It does make me nervous thinking of what stores might not reopen after everything that's going on View attachment 493311

This reminds me that I need to get back to figuring out something to buy with my Kohls gift cards.

One thing I've been thinking of is a Kitchenaid stand mixer as a Christmas gift for one of my kids. Does anyone here have a Kitchenaid from Kohls? Can you comment on its quality? I'm a bit suspicious of name-brand items at Kohls since their Nike stuff appears to be not the same as sold in other stores. (Tagging @amalone1013 because I think she might have been thinking about one of these mixers at some point.)

Not sure if this is still relevant. I got my KA from Kohls. But it was 20 years ago. Mine is still doing well.

To be clear, I’m not advocating for people to pay AFs. Just don’t cancel the card! PC it to a CIC or a CIU and avoid the AF. IF you cancel you might never get a CIC in the future. I’d rather have 3 CICs now than cancel 2 of my Chase biz cards and only have 1. IF I want a CIP again the future for some purpose (it to transfer URs to partners) I need a card to PC from.

I’ll edit the fireside chat to include this clarification.

Queen of AF's responds to Benevolent Dictator:

I'm going to add a counter point. I do advocate paying AFs. However, that is only IF the AF brings you greater value. This value may be quantifiable or totally subjective depending on the card. The value may vary from person to person. I know some folks enter this hobby with the idea that all AFs are bad and should be avoided. One size does not fit all. I hold a good number of AF cards that I keep year after year. As long as I value what the AF can do for me and it outweighs the fee, I will keep the card. When they stop giving me value I will cancel (if there's no PC option) or PC the card.

Hilton Aspire $450 - FN weekend cert, Diamond status, $250 resort credit, $250 airline incidentals credit. This is my favorite sock drawer card. I view this card as AMex saying, give me $450 and I will give you between $750 and $1850 back. The weekend FN cert is unrestricted and can be used for a night in an overwater bungalow in the Maldives that would cost over $1350. The $250 resort credit can be used on Hilton's list of resort hotels. I find a lot of value in this card.

Chase Sapphire Reserve $550 - Second favorite sock drawer card. I will PC this one this year since PlanePrincess will be keeping his. But for newbies on the thread, I'd like to explain the value. The $300 travel credit includes a broad range of categories and is easy to hit. The increased value of your UR points with a CSR vs a CIP/CSP is makes up for the fee if you are redeeming at least $1,000 in the UR travel portal annually.

Radisson Rewards card $75 - Third favorite sock drawer card. This card gives me 40k Radisson Reward points each card anniversary. Those points have been responsible for many nights in Europe that would have cost much more than the AF every year. So, we let the points pile up and then use them for stays across the pond.

Chase Ink Plus $95 - gets 5x at office supply stores (which sell gift cards) up to $50k in spend per year. This is the work horse of my UR quadfecta.

IHG $49 - cat 1-4 FN cert. This is easy enough to use on one of my many weekend jaunts over to WDW and save me using DVC points. I have yet to see an IHG property near there for less that $49 a night.

Amex Gold $250 - Has a $100 airline incidentals credit, and $10 per month dining credit that we use to pick up a $10 Cheesecake Factory GC each month. To me this is a $30 a year card since I can use those benefits. It gets 4x in groceries up to $25K and 4x unlimited dining. Now $10 per month in a GC at Cheesecake Factory may not sound great but did come in pretty handy. PlanePrincess and I both have this card and used about $320 in Cheesecake Factory $10 GCs to purchase a ton of takeout dinners and freeze them so we could "dine out" occasionally during stay at home.

Chase Ritz $450 - This was a PC from the Chase Boundless. It has a $300 airline credit and comes with a 50K Bonblah/Ritz FN cert. I can always get more value with one of those FN certs than the fee. My plan is for this to replace the Amex BonBlah Brilliant card which I will downgrade.

There are other AF cards I have but not all necessarily keeper cards. They are on the chopping block unless I get a good retention offer. Next few AF keeper cards in my line up will be Chase Hyatt, Chase Boundless, and if I get an upgrade offer to a second Aspire, I'll take it.

I added this in the fireside but I'll say it again here:
You can cancel tomorrow, or next month, or next year!
I've regretted closing cards MANY times in this game. Honestly I regret some cards I closed to this day...like literally right now! I've never regretted leaving one open, because I can simply call back in a minute and change my mind if I want to. Once it's canceled...it's gone man...just like if you throw your keys in lava.

Yeah, unfortunately in general KA has gone downhill since then. I still love mine, but they just aren't as durable as they used to be (I sound like my mom talking about washing machines). I use mine to make bread dough and even though I have the heavy duty one I know I'll burn the motor out before 10 years and might as well just replace it. Thankfully it seems to conveniently happen when they are on sale at Costco.

Thanks for this write up. Very informative! This is the first time I’ve seen anything about a Radisson Rewards card. And frankly, I’m intrigued now seeing as the issuer is not Chase, lol. Can you give any insight on the average points needed for a free night? Do the 40,000 anniversary points get you at least one night free?

ETA: I looked up several domestic locations we frequent, and found properties under 40k points that I could use this at. This may be a card I look more into after I’m 5/24.

Can anyone give me some tips on what you do as far as freezing/unfreezing credit reports before applying for a card? I thought I had read about some who freeze one or two of the bureaus before applying so that the inquiry only hits one? Just wondering if those of you with lots of experience do this- and if so, which reports do you freeze for which cards? Thanks!

