trigger and spend them on something. I mean what if I pick the wrong thing to use them on?! :P:D

I use Amazon a lot as well, so Amazon gift cards would be useful. My DH recently received the HH 100K and Marriott Bonvoy offers in the mail. He has nearly 1 million points in his rewards since he travels a lot and rarely cashed in his points. (And btw I have no reference for whether this is a lot of points to use somewhere or not). I do like to travel so I could see my DD and I using these in the future for some girl's trips.

Thanks for posing the questions! It's certainly given me something to think about and see how I can focus in on using the points rather than collecting them.

With all the attention recently on Chase MDDs, I did put a little section out there on the DISchurners advanced thread. I also put a link in there to Lain's comment from the previous thread too. These resources should help most people!

If your credit report is fairly clean over the past 6+ months and you are eligible for a Sapphire card... you should probably consider doing a MDD. @Lain made some good points the other day about how waiting around for Chase might not be the best idea right now. Well...before you break out of 5/24, make sure you at least got your Sapphire card bases covered!

Question for those who book Hilton with points... I'm trying to book Grand Wailea for next August with points and for 5 nights it's showing 380,000 points- 4 nights plus the 5th night free. Hoping to use DH FNC for one or two more nights. So it's showing availability and takes me through the booking process, my points cover the whole stay, then it shows that $2402.82 will be charged to my card for a deposit. Do they really put that charge through even though I'm booking with points or is that kind of an auto generated total assuming I was paying cash? I just don't remember seeing that before when I've played around with it. Below is what I'm seeing:Hilton.JPG

I have the Grand Wailea booked for Dec and I didn’t see anything like that when I booked. Also, remember if you use 2 FNC, you will use points for 3 nights. The 5th night is no longer free.

Ok thanks I’ll have to call about the deposit because it doesn’t make sense to me. As far as the FNC I was planning to book a total of 6 or 7 nights. I thought I could make a reservation for 5 nights to get the 5th free and a separate reservation tacked on to the end for one or two more nights? Am I not able to do that?

The nice thing about URs is that you can redeem them as cash if you ever need/want to. Maybe that's not the best way to "maximize" their value, but how you use your points is up to you. A million Bonvoy points could get you several stays at the Swan & Dolphin. Again, there may be "better" uses of Bonvoy points, but a free stay at Disney is fantastic and these resorts are great. Set a few goals, and then research which points will allow you to reach them. Starting with Chase is usually the best way to get started.

I have a points booking at Grand Wailea and mine also said something about a deposit but I was never charged. I also have a free night booking and when I called to book that I recall her saying there was a deposit as well but again it was never charged. Not sure why they say this if it doesn't get charged which of course is good it isn't charged as they would just have to refund it.

I am fairly certain that I will be doing the MDD on or around December 15th (my points from the CSR posted on December 14, 2016). I will be 2/24 when I apply. I'm really looking forward to more URs :yay::yay:. I could get a new Hyatt card now, but thinking I might keep the one I have for free night (and it wouldn't be easy for me to reach the MSR -- I have to be very strategic about how I will reach the high spend that MSR cards require as my monthly spending has dropped rather significantly).

AF hit on my 8 year old SW Plus. I eventually want to churn it so I decided to finally call and cancel the card. Super quick call to Chase gave me a $70 credit to offset AF. Yes, I get a $1 bonus. Haha. I’ll keep it another year, and should be under 5/24 in time to possibly reapply next Fall.

A little update on my confirmation/cancellation of reservations for this past weekend. I called the hotel and spoke to another individual who said he was working on getting this resolved and who stressed ' you did nothing wrong'. And 'you will get your money back'.

There is no doubt in my mind that my account will get credited eventually, as I have the correct documentation in email form. But, looking from outside, since my actions were all electronic, I can't understand how this could be anything other than human error at the hotel.
A cancelation should follow and be matched to a confirmed reservation. The hotel is saying to me, 'Corporate messed up.' That, 'they incorrectly canceled the same reservation twice.' And, 'we've got to figure it out'. But, 'you will get your money back'.

There were no other charges except a double charge for the same canceled room, and the statement doesn't close until next month, with payment due after that, so before an actual payment is due, there is almost a month.