This wasn't even on my radar but I don't know why you'd risk it. Even with DoCs list you may not get it right. I froze my credit after someone attempted to open an amazon card with my info. While it's not a huge time suck or inconvenience to unfreeze the reports each time I do a card, I'd never go through all that simply as a way to game the system over a couple of points of my cr. If there's another reason for controlling the hard pulls maybe it's time to take a break for a bit, until you buy the house or refi etc. Or evaluate if you are going too fast etc.

If it's not worth a hp don't apply for it.

Did they change the annual cap? It was $25k combined and only the Ink Plus still got $50K annual cap.
My Blue Cash Everyday & Blue Cash Preferred cards. I cancelled the BCE in June 2017 when I bumped up against the Amex card limit. At the time I still had a BCP open though, I cancelled that in Aug 2017 and I honestly don't know why I did. I should've dowgraded to a BCE. I still have my wife's BCE (currently a BCP actually) but I really wish I still had one of mine so I could play the upgrade/downgrade game with BCP.

In the past I've regretted cancelling some SW cards since I missed out on friends and family support clicks when I was without a SW card.

On the CIC: The cap is 25k - I just didn't have my facts straight. I never can keep those 2 clear since neither matters to me, haha! I went back and edited. Thanks for noticing!!

You're welcome :flower3: It's not one of the more popular cards. It can bring great value to some. The majority of the properties I've used for point night bookings have been between 50k and 70k per night. I only use them in Europe. It's nice to let the $75 AF be part of our annual vacation budget and let these points pile up. Then, when we decide on a Europe trip, we've got our hotel nights covered. Even though we don't use the points every year, we've still received far greater value in the hotel redemptions every few years that far exceed the annual fees combined year after year.

I agree - I wish I could have kept my BCP or BCE cards, but it's hard when when I also want a Delta card, Blue Business Plus, and multiple Hilton cards. Something has to give.

I might be the only other person here with this card besides @calypso726 lol. In the US it's generally useful for places that are near airports if you need a place to stay overnight, or on a road trip. The places in Europe are a little nicer, but just fair warning that it is challenging to find rooms in Europe that accommodate more than two people. Triples are hard to come by (there are 3 of us that I need lodging for), and quads are almost impossible.

I have 2 Amex cards. Blue Cash Every Day and Amex Every Day Card. Way back before I joined the board I had started with the Amex every day card. Then I found out about the blue cash and asked Amex to PC to that one but they ended up opening the new card for me instead. Since then I don’t use either a lot but keep some spend on them for the day I eventually want another Amex. So, my question is what is upgrade down grade with the BCP? Is this something I could do with either my blue cash card that worth looking into?

Just posted on r/churning:

American Express ED->EDP 25k upgrade link.
https://www.americanexpress.com/us/...it-card/38118-AEDPUPQ120?displayBenefits=true

This appears to be targeted so you could also find it in your "Amex Offers" section.

I was actually eligible...wow, lol. Now I have to determine if I want to do this or not... Amex upgrade offers could be a good way to continue to slow my roll... :D

I'm looking at it as this:
1) Meet the entire MSR in grocery while hitting the 30 transaction limit
2) That earns me 6,000 base MRs + 3,000 bonus MRs
3) We get the 25,000 MR bonus as well
4) Pay a pro-rated AF (let's assume it's $95 for now...)

So I get 34,000 MRs for spending $2k. I've previously had the EDP so it doesn't hurt me there. If I cash out for gift cards its $340 (less the AF) for $2k at a return of > 12% and I get 6 months to hit the spend...

What great timing - see the comment I just made, LOL!

So on the BCE and ED cards, Amex will often release upgrade offers to the BCP and EDP. They require you to pay the AF and often only yield a 10-12% return after you factor that in... BUT they don't add to your 5/24 count. I've upgraded BCEs three times now and I can't remember if this would be my 2nd EDP upgrade or maybe my 1st. Nonetheless, you just downgrade again in the future when the AF posts and wait for them to target you.

It gets a little weird though because they charge this pro-rated AF. If you're midway through your card year (it's based on when the card was originally opened) you get a smaller AF then have to decide if you want to pay the full AF for the next year or downgrade. I usually downgrade to avoid the full AF while acknowledging that might tick Amex off some day...

Sounds good, thank you! It would be especially good for the 6% in grocery stores. I will have to keep my eye out for an upgrade- is this something they offer publicly or to targeted card holders?

Targeted. I’m working a BCP upgrade offer for my wife currently. I accepted it about a month ago. Login and login at your Amex offers for an upgrade offer. It might say something like “earn more”

FYI, for those of you with a "legit" sole prop - it is possible to get approved (this doesn't surprise me):

[–]Basanez 31 points 5 hours ago*
P2 finally got approved for CIU after almost 3 weeks of recon. 4/24, ~750-760, first business card with Chase. They required every single paper you can think of from IRS, state and even county. SP with >5 years in business. Real business. No deposits with Chase. Every time P2 would fax something they would ask for something else, then the last call they stated they saw everything was faxed individually and they required all the documents together ... and today finally they “caved” in. Good lord these people ...
Edit: 4/24

I finally have an upgrade offer! Do you have six months to spend the $1000? I could do it in three but would rather have six.