So, I'll give them until next week for me to see a credit, and then if no credit, I'll start a dispute. I wouldn't be talking dispute except the case should be fairly simple, and they seem to have it complicated on the hotel end. It's my belief that 'Somebody' didn't do their job when the cancelation came in and then 'Somebody' processed a charge a day ahead, plus duplicated the same charge, right at the hotel.

I was reading about @Minnie368 's deposit and because of this snafu, that 'deposit' would make me very nervous. Especially with it being more than 2K. I know this is random as I've made hundreds of reservations and cancelations without issue, but it's still unnerving when what looks like a straight forward electronic transaction gets messed up. I'm convinced in my mind it's human error on the hotel end.

I have a 5yo SW card and am at 1/24 with my most recent card in June (CSP). If I close the SW card and open a new SW with the current 60k bonus they are offering, I would get a CP. I’m just not sure how much travel we will be doing next year. Any opinions?

Southwest points never expire so you can always just save them for later.

The current bonus is 65,000 (make sure you use a dischurners link if you don't have another SW card to support from.) is a good offer. The timing of a CP pass is so tricky right now with the lack of travel. Read up on how you can get a CP pass with a double dip of SW cards to see if you might want to wait till end of the year to apply and try for 2 cards. Just know that with things tightening up it may be harder to do and the sure thing right now might be your best bet. Decisions decisions. I am not good at making them! Good luck.

id wait for Chase to be a less lenient on biz cards before going for the CP. your gonna end of spending a lot of money to reach CP if ur only doing a single card vs a biz/personal card.

edit: what @WVMomof3 said.

I’m getting close to (hopefully) booking our Hawaii trip and am hoping for some advice from the experts! (@Lain , @CaliforniaGirl09, or anyone else with Hawaii knowledge!

I can book the AA departure flight in the next week or so, so I hoping to get some feedback on my rough plans/itinerary/point redemptions to make sure I’m not missing anything. DH and I have been to Oahu twice (I’ve been one other time when I was young also), my kiddos have never been.

There will be 4 of us going the end of July 2021 (DH, me, DS10, DD8). We’ll be flying from Wichita, KS (ICT) using AA miles (currently have 219k miles).

My plan is to fly from ICT to OGG on a Thurs in mid/late July (20k AA points one way/each person). So far there’s been good availability on points for these days in Aug that aren’t available yet). Stay at the Grand Wailea for 3 nights Thurs – Sat, ck out Sun (95k points x 2 nights + 1 FNC from Hilton Aspire, which I’m planning on referring my DH to soon). We’ll use part of $250 Aspire credit to pay for parking.

Fly from OGG to HNL on Sunday (still working that part out, options are 1. SW RR if flights are available, 2. paying cash (I saw flights on Hawaiian Air for $65/pp), or 3. applying for the Barclay Hawaiian Airlines biz card).

Stay 6 nights (Sun-Fri) at the Hilton Hawaiian Village (60k points x 5 nights + 1 night free (5th night free on points)). We’ll use the remaining Hilton Aspire resort credit for parking.

Check out Fri evening for evening flight back from HNL to ICT, arriving home Sat afternoon. I’m thinking if we have a late flight it would be worth the 60k HH points to reserve the room so that we can use it before the flight, even though we won’t actually stay the night there).

So, one of my questions is for the flight, would you rather book 1 stop, flying ICT to DFW (1 hr 15 min), DFW to OGG (8.5 hour) or ICT to DFW, DFW to LAX (3 hour flight), LAX to OGG (5.5 hour flight)? If it were just DH and me, I’d definitely say the DFW to OGG, but with the kids I’m wondering if it would be better to break up the long flight? We’ll be flight in the main cabin (like peasants 😊). One thing that does scare me about this is the possibility of losing luggage with so many plane changes.

Another questions I have is 3 days good/worth it in Maui? Is Maui/ Grand Wailea good for kids? I mostly want to go just to see a different island than just Oahu, and the GW gets such good reviews here I’d really like to try it.

Thank you for anyone whose taken the time to read my super-long post. I’m sure I’ll have lots more questions later, but for now I just wanted to make sure that I get the main flights right and that I have a good overall plan. Any advice feedback is appreciated! :goodvibes :goodvibes :goodvibes
